Eight races will be run and won under the lights at Canterbury this Friday. The weather is fine, the track is heavy (8) and the rail is out six metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (17:45) TAB Handicap 1200m
Want to give 8 Single Honor (Bet Now: $9.50) another chance. Was on his back when he debuted on the Kenso track and didn’t really fire a shot behind Hilal, but he didn’t get the clearest of paths in the straight. Trialled very well prior to that and is bred to handle a wet track, so think he can bounce back.
Very interesting runner is 5 Kooled (Bet Now: $2.90), a Frosted colt on debut for Team Hawkes. Both trials have come at Rosehill, winning in December before being freshened up and closing off strongly when fourth under no real pressure. Stable gets J Mac to steer, so that’s a good enough lead for me.
2 Mandalong Cash (Bet Now: $12.00) draws terribly, but the form around him does read very well. On debut was a solid fourth to Stay Inside before going the Inglis Millennium where he was six wide no cover, so forget he went around behind Profiteer. This looks much easier. Just needs luck from the draw.
Race 2. (18:15) Iron Jack Plate 1250m
2 Military Parade (Bet Now: $1.65) looks the winner. Team Hawkes trained gelding who was very good from the back on debut here before going to Warwick Farm when back again and finishing off strongly when second again. His barrier manners are bad, but the engine he has under the hood is better than this lot IMO.
7 Spirituality (Bet Now: $4.50) has decent enough form around her to give this a shake. Resumed a few weeks ago at Warwick Farm on Australia Day when near the speed and battling away okay despite seemingly having every chance when third to impressive winner Jenga. Lands near the front and takes running down.
3 Rapids (Bet Now: $10.00) is a very interesting runner. Returns to racing as a gelding for Chris Waller after his less than flattering debut at Warwick Farm back in October. Two trials to get ready have been solid enough to the eye and overall, he doesn’t strike a strong maiden, so he could surprise at odds.
Race 3. (18:45) Night Sprint Series Heat 5 (72) 1100m
3 Key Largo (Bet Now: $3.70) is in a real purple patch at the moment for Bryce Heys and finds a winnable metro race IMO. Strong win two back at Gosford before repeating the dose at Canberra, letting down strongly from off the speed and getting the job done. If he can hold leaders back, he’ll be hard to hold out late.
2 Vienna Rain (Bet Now: $3.10) is a WaterBott trained four year old that resumes. Hasn’t raced since August 8 at Rosehill when running last behind subsequent Group l winner and star filly Montefilia. Looked sharp in a recent trial win and has placed in both first up runs at this track. Leading chance.
1 Kosciuszko (Bet Now: $6.50) is a beauty. Puts himself on speed and tries very hard, as we saw when winning here last time out, leading throughout and though getting the staggers at the end, the photo went his way in a close finish. Should lead this field up and give a bold sight.
Race 4. (19:15) Cabra Vale Diggers Handicap (72) 1100m
Strike while the iron is hot it seems like with 1 Brazen Gem (Bet Now: $1.70), a mare who is going super for Bjorn Baker. Did plenty of work in the run when racing here last Friday night but in the end, she just had too much for them and was dominant. This race looks not much harder, J Mac sticks and gets run of the race from the draw.
5 Estrado (Bet Now: $5.50) tends to save her best for Canterbury so getting back here is a big tick for her. Won here three back before being wide no cover at Rosehill. Then went to Warwick Farm and worked home strongly late when third to Vulpine. Give in the track helps and Rachel King is back on.
7 Empress Bea (Bet Now: $11.00) is a daughter of Deep Field for Ron Quinton who resumes. Hasn’t raced since October when down the track at Warwick Farm behind a handy mare in Instant Attraction. Two trials leading in have been just fair, but can sprint well fresh and will be strong at the end.
Race 5. (19:45) Australian Chinese Jockey Club Handicap (68) 1550m
The jockey upgrade swings me the way of 5 Harmonium (Bet Now: $2.70). With clear air, she goes close to winning here last time out. JVO landed the box seat but just couldn’t get clear running at any stage and it was ugly, ugly viewing if you were on. J Mac takes over and hopefully the rub of the green goes his way this time around.
4 Anotherthinkcomin’ (Bet Now: $4.00) will likely lead this field up and give a bold sight. Led throughout and bolted up to break the maiden two back at Wyong before going to Gosford where he led and looked home, but was nabbed late when third. Think if he finds the front and gets control, could well pinch it.
The Blinkers off/Winkers on set up is there for 2 Jack The Lad (Bet Now: $6.00), who has been slightly disappointing in two runs back from a spell. Latest effort at Warwick Farm, he was on speed and seemed to get every chance, but didn’t finish it off. His best is good enough so keen to see how he goes.
Race 6. (20:15) Remembering Louie Bene Handicap (72) 1900m
2 Dylan’s Romance (Bet Now: $6.50) looks the leader and we know that on speed is no disadvantage at Canterbury. Led and copped pressure last time out at this track/distance but stayed on and was more than sound in defeat when running a close up fifth to Mubariz. Should lead comfortably and give a bold sight.
7 Silent Agenda (Bet Now: $3.90) is bursting to win a race for Joe Pride. Has been close up his past few, the latest coming last Friday night at this track/distance when looming to win but couldn’t quite get past California Longbow in a close finish. Should get a positive steer from the gate and prove hard to beat.
1 Dalmatia Prince (Bet Now: $4.60) tends to save his best for Canterbury and third up from a break, should just about at peak fitness. Caught the eye fresh at Warwick Farm before going to the Kenso track where he didn’t handle the conditions behind Flexible. Gets a much better set up this time around and J Mac is found to steer.
Race 7. (20:45) Evening Star (78) 1550m
Her winning strike rate, but this looks a perfect race for 5 Welsh Legend (Bet Now: $3.30). Resumed over 1300m at Randwick and what was notable was how well she paraded. She looked a very healthy mare and ran very well from the back behind a good mare in April Rain. She saves her best for Canterbury, has upside, gets a rise in trip, leading rider booked…think she’s the best on the night.
2 Bergen (Bet Now: $5.00) looks a key threat. He’s been given a mini freshen up since racing over the mile at Randwick where he got back off a moderate tempo and worked home well without threatening behind Soldier Of Love. This looks a much weaker assignment and gets in well after the claim.
7 Mercurial Lad (Bet Now: $8.00) could give some cheek in front. Unwanted in betting when resuming in the Bega Cup at the Sapphire Coast bur credit to him, he led throughout and was strong to the line in getting the job done. Likely leads this field up and if the track is playing on speed/rail, he comes right into contention.
Race 8. (21:15) The Agency Real Estate Handicap (72) 1250m
Like 3 Equation (Bet Now: $2.05) in the get out. Annabel Neasham trained three year old that did a good job to win fresh at Gosford I thought given he lad to lump 61kg and was first up off a decent spell. His class got him home under Tommy Berry. Maps to get run of the race in the box seat and prove hard to hold out.
14 Rule Of Law (Bet Now: $4.50) looks suited back to this sort of level. Pipped first up by Rocketing By before finishing down the track behind that horse again, this time in the Inglis Sprint. Not sure he’s that good of a horse, so like him back to benchmark company and off his first up effort, he’ll take some beating.
16 Blesk (Bet Now: $17.00) is a pretty handy galloper, who is resuming for John O’Shea. Hasn’t raced since September 10 at Hawkesbury when down the track on a bottomless track behind Get The Idea. He’s better on firmer footing and better over a sprint trip I feel, so resuming at 1200m I like and his two trials have been quite good.
