Belmont is where Perth racing takes place this Saturday where it is Hyperion Stakes Day. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out six metres for the entire circuit.
Race One (13:53) : Penfolds Plate 1000m:
Back Me: Not really a race I want to get involved in but I’ve landed with 9 Dashing Affair (Bet Now: $10.00). First starter for the Miller camp who draws wide here on debut but has looked the part in several trials, showing signs that she is well and truly capable of winning a race like this. Market will be the guide.
Big Danger: 8 Pearl Trade (Bet Now: $3.10) is a Trade Fair filly that resumes for the Alan Matthews yard. This girl debuted in February at Ascot where she was hard in the market and she didn’t quite get the job done, showing real signs of immaturity. Trial leading up to this race looked very sharp to the eye and should take some beating.
Long Shot: 10 Lady Hawke (Bet Now: $27.00) is a Tickets filly on debut for the Sigley camp. Trials have been nothing flash with no alarm bells to suggest she’s a star, but they have been satisfactory, and overall, this is one of the weaker two year old races in Perth for the season. Draws an inside gate and stable should always be respected.
Race Two (14:33) : Perth Racing Young Membership Handicap (1MW) 1600m:
Back Me: Really keen here on 9 Show Honey (Bet Now: $2.90). This former kiwi filly really struggled to break the duck in her first Australian prep last campaign, but she was contesting some pretty good races. Two for two this time in and each race she has been very impressive. She can go on with it here.
Big Danger: 8 Rare Coin (Bet Now: $14.00) was close up two back over 1200m at Pinjarra before stepping up to 1400m where Pateman had the horse out the back before peeling wide and building up some really good momentum to dash away from his rivals. Harder here, but off that last start effort, the mile will be ideal.
Long Shot: 11 Double Digit (Bet Now: $19.00) is a gelding who has only won the one from eight, but I thought there was good merit in his first up effort last Wednesday over 1400m here. Parked behind the speed and was in a bit of trouble getting clear air, but he finished off quite nicely. 1600m suits and is one for multiples.
Race Three (15:13) : Tabtouch Handicap (78+) 2100m:
Back Me: 10 Rosewood Hill (Bet Now: $3.00) goes on top for me. This mare is building up a really good record and I see no reason to jump off her here. She ran over 2200m here last Saturday in an easier race where Aaron Mitchell had the mare in a really good spot just off the pace and she finished best in a driving go. Pike goes on now and the quick back up is no issue, plus stable is in form.
Big Danger: 1 Respondent (Bet Now: $7.00) is a massive chance here. He is slowly getting back to peak fitness for the Kersley yard and his last start was a beauty. Got a mile back in the run and was seemingly struggling but I really liked the way he picked his feet up late behind My Magic Miss. 2100m is ideal, getting hard fit and has class.
Long Shot: 2 North Ridge (Bet Now: $8.00) is becoming a bit costly to follow for punters but there is no denying he is racing well. Just can’t quite crack it for another win. Ran over 2000m here a fortnight back where he tried hard but had to settle for a narrow second to My Magic Miss. The 100m rise in trip suits and is a key threat.
Race Four (15:53) : Kirin Megumi Handicap (66+) 1200m:
Back Me: 4 Sweet Ora (Bet Now: $5.00) is three weeks between runs since racing over 1000m here where she had a beaut sit just off the speed but despite that, she failed to come on and was quite disappointing when fifth to Woolibar. Gets in okay at the weights after the claim and I think 1200m will suit her.
Big Danger: 5 The Celt (Bet Now: $5.00) was a drifter in the market when racing at Ascot five weeks back against his own age where he had a nice run behind the tempo and finished best under Kate Whitten in a driving go. Takes on the older horses now, but does get the claim and though drawn wide, is a key threat.
Long Shot: 7 Presentatie (Bet Now: $7.00) is a hard mare to trust/follow, but she does find a very winnable race here. She resumed over 1000m here a fortnight back where she got back to last in the run but you had to like the way she finished off her race behind Two Silver Trees. Pike remains on which is a good lead.
Race Five (16:29) : Amelia Park Lodge Handicap 1000m:
Back Me: Looks a two horse race and I’m siding with 6 Yeah Dardy (Bet Now: $3.80). He resumed at the midweeks here against the older horses where he was wide most of the way, albeit with cover, but despite the trip, he attacked the line with purpose to get the win. Draws better now and Pike rides. Keen.
Big Danger: 5 Scalpel (Bet Now: $4.80) was nine weeks between runs when racing over this track/distance a fortnight back where he was backed as if unbeatable and despite doing a bit of work outside the speed, he proved too classy. Draws bad again, but he is very promising and will be in it for a long way.
Long Shot: 3 Belter (Bet Now: $6.00) is a really promising three year old that resumes for the Sean Casey yard. He has won only the one race, but he is a much better horse than what his record reads given he has contested some really good races throughout his career. Resumes with no trials, but he has the class/quality.
Race Six (17:05) : Heineken Handicap (72+) 1400m:
Back Me: 3 Flying Roar (Bet Now: $8.00) represents good each way appeal for me here. Jim Taylor trained five year old who resumed over this track/distance a fortnight back and put up a really good effort in defeat fresh when a close up fourth to Dark Royalty. Has a much better record second up and draws well.
Big Danger: 2 Astronomite (Bet Now: $10.00) is a horse that is out of form, but this is a thin race, so he wouldn’t need to improve much to go close here. He was awful last Saturday I thought. Had the charmed run behind them and just found nothing. That’s why Pike is off, but the 3kg claim for Kersley is a big help.
Long Shot: 11 Luke’s Gold (Bet Now: $12.00) is a talented four year old for the Sigley camp who rises sharply in grade/depth, but it’s hard to ignore what he did here two weeks back. Came with a brilliant finishing burst out wide to nab them in the shadows and show us the form he was in during the Carnival time last year. He can go right on with it now.
Race Seven (17:45) : Hyperion Stakes 1600m:
Back Me: 1 Scales Of Justice (Bet Now: $1.45) is really a $1.10 shot against this field. High class animal who resumed in the Belmont Sprint and was enormous in defeat I thought when second to Rock Magic given he was wide most of the way and did a stack of work throughout. Natural improvement, up to the mile, WFA…just wins.
Big Danger: 3 Disposition (Bet Now: $3.80) is the quinella horse. Ran a beauty himself in the Belmont Sprint. Got held up a touch in the straight when appearing to have something to offer and when he did get clear, he worked to the line with purpose. He too will be suited up to 1600m, but he doesn’t have the upside/brilliance of the top tip.
Long Shot: 5 Battle Hero (Bet Now: $16.00) is probably next best but without much confidence. He comes through the Belmont Sprint where he sat outside the speed and just weakened out of the race late in the piece behind Rock Magic. He’s better when ridden with cover, which is what should happen here with the gate.
Race Eight (18:25) : James Boags Premium Handicap (1MW) 1600m:
Back Me: 8 Humanity (Bet Now: $9.00) on top for me in the get out. This son of Al Maher is three weeks between runs since racing over 1300m here where he got back off the speed and finished off well without being a winning threat when third to Minus Looks. Ideally suited up to the mile and this is a thin race.
Big Danger: 3 Magic Rocket (Bet Now: $17.00) is on the quick back up for the Greg Kersley yard after racing over this track/distance last Saturday where he was midfield most of the way and just stayed there without making any really significant ground. This is a big drop down in depth and the claim for young Kersley helps big time.
Long Shot: 7 Indi Pacific (Bet Now: $7.50) is a quality mare for Trevor Andrews that resumed at Northam last Monday and you had to like the way she went about it, coming from last and finishing off with real purpose to run a close up second. Proven performer in town and has an excellent second up record.
