Nine races will be run and won at Sandown on Sunday, where it is Grand National Hurdle Day. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out ten metres for the entire circuit.
Grand National Hurdle 🏆: View the Field for the Grand National Hurdle
Race 1. (11:55) Ladbrokes Hrdl (bm120) 3400m
I’m a bit surprised 5 Wolfe Tone (Bet Now: $4.20) isn’t favourite. Yes, he has convictions on the flat, but if you go solely off what he produced at his Hurdle debut at Pakenham last time out, you could have understood them having a throw at the stumps in the Grand National because gee he was impressive and the turn of foot was very likeable. Confident he goes close.
1 Northern Voyage (Bet Now: $3.40) is a WaterBott trainer jumper that resumes. This guy hasn’t raced April when down the track in a feature Pakenham Hurdle behind Ancient King. Been given a good break and two jumps trials to get ready have been quite good.
If there is value, it clearly lies with 3 San Remo (Bet Now: $9.00). His two jumps starts has seen them both at the Bool, bolting up to win the maiden three back and then last start he kept grinding away when a narrow second to Bee Tee Junior, who pushed the champion Tallyho Twinkletoe at Pakenham, so that form reads very well for this, yet San Remo is double figures.
Race 2. (12:35) Grand National Hurdle 4200m
I think the class and weight pull gets 3 Ablaze (Bet Now: $2.60) home but this should be a ripping race. Star jumper who could well head to UK next year and test himself on the world stage. Forget he went around in the Stayers Cup last time out. I was keen on him, but hindsight being a wonderful thing, they just went too slow and he doesn’t have the turn of foot. He was actually okay to the line and through it. He can bounce back.
1 Tallyho Twinkletoe (Bet Now: $2.20) is a champion, make no mistake of that, and with him being a champion, he’s being asked to carry a weight set for a champion, 73.5kg. Just won at Pakenham last time out, but I think Pateman was being pretty kind to him, knowing there’s this race along with Ballarat. He’ll give an almighty sight.
If you’re a fan of Tallyho Twinkletoe, then you have to like 4 Bee Tee Junior (Bet Now: $7.50). He went within a lip of beating the Kiwi champ at Pakenham, and did fire in an unsuccessful protest. The wetter the better for him, so a dry track here is a query, but hard to knock the way he’s going and stable do fire towards the end of the season.
Race 3. (13:15) Crisp Steeple 4200m
Half decent steer and 5 Felix Bay (Bet Now: $3.00) wins. Can make a case that a half decent steer and he wins his past couple, most notably last time out at Pakenham where it was just an odd steer, very negative, and yes, the horse is quirky, but there’s patient and far too patient. He’s flying this horse and deserves a big race win.
2 Slowpoke Rodriguez (Bet Now: $3.00) has been up a fair while but found winning form last time out in the Mosstrooper where he was ridden a very confident race by Pateman and his class late came to the fore when edging clear of stablemate Killarney Kid. Narrow second to Wells in this race last year. Going well enough to go one better this year.
I’m wary of 6 The Dominator (Bet Now: $4.60), who is well named given he does like to race from the front and control things, which is what he did at Pakenham last time out and he gave his rivals a spanking under a lovely ride from Tom Sadler, who does seem to get on very well with the horse. If left alone in front, he can pinch this.
Race 4. (13:55) Ladbrokes Multi Builder (bm78) 2400m
With due respect to connections, outside a couple of these, this is a bludger of a race. All things being equal, 2 Tigre Royale (Bet Now: $1.75) should win. Archie Alexander has this stayer going really well at the moment, winning three on the bounce, with the latest seeing him tough it out strongly at Randwick. Form out of that has been suspect, but this is such a thin race.
3 Meteor Light (Bet Now: $3.70) is an improver here. He ran over 2400m on the Hillside track last Wednesday when leading at a good clip and in an unusual performance, he gave in pretty cheaply and was disappointing. Was found to be lame post race, so there were excuses. He’ll lead this field up and give plenty of cheek.
5 Grey Khan (Bet Now: $11.00) can run third or fourth. Peter Gelagotis trained stayer that’s racing in okay form without jumping up and down. Down the track behind Meteor Light last time out, but I think firmer footing won’t harm his chances and gets in okay after the claim for Riordan. Shocked if he won, but can fill a minor spot.
Race 5. (14:30) Ladbrokes Odds (bm64) 1200m
I’m always wary of Synthetic to Turf, but I think there’s enough in the debut win of 7 A Pinch Of Luck (Bet Now: $3.00) to suggest she’s pretty good. I’ve gone back through the last month or so and the several meetings on the Ballarat Synthetic. Her time over 1100m was equal fastest of the last 10 or so races over that track/distance the past month, and she did it without being fully extended. I think she can measure up here.
1 Celestial Sol (Bet Now: $4.20) is a Chris Waller trained colt that comes here off the back of what was a pretty good first up win in a maiden at the Valley. It was awful conditions that day, but what I liked is he surged when required and ran through the pain barrier to win. Can sit just off the speed from the gate and no doubt he’ll be better suited on firmer footing.
4 Cumberbatch (Bet Now: $11.00) is a Price/Kent trained three year old that comes to town off the back of a win on the Synthetic at Pakenham where he didn’t exactly quicken when asked, but kept chipping away and finished best to score. Harder here, but have to respect the stable.
Race 6. (15:05) Ladbrokes Odds (bm70) 1200m
I’m in the fan club of 6 Frondeur (Bet Now: $2.20) and I think she can resume a winner. Created a big impression after starting her career with two wins. Then stepped up to Stakes company in the Kevin Hayes when held but far from disgraced behind How Womantic. Loved the jumpouts leading into the resumption and with the claim, she’s beautifully in.
4 High Excalebration (Bet Now: $6.00) looks to be in for a good prep for the Jerome Hunter team. Jumped out well prior to resuming last Wednesday at Sandown where she finished off strongly from off the speed but just missed out on the win when second to Elite Legacy, who is flying. Think that form reads okay for this and stable is starting to find some form.
Good little test here for 7 Bons Abroad (Bet Now: $5.00) but you had to be impressed by her first up win here last Wednesday when sitting off a fast speed before Olly brought her wider and she let down hard late to grab them in the last couple of strides. Fitter, up to 1200m and good lead I think is that Olly sticks. Hard to beat.
Race 7. (15:40) Ladbrokes Switch (bm64) 1600m
2 Regardsmaree (Bet Now: $4.20) has the right form to be very competitive here. On the quick back up after racing at Caulfield last Saturday where she got back in the run and worked home strongly late despite doing a bit wrong when fourth to Mystery Shot. No horse of that class here and with the claim, she’s well in at the weights.
10 Legend Of Zorro (Bet Now: $4.80) is an Andrew Noblet trained son of Toronado that comes here off the back of a strong maiden win on Mildura Cup Day @ Swan Hill. Put into a lovely spot by McNeil and was never getting beat from around 250m out. Harder here but can measure up.
The best version of 15 Collectable (Bet Now: $15.00) is certainly capable. Really good resumption behind Sovereign Award at Sale before going to Sandown where she got back in the run and closed off okay without threatening. Been a while between wins, but is going well I think.
Race 8. (16:15) Ladbrokes Same Race Multi-bm64 1300m
Found this a very tricky race to sort out with confidence. The safe option is 1 Mean Mister (Bet Now: $7,00) because you know what you’re going to get with him. He’ll put himself on speed, roll, kick hard and give you such an honest run for your money. Draws wide, but has the speed to come across to get near the front and prove hard to run down.
9 Altimeter (Bet Now: $8.50) is a James Cummings trained gelding that should be a leading contender. Was nearing a maiden win and it finally came at the Valley last time out, knuckling down strongly late to get the job done in very trying conditions. Think he’s much better suited on firmer footing here and in the right stable.
2 Hurricane Fighter (Bet Now: $6.50) is a Michael Moroney trained gelding that had jumped out well prior to resuming at Geelong where he got back to near last in the run and while he was never a winning threat, but worked home with purpose. If the tempo is genuine here, which it should be, he’ll launch late.
Race 9. (16:50) Ladbrokes Cash In (bm64 2100m
14 Wristband (Bet Now: $8.00) isn’t the most reliable horse going around, but he’s around the mark more often than not and has finally got a win next to his name after getting the job done at Sale. Had a battle early on in the straight but finished off strongly and was too good. Draws soft and Lane takes over.
8 Melarita (Bet Now: $2.70) is racing very well this time in. Put together a couple of nice wins on the bounce to start the prep before going to this track/distance when leading and fighting on well when third to Lunar Flare, who of course won next start in the race mentioned above, so the form reads well, maps well and McNeil is back on.
5 Lord Of Darkness (Bet Now: $20.00) can fill a first four spot. Paul Preusker trained stayer that comes here a few weeks between runs after racing at Bendigo where he wasn’t entirely happy on the heavy track and battled away. Firmer footing suits and the claim for Rawiller helps.
