The course proper at Morphettville will play host to a solid nine event meeting on Saturday. The weather is fine, the track is soft (6) and the rail is out twelve metres from the 1200m-Winning Post; Out eight metres for the remainder.
Race 1. (11:56) Holdfast Insurance Hcp 1050m
3 Sunshines (Bet Now: $2.50) looks to pick himself here. Nick Ryan trains this Akeed Mofeed youngster, who resumed down the Flemington straight two weeks ago and closed off hard alongside the eventual winner Standoff, with that horse just getting the better of it late. Has since run fair on Wednesday at Sandown, but still think that form is the right way for this.
5 Daily Spirit (Bet Now: $3.50) looks another of these Macdonald/Gluyas juveniles that have ability. She was unwanted in betting when debuting on the Parks track two weeks ago but loved the way she found the line late when third to nippy pocket rocket All Banter. If this was 1200m, I’d bet up, but still think 1050m will be okay.
6 Instant Celebrity (Bet Now: $5.00) is a Not A Single Doubt filly on debut for Phillip Stokes. The dam Celebrity Girl showed talent in her career so keen to see how this filly goes. Has had three jumpouts to prepare for her debut and has looked okay without jumping up and down, so think the market will be the main guide, but have to respect the stable.
Race 2. (12:31) Aami (bm68) 1600m
Hard to get away from 3 Sign Of Ussuri (Bet Now: $2.00). Came to South Australia with a month between runs and he looked a different horse when spanking them at Murray Bridge over 1400m. Won by just over five lengths but it could have been much further if Vorster was fair dinkum. This horse has always showed promise and off that last start win, he can go right on with it.
5 In Heart’s Wake (Bet Now: $5.50) can be an improver. Ran over 1300m on the Parks track two weeks ago…well I say run, but it was pretty much a barrier trial for her. Had the box seat run but Caitlin Jones couldn’t get clear at any stage on the mare and she went around like it was a barrier trial. Up in trip, drawn out, so she’ll get her chance.
2 Rock Harbour (Bet Now: $6.00) is a key chance. On the seven day back up for David Jolly after racing last Saturday over 1200m at Murray Bridge where he was back last throughout and never really a winning factor but did make up good ground late in an eye catching effort. Jumping straight to the mile within a week is interesting but he’s going too well to ignore.
Race 3. (13:06) Tab Mdn Plate 1200m
13 She’s Krupt (Bet Now: $4.00) for me. Ryan Balfour trained filly that was a working progress in two runs prior to her run on the Parks track two weeks ago when the Winkers were applied, she raced more tractably and was there to win the race. Just found one better near the line in Flirting. Think that form will stand up here and she’s the one to beat.
3 Pearl Dragon (Bet Now: $4.00) should be okay at 1200m. Ran over 1000m on the Parks track in the Flirting maiden and I thought this three year old got every chance near the speed. Stubby rode him a treat, loomed to win but just found a couple better on the line. Does he want 1200m? Potentially, but it’s the right form for this.
14 Zegresto (Bet Now: $13.00) is very much suited up to 1200m for Darren Magro. Solid resumption over 1100m before coming back to 1000m at Murray Bridge and was a real eye catcher late to run third, looking like a filly that wants further. She’ll eat up 1200m off that last start effort and is one to include as a key winning chance.
Race 4. (13:41) Tab (bm58) 1800m
2 Cracksman (Bet Now: $3.70) is a hard one to catch but I think this is really good placement by Danny O’Brien, finding a Saturday metro Benchmark 58. Resumed over the mile at Sale in a 64 and charged home late, just missing out on picking up Blenders Edition. These 64 back to 58 runners are more often than not a bet, and this guy looks one of the better bets on the card, especially up to 1800m.
8 Distant Promise (Bet Now: $18.00) is a Macdonald/Gluyas trained filly that is taking on the older horses in town but has been doing a good job in recent runs. Loved the way she toughed it out to win her maiden two back at Balaklava before going to Gawler where she got a fair way back in the run and was never really a winning threat but did make up ground. Think 1800m suits and overall finds a thin race.
7 Exalted Dee (Bet Now: $15.00) is suited up in trip for Grant Young. Ran over the mile last Saturday at Murray Bridge where she was held up for a few strides but for the most part, had her chance when down the track behind Elusive Nature. Think a rise in trip suits and drops from 68 grade to 58 grade, which is a good recipe.
Race 5. (14:16) Adelaide Galvanising (bm82) 1200m
The seven day back up concerns me to an extent, but off what he produced last Saturday, I’m keen on 8 Extreme Thrill (Bet Now: $3.70). Fitness beat him first up here when a close up third to Star Hills. Then went to Murray Bridge last Saturday and he should have won. Just had no clear air at really any stage when having something to offer and with a clear path, think he wins. Likes wet ground, so the rain forecast is no issue. The issue is the back up. Longest break between runs is two weeks, which was back around this time last year.
5 Nipperkin (Bet Now: $11.00) is a Barry Brook trained mare who should welcome the drop down from Stakes company. She’s raced at that level at her past three outings and while she hasn’t threatened to win, she’s been far from disgraced in the three runs. 1600m back to 1200m is a query but likes wet ground and has class on her side.
2 Zalmona (Bet Now: $9.00) is on the seven day back up for the Peter Blanch stable after racing last Saturday at Murray Bridge and gee it was an ugly watch if you were on. Was back on the fence and stayed there to get luck and get a split…it didn’t eventuate and it was pretty much a barrier trial. Hasn’t been too bad on the back up previously.
Race 6. (14:56) Furphy (bm72) 1050m
I’m in the corner of 3 Octane (Bet Now: $2.30), who resumes for Phillip Stokes. Had three runs for the new stable last prep and won them all, each time looking very impressive with big finales. Did carry 59kg to win first up last prep so the weight isn’t an issue and his two jumpouts to get ready for the resumption have been quite good.
6 Symphonette (Bet Now: $7.00) has been pretty good in three runs back from a spell for Phillip Stokes. Luckless two back behind Star Hills before backing up a week later at Murray Bridge and won nicely, beating who I think is a Stakes class mare in Lakhani Rose. Seems to be holding her form much better this time around and is a key threat.
I’m very wary of 2 Experimentation (Bet Now: $20.00). Didn’t fire a shot first up at Murray Bridge in the race won by Symphonette mentioned above but has since had a couple of Morphettville jumpouts with the Blinkers on and has looked quite sharp. Dare say he’ll hold a decent spot from the inside gate and could easily win without surprising.
Race 7. (15:36) Zilzie Wines (bm82) 1800m
5 Grinzinger Star (Bet Now: $2.70) is a Danny O’Brien trained gelding who’s racing well. Ran over 1800m at Flemington two weeks ago when Olly seemed to give the four year old every chance but couldn’t quite finish it off when third to Creedence. He’s not far off a win but keep in mind it has been a little while since he has greeted the judge first, so getting close to D-Day.
Back to 1800m is interesting with the Team McEvoy runner 4 Box On Collins (Bet Now: $6.50). Ran over 1950m on the Parks track two weeks ago in the field of four and seemed to get every chance when third to Budd Fox in what I thought was a pretty plain effort off a good resumption. His best is good enough. Just want to see him do it.
If 1 Charossa (Bet Now: $9.00) brings anything near his best, he wins. The problem being he’s out of form at the moment, albeit his recent racing has come in Melbourne. Latest run came last Saturday at the Valley when wide no cover for the trip. Gets in really well after the claim, Blinkers back on…he gets his chance to bounce back.
Race 8. (16:16) Caudo Vinyard Hcp (58) 1050m
5 God’s Penny (Bet Now: $4.40) is an interesting one. Showed really good promise early on his career but this prep, he looked very disappointing. But he bounced back to positive form on the Parks track three weeks ago when a fast finishing second to Issara, and a little unlucky too with Neindorf not getting the clearest of paths. If he brings that effort here, he goes close.
13 Sonic Deed (Bet Now: $4.80) is a big improver here at odds. Ryan Balfour trained mare that resumed over 900m at Murray Bridge where she didn’t show any early toe, against the norm for her, and she couldn’t come on in a disappointing resumption behind Exalted Gold. She’s better than that, so have to give her another chance.
17 Wonder (Bet Now: $18.00) If is a Team Jolly trained five year old that had late backing when resuming over 1050m at Balaklava and off a fast speed, he produced good change up speed and was able to wear them down for a strong win. Hasn’t really measured up in town before but off that resumption, now seems the right time to try again.
Race 9. (16:55) Schweppes (bm58) 1200m
Leaning the way of 4 Sunmate (Bet Now: $6.00) for the Stacey Kotz team. Resumed five weeks ago over this track/distance when just off the speed and held up for a few strides before angling clear late and surging hard late to just miss out on picking up Midnight Storm. Staying at 1200m is the knock with him but he’s got a touch of quality.
Think back to a fast run 1200m suits 14 Glory Game (Bet Now: $4.40), who ran over 1300m on the Parks track two weeks ago and tried hard, but couldn’t quite finish it off well and just scraped in for third behind the in form Really Discreet. That form reads very well and I always like horses dropping from 64/68 to a 58 race.
9 Exalted Lauretta (Bet Now: $23.00) is a Grant Young trained mare who is around the mark more often than not. Ran over 1100m at Strathalbyn last time out when punching forward to sit near the speed and gave a kick for a few strides, but tired late and I thought was disappointing. Her best is good enough and likes racing at this track/distance.
