Ten races will be run and won at Randwick on Saturday. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out five metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (12:40) Precise Air Hcp 1200m
I don’t want to dive in for a bet, but 2 Paulele (Bet Now: $2.10 TOP ODDS) does look the most progressive of this lot. He won impressively to the eye on debut at the Valley, a race that has produced a couple of recent Blue Diamond winners in Tagaloa and Written By. The time was nothing flash, but it was the way he put them away that impressed me. Think he’s the one to beat.
1 The Art Of Flying (Bet Now: $7.00 TOP ODDS) has the race experience under the belt and that should hold him in really good stead against these, the majority of which are on debut. He comes through the Merson Cooper at Sandown won by Anamoe, and that race rated really well. It can be followed with confidence and he was good late. Hard to beat.
9 Forzanini (Bet Now: $17.00 TOP ODDS) is a Team Snowden trained filly on debut. Has had a couple of trials to get ready for start one. Safely when third in the latest trial over 1045m, but the last 20m or so and through the line, I liked the way she went, suggesting 1200m on debut will be fine for her, and is bred to handle wet ground.
Race 2. (13:15) Tab Highway Hcp (c2) 1300m
A bit of a throw at the stumps at a price in the shape of 14 Belleistic Lad (Bet Now: $15.00 TOP ODDS) for the Joseph/Jones team. Resumed over 1200m at Mudgee when lumping 60kg and was snagged back to near last to find cover and a sit. Got clear air late and worked home well in a good return. Tumbles down to 51.5kg after the claim and think he’ll be hard to hold out.
1600m back to 1300m is interesting with 1 Perfect Pitch (Bet Now: $4.80 TOP ODDS) but she does have the metro benchmark form, which is usually gold when it comes to the Highway. Was on her last Wednesday at Warwick Farm and think you could make a sneaky case to say she should have just about win. Bossy just had a tough time getting a proper clear path in the straight. Gets in well after the claim, handles wet ground and should be strong late.
I can understand why 3 Costas (Bet Now: $11.00 TOP ODDS) has been specked at odds in early betting given his very good wet track stats, plus his resumption at Scone. Had little luck in the straight and should have finished much closer behind Allez Rev in a good effort. Has placed on wet ground at Randwick previously, but that was in a past life when Waller had him.
Race 3. (13:50) Tab Highway Hcp (c2) 1300m
I’m with 12 Stonecold Flex (Bet Now: $14.00 TOP ODDS) in what looks an open Highway. Tas Morton trained gelding that was met with good market support at Coffs Harbour last time out. Just went too hard to find the front, spent all the petrol tickets and felt the pinch late when grabbed near the line by Power Bells. If he can get near the speed and not spend too much juice getting there, think he can run a positive race here.
2 Another One (Bet Now: $4.40 TOP ODDS) deserves another chance. Not sure what happened with him last time out at Rosehill, whether he got lost between runners or what, but he was quite flat for a few strides, then picked up late and was good through the line. Gets the claim for Sherry, draws out and does handle wet ground. Leading chance.
13 Loving Cilla (Bet Now: $6.50 TOP ODDS) looks to have her share of talent. Joseph Ible trained daughter of Reliable Man that was well backed when racing on Nowra Cup Day in a maiden and under a lovely ride from McDougall, the mare edged clear late and was impressive in winning. Back in trip on paper does look a query, but potential juice in the track will make this 1300m feel like 1400m+, and she’s bred to handle wet ground.
Race 4. (14:25) Blueberry Hills (bm88) 2000m
1 Elaborate (Bet Now: $12.00 TOP ODDS) looks really well placed up to 2000m for the Freedman camp. Resumed with a strong win at Rosehill on testing ground before going to the mile at Kembla where he beat all bar Matowi in a blanket finish. He’s racing like the 2000m will suit, likes racing at Randwick and has more upside than most. Hard to beat.
8 Accountability (Bet Now: $2.70 TOP ODDS) is heading in the right direction for the Waller camp. The chasing pack behind the front two were asleep two weeks ago and Accountability just had too much to do. Did a really good job to get as close as he did to Significance I think. That’s two runs now at 2000m and think with a bit of juice in this track, he’ll take some beating.
3 Mongolian Wolf (Bet Now: $31.00 TOP ODDS) could be a sleeper at odds here. He ran down the track behind Significance two weeks ago but the last 75m-100m, he was warming to the task late and was good to the line and through it. His record at around this distance range is quite solid and is fourth up here, so should just about be at peak fitness.
Race 5. (15:00) Sky Racing Active (bm78) 1600m
With that likely bit of cushion in the track, plus a great resumption, think 4 Fulmina (Bet Now: $2.20) is one of the better bets on the program. Resumed three weeks ago at Rosehill over 1500m and I loved the way she closed off late from the back, producing some of the best late splits of the race when a close up third to Two Big Fari. Her two previous second up runs were good, she’s a winner at Randwick on wet ground, upside, stable flying…think she just wins.
No surprise that 2 New Arrangement (Bet Now: $4.80) is on the seven day back up. His run last Saturday was more or less a barrier trial. Just had no luck at a vital stage and should have finished much closer behind Kirwan’s Lane. Gets J Mac steering, draws soft and handles a wet track, plus always respect Waller runners on the back up.
3 Betcha Flying (Bet Now: $7.00) is a mare who doesn’t win out of turn, but if you like Fulmina, which I do, then you have to respect this mare. She was very unlucky in the same Rosehill race Fulmina resumed in. Got badly held up behind the leaders and think with a clear path she goes close to winning. That’s the story of her life though. Either bad luck of finding one better. But including her with an improving track.
Race 6. (15:40) Ranvet (bm78) 1400m
10 Macushla (Bet Now: $13.00) will get a wet track and at the odds, I’m happy to speck her. Two runs in Australia for the Waller camp. First run was on a wet track at Rosehill and she just missed out on the win when pipped late by Misteed. Then went to Kembla on Gong Day and didn’t have the speed in the legs behind Stolen Jade. On a wet track, off a good speed, think she’ll run really well at odds.
It’ll be interesting to see how 5 Vitesse (Bet Now: $4.00) goes. It was if the rest of the field wanted Vitesse to win the race a fortnight back at Rosehill. J Mac took her straight to the front, she got total control and really, from the 800m onwards, she wasn’t going to get beat. Won’t get that sort of run here, but she’s honest and generally is around at this level.
4 Sausedge (Bet Now: $6.00) has an awful racing pattern but think she’s going super for Matty Dale. Had good market support two weeks ago at Rosehill where the tempo was clearly against her but she stayed nearer the inside, picked up and really finished her race off when third to Vitesse. If the tempo is more genuine this time around, she can take this out.
Race 7. (16:20) City Tattersalls Club (bm78) 1000m
I’m really keen on 10 Sally’s Day (Bet Now: $3.90). Ryan/Alexiou trained mare that resumed over 1000m on the Kenso track and in an on pace domination, I thought she was excellent from the back, producing the best late splits of the meeting behind Lillemor. She likes wet ground and second up last prep placed in the Denise’s Joy behind Fiteuse. Looks the one to beat.
5 Partners (Bet Now: $8.50) will lead this up and look the winner for a long way. Scott Singleton trains this speed demon, who resumes. Hasn’t raced since September 19 when tiring late but far from disgraced in defeat over 1200m here behind Athiri, who has since gone on to win at Stakes level. He’ll lead, run along and look the winner throughout. Last bit will be the test.
2 Stephan (Bet Now: $31.00) could be a sneaky blowout chance here at a big price. He comes through the Pandemic race from a fortnight back at Rosehill. He ran last, but thought the run had merit to it. Didn’t have the best of luck in the straight and should have finished closer. Back to a 78 and sitting off a fast speed, with clear air, a win wouldn’t shock.
Race 8. (17:00) Bisley Workwear Hcp 1400m
7 Edison (Bet Now: $3.00) is a tough nut for Bjorn Baker. Puts himself near the speed and tries his heart out. He was there to beaten two weeks ago at Rosehill but he found plenty under pressure and kicked back strongly to win. Was he lucky to win? Perhaps, but he made his own luck. The overall time relative to the day was plain, but I think potentially a reason for that was that those in front went too slow. A more rolling and genuine 1400m will suit him better.
10 Hilo (Bet Now: $3.70) is racing very well this time in. Godolphin gelding that is several weeks between runs since racing on Hunter Day at Newcastle where he ran a close up fourth in a good race won by Through The Cracks, who just ran well in a Villiers, so the form does read well, liked his recent tick over trial and I think maps okay from the gate.
13 Irish Songs (Bet Now: $19.00) is a Kurt Goldman trained gelding who is racing really well at the moment. Narrow second two back in the Snake Gully Cup to the then in form Regal Stage prior to racing at Rosehill where you could make a good case that he should have gone close to winning. Just no luck at a stage where Nisbet wanted to get clear to build momentum. A win here wouldn’t shock at all.
Race 9. (17:40) Heineken (bm88) 1200m
10 Kordia (Bet Now: $7.50) is a son of Epaulette for James Cummings that resumes. This bloke hasn’t raced since August 1 when backed with confidence but it was a meeting where you couldn’t settle near last and make up the ground to win so for him to run second to a tough nut in Man Of Peace was quite good. Trials leading in have been great and he does look the most progressive of this lot.
Back up to 1200m I do like for 7 Mo’s Crown (Bet Now: $3.90). Dominant winner two back over 1200m on Gong Day at Kembla Grange before coming back to 1100m at Rosehill and I just reckon that probably beat him in the end when a close up third to Pandemic. Now back up to 1200m, should land near the speed and prove hard to run down.
1 True Detective (Bet Now: $13.00) looks to have returned well. Chris Waller trained gelding that had a couple of soft trials prior to resuming at Rosehill where not much went his way in the straight and think he should have finished a touch closer behind Pandemic. Do like him up in trip and does have more upside than most.
Race 10. (18:20) Schweppes (bm72) 1400m
Very interesting placement here from Pakenham trainer Caroline Jennings with her filly 14 Arabian Hussey (Bet Now: $3.60). Assuming she’s running here in search of wet ground. She was heavily backed at Sandown last time out and under Olly, she gave them a proper spanking and ran good time relative to the meeting. With the lightweight, reckon they roll forward and give them something to catch.
Third up at 1400m, I am going to give 10 Zoumist (Bet Now: $15.00) another chance. Was on her back when she ran two weeks ago at Rosehill. Just took a little while to get into her work in a race where they really zipped home, but was good late behind Oscar Zulu. Think the bigger track, extra 100m and added fitness, all points to her running well.
8 Black Duke (Bet Now: $7.00) looks to have a decent engine under the hood. Was second up when racing in the Oscar Zulu race from a fortnight back at Rosehill. He had a suck run in behind and tried hard. Just found the Waller three year old too good on the day. Is a winner on heavy ground and like him up in trip.
