Eight races will be run and won at Sandown Lakeside this Wednesday. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (15:40) Ladbrokes Split Multi Mdn 1200m
Not really a maiden I want to get involved in from a betting perspective but for the sake of a tip, going with 1 Johnny Angel(Bet Now:Β $2.60). Aaron Purcell has him going well. Just can’t crack it for a win. Looked like it would come here last time out but he had to settle for a narrow second to Orlando Grove. Positive ride should see him land in front and prove hard to run down.
5 Ord (Bet Now:Β $2.25) has done a good job in his short career to date, placing in all four career outings but hasn’t been able to greet the judge first. Latest run came a few weeks ago at Caulfield where I was stunned he ended up starting $1.35, a heavily backed $1.35, and he just whacked away. He can win…but couldn’t touch as a betting proposition.
6 Silly Point(Bet Now:Β $5.00) does look third pick but a distant third pick behind the first two. But in saying that, he doesn’t have the convictions of the first two and is a Team Hawkes first starter. Jumpouts suggest he has some ability. Not sure it’s enough to win here on debut but watch the market.
Race 2. (16:15) Clanbrooke Racing Mdn Plate 1300m
Another tricky maiden to sort out with confidence. 6 Simpkin (Bet Now:Β $7.50) has an okay engine under the hood I feel from what I’ve seen at the jumpouts. Still appears to be a bit raw and new to the caper, as seen in the latest jumpout when wanting to lay in under pressure hence the nose band goes on, hopefully to straighten him out.
8 Media Statement (Bet Now:Β $5.00) is an interesting runner. Chris Waller trained filly that resumes. Hasn’t raced since her debut at Mornington back in September when seemingly struggling on the tight track. Has had three jumpouts to get ready, so has a decent enough fitness base for her resumption and stable/rider combo is in form.
Up to 1300m looks a big tick for 7 Twiggy Pop (Bet Now:Β $8.00). Colin Scott trained gelding that has had two runs back from a spell, each coming over 1000m. Latest of those runs was at Echuca when a closing third to Lunar Hero after getting a fair way back in transit. Like him up in trip and hopefully can sit a pair or two closer in the run.
Race 3. (16:50) The Big Screen Company Hcp-c1 1400m
Might be a Class One, but there is good depth to this with a host of chances. Just kept coming back to the map and 4 Setanta (Bet Now:Β $4.50) getting a suck run in transit. Was wide no cover and doing work when resuming over 1400m at Warrnambool but a confident ride from Allen saw him slide forward, take the lead and he was strong late in winning. Can get run of the race from the draw and prove hard to beat.
9 Orchestrate (Bet Now:Β $6.00) has come back in really good order for Mitch Freedman and is a leading contender. Resumed with an electric win from off the speed at Mornington in a maiden before racing over 1300m here last time out and working home nicely from the back. If Jamie Kah can get her to settle closer in the run, she’ll be dangerous.
2 Knife’s Edge (Bet Now:Β $6.00) looks to have his share of talent for the in form Cindy Alderson stable. Resumed over 1400m in a Cranbourne maiden where he had to make a decent sustained run from off the speed and despite being out of petrol tickets late, he fought hard to get the win. Gap to third I like and he’s got improvement to come.
Race 4. (17:25) Ladbrokes Back Yourself (bm64) 2400m
I’m in the corner of 1 Tarn’s Prince (Bet Now:Β $3.00) for the Matt Cumani team. He is a month between runs since racing over 2100m here where he was back in a real on pace dominated affair, so for him to work home well like he did was a big tick in defeat. Hopefully Will Price rolls forward, takes bad luck out of the equation and rides him like the best horse in the race, which he is.
3 Darvin (Bet Now:Β $4.20) has really turned the corner since being gelded. He’s a different horse this time in. Good in defeat fresh at Warrnambool before racing here where he got back before saving ground nearer the inside and driving hard to just miss out on picking up Tolemac. Third up, hard fit now, leading contender.
Think 2 Nordic Symphony (Bet Now:Β $6.00) is going better than what the form guide will tell you. Forget she went around two back behind Laundy in an on pace domination. She then went to Flemington and was good late behind an in form Doroza. Gets in well after the claim and is a knockout chance.
Race 5. (18:00) Thoroughbred Club (bm64) 1600m
Want to give 5 St Joey’s (Bet Now:Β $16.00) a chance. He’s a talented animal for Matty Williams but he hasn’t really gone on with it the last 12 months after showing really good promise in his 3YO season. Not much went his way fresh at Warrnambool but still thought he was entitled to finish off the race a bit better. Has talent when right and from the inside gate, hopefully it is used and he can settle handy.
6 Hit Reset (Bet Now:Β $8.00) has returned well for Brent Stanley. Resumed with a dominant win at 58 level at Benalla before going to 1400m here when on speed and trying hard, but couldn’t quite finish it off and had to settle for a fifth. Think she can find the front and under Olly, potentially takes control and proves hard to get past.
I’m including 3 Vela (Bet Now:Β $31.00) in wider multiples. Grahame Begg trained former French galloper that has had a couple of runs in Australia, the latest coming over 1300m here when back and never really in the hunt behind Goolagong Rose. Fitter and up in trip, can run an improved race at odds.
Race 6. (18:30) Tile Importer (bm64) 1200m
Provided this track is firm, which the forecast says it will be, then I’m keen on 2 Faretti (Bet Now:Β $3.70). Think he has a fair bit on these and he has been maligned given the price tag and early promise. Hasn’t lived up to it, but he has talent and finds a very winnable race to resume in. Two jumpouts to get ready have been very sharp, and despite drawing wide, has the early toe to come across, lead and prove too classy.
11 It’sourtime (Bet Now:Β $3.40) is a Danny O’Brien trained three year old that was a strong winner on debut at Sale. Settled off the speed and was one of the first off the bit but kept finding under pressure and on the line he finished best. Third horse won last Wednesday at Caulfield, so form has been somewhat franked and overall, this isn’t a strong race.
6 Legend Of Zorro (Bet Now:Β $15.00) is one I’d include in wider multiples. Andrew Noblet trains this gelding, who resumed behind Altai Ranger in the Werribee race mentioned above. He got back and was held up at times, but wasn’t really a winning threat given the race shape. Good speed in front should give him every chance.
Race 7. (19:00) Ladbrokes Easy Form (bm64) 1300m
Think there is a decent engine under the hood of 3 Awapuni Princess (Bet Now:Β $6.50). Ran sharp time when winning on debut at Wangaratta before going to Geelong where I thought she was a good thing, but the track was bottomless and when McNeil pushed the button, the wheels were spinning. Better suited on top of the ground can measure up here.
I like the look of 7 Parure (Bet Now:Β $11.00). Hayes/Dabernig filly that reared in the gates and took no part at Geelong two back. Stable then sent her to Wangaratta for the kill and she got it in impressive fashion, running solid time as well. Lane takes over, draws soft and now she has a win on the board, could well go on with it.
10 Energy Within (Bet Now:Β $17.00) probably lacks the class and ability of some of these, but she does keep trying and is honest. Got the maiden win out of the way at Geelong last time, sitting off the speed before angling into clear air and in a driving go, finished best. Draws soft and can sneak a first four spot.
Race 8. (19:30) Ladbrokes Switch (bm70) 1300m
Think the Saturday form is the way to go here in the get out so I’m with 6 Need New Friends (Bet Now:Β $3.30). Few weeks between runs for the Danny O’Brien camp since racing at Caulfield where he was given a peach run in transit and loomed to win but had to settle for a close up second to a talented mare in Score. That reads well for this.
1 Excelida (Bet Now:Β $3.50) doesn’t win out of turn but reckon she’s going well and not far off another win. Ran over 1100m at Caulfield just over two weeks back and finished off her race with real purpose from off the pace when second to Miss Albania. The winner was dominant and the margin of 0.75L flattered Excelida somewhat, but this mare does find a winnable race.
2 Bel My Pago (Bet Now:Β $19.00) is a very interesting runner. Former WA mare that makes her Victorian debut for Lindsey Smith. Showed good promise when racing in the West and built up a tidy record with solid form around her. Liked the way she went in a recent Colac jumpout and I think has to be respected.
