Group l racing continues at Morphettville this Saturday where it is Goodwood Day. The weather is fine, the track is soft (5) and the rail is out five metres from the 1200m-Winning Post; Out three metres from the 1800m-1200m; True for the remainder.
The Goodwood 🏆: View the Field and Odds for The Goodwood
Race 1. (12:02) Rexel (Bm80) 2015m
5 Does It (Bet Now: $4.60) gets the nod. Team Jolly trained gelding who comes back to 2000m after contesting the Port Adelaide Cup where he was chasing a genuine speed throughout and battled away well enough in defeat when third to Splendiferous. Back to benchmark grade and back in trip, he’s the one they have to beat.
1 Not Usual Glorious (Bet Now: $2.65) has returned in fab order. Both runs this time in have come over the mile here, winning a fortnight back with sustained speed from the front coming to the fore in a dominant display. Proven at 2100m, so a rise to 2000m no issue and has good upside to come.
2 Dexter You Devil (Bet Now: $10.00) is proven at the trip so I think getting back up to it suits. Ran in the Not Usual Glorious race from two weeks back where he got back to near last in the run and was never a factor in an on pace dominated affair. Like him up in distance and if he’s within range, he’ll be dangerous.
Race 2. (12:37) Thomas Farms (Bm72) 1050m
11 Extremely Lucky (Bet Now: $1.50) is a very promising three year old for Will Clarken. Backed with confidence when racing in the Tobin Bronze two weeks ago and he is badly named because he was extremely unlucky behijnd Seradess, who got complete in control and was much too good. With clear air, this three year old can rock and roll.
4 Full Probe (Bet Now: $8.00) deserves another chance for Team Jolly. He resumed on the Parks track three weeks ago where he was a notable drifter late in betting and the market got it right. He sat on speed and seemed to have his chance when tiring late behind Gaze Grise. Fitter, bigger track, giving him another look.
8 Aston Rapova (Bet Now: $18.00) looks much better suited back to this level. Thrown in the deep end two weeks back in the McKay, looking for a Goodwood berth, but was outclassed when down the track behind Free Of Debt. Back to benchmark grade, his best is certainly good enough to be dangerous.
Race 3. (13:12) Carbine Club Of Sth Aust.-Bm64 1200m
12 Three Tears (Bet Now: $3.30) looks to have the right form to take this out. She ran two weeks ago here and worked home very strongly against the pattern, just missing out on the win when a narrow second to I Am Bene, who I am a big fan of, so I think that is good enough to take this out.
4 Brother’s Shadow (Bet Now: $8.50) is a handy three year old for Travis Doudle that is on the seven day back up after resuming last Saturday here where he didn’t get the clearest of paths in the straight and should have finished a touch closer behind Queman. More positive ride and he can threaten.
15 Naleigh (Bet Now: $31.00) is a key threat. First run for Grant Kluske came here two weeks back over 1050m where she was run off her legs. She was never a threat, but her finale was more than sound behind I Am Bene in a good return. Dangerous if she can be a pair or two closer.
Race 4. (13:47) David Coles Am Stakes 1200m
4 See You In Heaven (Bet Now: $1.75) is bred to eat up further…but she is she just a short course horse? Ridden arrogantly in the Breeders a few weeks back and duly saluted with a bit of authority. But, her late splits were nothing to jump up and down about, so a hard 1200m is a query, but she might just have too much brilliance.
5 Aitch Two Oh (Bet Now: $4.80) just has to tick the 1200m box. That is the only knock with her. Very sharp five furlong horse, as seen a fortnight back when taking out the Without Fear, knuckling down to wear down Winning Revolution. I think with a soft trip in transit, 1200m is okay and has a class factor.
8 Celtic Vader (Bet Now: $126.00) is a sneaky first four chance if they jump/run with her. They’ve ridden her with a sit in both runs this time in, but go back to first prep, she scooted along in front and did win. I reckon if those tactics are adopted here, she’ll run a much improved race at odds.
Race 5. (14:22) Centaurea Stakes 2015m
7 La Chevalee (Bet Now: $5.00) is a query at the trip but she has the Maher/Eustace polish and comes here off the back of a dominant win, which came over the mile at Randwick. She found the fast lane, but even allowing for that, she had a bit on them, and the form has been well and truly ticked off. Hard to beat I’d suggest.
2 La Dragontea (Bet Now: $5.00) is a very interesting mare. Former American that made her Australian debut in the Queen Of The South and I thought she was a definite pass mark after covering additional ground. 2000m+ is when she fired in America, so keen to see how she goes here.
3 Starelle (Bet Now: $10.00) has an awful winning strike rate, but 2000m should be ideal. Got back in the run in the Queen Of The South two weeks ago but really liked the way she finished her race off behind Silent Sovereign. Hard fit now and up to a suitable trip, she appeals for sure.
Race 6. (14:57) Sa Fillies Classic 2500m
1 Douceur (Bet Now: $3.50) is the proven 2500m performer here and has class. She ran in the SA Oaks where she was given an absolute peach by Mick Dee but just couldn’t quite finish it off behind Glint Of Hope, where she was far from disgraced. Hard fit and up to 2500m, she’ll take beating I’d suggest.
8 Morrissette (Bet Now: $9.00) is a filly with some promise for Simon Ryan. Was an outsider in the Oaks but despite her SP, I thought she ran a super race in defeat behind Glint Of Hope after getting a mile back in the run. 2500m no issue for her and has to be rated as one of the key chances.
7 The Map (Bet Now: $26.00) gets a great chance for some blacktype. Didn’t get a run in the Oaks so instead went to the Chairmans, took on the boys, and I thought she was far from disgraced in defeat behind Jungle Magtnate, who of course went on to win the Derby, so a big tick to that form and this filly will eat up 2500m.
Race 7. (15:37) R A Lee Stakes 1600m
With due respect to connections, 7 Dalasan (Bet Now: $2.50) has been awfully placed the last 12-18 months. He should be in Brisbane measuring up and running well in a Doomben Cup. Instead, he comes here with fresh legs in search of a low Stakes win, and really, he should be winning. He has panels on this lot re class and form, and his jumpout last week was good enough to say he’ll beat up this lot.
4 Royal Mile (Bet Now: $26.00) is getting towards D-Day. Just missed out on the win two back on Adelaide Cup Day before being given a let up and racing in the City Of Adelaide three weeks ago where he failed to fire a shot in a pretty plain effort behind Morvada. Fitter and up to the mile on the bigger track, it’s just about last chance territory.
5 Struck By (Bet Now: $20.00) is three weeks between runs for Travis Doudle since racing in the City Of Adelaide on the Parks when near the speed throughout, doing work, and fighting on really bravely in defeat behind Morvada. Proven Stakes performer at this track/distance, he’s here with a shout.
Race 8. (16:17) The Goodwood 1200m
I think 4 The Inferno (Bet Now: $9.00) is the each way bet at close to double figures. He was the run of the race in the McKay IMO given he was forced to make his run early and out wide, which was a no go zone. His late splits were excellent, just knocking up late. Hard fit, draws to get a suck and I’d argue the best big race rider in Australia as it stands, Mark Zahra, sticks.
11 Regardsmaree (Bet Now: $21.00) is a beauty for Nick Ryan. Loved the way he attacked the line to win the VOBIS Sprint before backing up a week later at Sandown in the Anniversary Vase where he knuckled down strongly once again to wear down a class animal, Buffalo River. Interesting placement here, but he draws to get a suck run and be strong at the end.
15 Bella Nipotina (Bet Now: $16.00) is a beauty for the Maher/Eustace camp. Strong winner of the Sapphire at Randwick two back before going to the Sangster where she had no chance given the race shape but was still good in defeat behind stablemate Snapdancer. Fast run 1200m here, she’ll get her chance.
Race 9. (16:55) Proud Miss Stakes 1200m
14 I Am Bene (Bet Now: $10.00) is avery smart filly for Andrew Clarken. 2/2 to start her career, winning on debut at Gawler where she smashed the clock late. Spelled and resumed two weeks ago here where Gatt had to ride her ugly to suit the pattern and the ride won the race, just lasting. I think with a more conservative steer, you’ll see a much better filly.
4 Gimmie Par (Bet Now: $12.00) has a touch of class on her side to give this a shake. Ran a few weeks ago in the VOBIS Dash at Caulfield when on speed and chasing Midwest. She tried hard but couldn’t quite get there, eventually finishing third. Back to this sort of level, she can bounce back.
5 Miss Albania (Bet Now: $9.00) was one of the runners of the meeting from two weeks back here which confirmed that there was a clear bias towards those nearer the inside. She was an outsider in the McKay but really, she should have won had she got clear air. That followed a very plain return at Caulfield but I think ridden with cover is her go and back to Mares grade, she’s in with a shout.
