Afternoon racing returns to Moonee Valley this Saturday for a strong nine event program. The weather is fine, the track is soft (5) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (11:40) Dominant Homecare Products Handicap 1200m
1 Anjana (Bet Now: $1.65) looks a near standout here and you’d think only bad luck beats her. Electric debut win at Wangaratta before going to Ballarat last Wednesday where she was well backed and backed up that confidence with a six length romp of her rivals. Bit more depth here, but she’s going about it the right way.
Couple of these met in a May 18 jump out at Flemington, 7 She’s Sensational (Bet Now: $8.50) and Goldifox, with the former clearly getting the points. On speed all the way and looked to travel much better in winning the jump out in reasonable time. Looks a good type and while I doubt she wins, she runs well.
10 Goldifox (Bet Now: $9.00) is a handy daughter of Foxwedge who resumes for the Corstens team. This girl had two runs in the Autumn, debuting with a placing at Bendigo in a hot maiden before going to the Adelaide Magic Millions where she finished midfield. Trialled up enormous on Monday at Cranbourne and maps well.
Race 2. (12:15) Bernadette Turner Handicap 1200m
1 William Thomas (Bet Now: $2.30) on top for me. Above average three year old for the John Price yard who hasn’t raced since late April at Caulfield where heavily backed and under a peach from Olly, he got the job done. Freshened up with this Series in mind and I think ability wise, he’s the one to beat for sure.
2 Bel Sonic (Bet Now: $5.00) is three weeks between runs since resuming at Caulfield where he had three wide cover throughout before getting clear and letting down hard, looking the winner, but the race fit Exceltara proved too good. Liked what I saw in a Werribee trial on Monday and is proven at the Valley.
13 Usain Bowler (Bet Now: $16.00) is a John Sadler trained three year old who has had two career outings, both of which at Pakenham on the turf and synthetic respectively. Debuted with the turf win before going on the synthetic where he was off the map and ran a shocker. If he’s right, I think he runs well.
Race 3. (12:50) Ladbrokes Back Yourself Handicap 1200m
5 Divine Quality (Bet Now: $4.40) looks the one to beat here for the Robbie Griffiths team. She drops a fair bit in depth after contesting the Straight Six at Flemington where she loomed large to win but just found First Among Equals too good. Third up, so she should be hard fit, ready to go, back to mares grade.
7 Moonlites Choice (Bet Now: $4.80) is a high quality mare that resumes for Darren Weir. This girl hasn’t raced for close to 11 months but when she was last in work, she showed signs that she could be a low level Spring Carnival horse. Trialled well on Monday at Werribee and I believe she has had a further jump out a couple of weeks prior, so she’ll be forward to run well.
She’s not reliable, but the map says 1 Hear The Chant (Bet Now: $10.00) will get a decent run near the pace. Good win against the mares three weeks back at Caulfield when ridden a treat near the speed by Micky Dee and proving too good. Should get a lovely run off the pace to perhaps offset the weight rise and is a must for exotics I think.
Race 4. (13:25) Dominant MVRC Partnership Handicap (78) 1000m
4 Belwazi (Bet Now: $9.50) is a Jerome Hunter trained speed demon that is first up. Proven Valley specialist, albeit over the 955m, but has won over 1000m before. Good fresh record and the recent trial was very encouraging to the eye. Market will be the guide, but off the trial, she looks forward enough to my eye.
3 You’ve Been Had (Bet Now: $4.60) a definite threat for me. Lisa Enright looks to have a very good horse on her hands here in the shape of this gelding. Has slowly taken her time with him, building up his confidence at the provincials where she could easily have brought him to town. Exciting prospect so keen to see what he does.
13 Balancing Act (Bet Now: $10.00) is a Brent Stanley trained mare that resumes. Her Spring/Summer prep ended in the Bow Mistress during the Tassie Carnival when finishing down the track behind Gogo Grace. Thought she was one of the stand outs at the Werribee trials on Monday, so she’s a big watch here.
Race 5. (14:05) Goodlife Essendom Handicap (84) 1500m
Looking at this race with Jamaican Rain out. 2 Hectopascal (Bet Now: $9.00) for me in a tough race for the mares. She looked in a bit of trouble a couple of weeks back at Sandown but when Ethan Brown got the split, she burst through and won impressively. Looks to be a bit more depth here, but she’s in career best form and should be respected against this lot.
10 Evil Lil (Bet Now: $10.00) comes through the Hectopascal race mentioned above where I thought Williams gave the horse every chance and she hit the front, looking home, but was bloused late by the Weir mare. Williams remains on which is a good lead and if she is the one chasing, she should take some beating.
7 Fudged (Bet Now: $26.00) is a Cindy Alderson trained mare who finished down the track in the Hectopascal race mentioned above. She was a drifter in betting and ran accordingly but was nearer the inside, which wasn’t the spot to be. Horror second up record also so third up here, I think she’s a potential improver.
Race 6. (14:45) Cafetto Kate O'Sullivan Mile 1600m
2 Akavoroun (Bet Now: $7.00) gets the nod for me in a race I don’t have much confidence in. His two runs back from a long spell though have been quite good, the latest seeing him run fourth to Moss ‘N’ Dale at Flemington after attempting to lead all the way. Has run well here before and on speed, he’ll give a sight.
4 Jacquinot Bay (Bet Now: $6.50) is an absolute beauty for the Hayes/Dabernig team and despite rising eleven years of age, he seems to be racing as well as ever. He can at Caulfield three weeks ago and was very game in defeat when a close up second to Riyadh. Not good stats here but has contested stronger races.
13 Rib Eye (Bet Now: $8.50) is going really well for Clinton McDonald at the moment. Ran a beauty in the Moss ‘N’ Dale race mentioned above, sitting back and finishing off with real purpose to run second. He can sit much closer in the run this time around and did win nicely third up last prep so the signs are there he’ll run well.
Race 7. (15:25) Dominant Martin Ralston Cup 2040m
I reckon now he has found some form, 11 My Nordic Hero (Bet Now: $4.80) can go on with it. He was beaten quite convincingly by Boom Time last time out at Flemington but he stuck on well and beat the rest comfortably. Should ease back for good cover here from the draw and with the right drag up, he’ll go close.
5 High Church (Bet Now: $12.00) is the big watch here. He’s the one that does have a touch of class on his side and is getting fitter. Two runs back now for the Weir camp and he has been quite good each time he has stepped out, the latest resulting in a sixth to dominant winner Boom Time but his individual splits were strong. He’s the one with upside and fresh legs, so seriously respecting him.
7 Grey Lion (Bet Now: $9.50) is a Matt Cumani trained gelding who resumed a tick under three weeks back over 2000m at Caulfield where he was confidently backed to win but to my eye was a touch disappointing behind Magnapal. Up to 2040m in a fast run race looks more his go and he thrives when he gets give in the track, which is what he should get here.
Race 8. (16:05) Dominant 60 Years Handicap 1600m
1 Iconoclasm (Bet Now: $2.20) just picks himself here I think. Darren Weir has got this horse absolutely flying. He’s doing all the work in the run but is still proving far too classy. He’s been doing that at Flemington. Can he do it at a totally different beast in Moonee Valley? If he can, I think he wins comfortably again.
3 Gaulois (Bet Now: $9.00) …dear me. The ability is there to win a Stakes race but between the ears, either nothing is there. Or there is something but it’s not good. Looked the winner last time out at Rosehill but turned it up once again when third to Lisdoonvarna. He can win, but without me because he’s cost me, but concede he’s a threat.
Why is 12 Woulda Thought So (Bet Now: $14.00) $15+? Was on him in the race won by Iconoclasm mentioned above and gee I thought he ran well from the back behind the dominant winner. He draws to sit much closer in the run this time around, and while I doubt he beats the Weir horse, he is clear overs. Should be single figures.
Race 9. (16:35) WT Partnership Handicap (90) 1200m
10 Wise Hero (Bet Now: $3.90) is a John Price trained gelding who is three weeks between runs since resuming at Caulfield over the 1100m where he was heavily backed late but just ran out of condition when third to Inn Keeper. Has a good record at the Valley and that resumption should bring him right on.
2 Camdus (Bet Now: $4.80) is a quality galloper for Darren Weir who was kept very safe in betting when resuming over 1200m at Morphettville where he was ridden a peach by Lane, settling off the pace before getting clear and attacking the line hard late over the final 150m to win. Good record here and beautifully in after the claim.
6 Leodoro (Bet Now: $12.00) is a Mick Kent trained sprinter who can be hit and miss at times but on his day he is certainly capable of beating these with the right run in transit. He last raced in late April at Caulfield where he got a mile back and was never in the hunt behind Flying Murty. He can win this if the breaks go his way.
