Sunny Coast will host their biggest race day on Saturday where it is Caloundra Cup Day. The weather is fine, the track is soft (5) and the rail is out two metres for the entire circuit.

Race 1. (12:07) XXXX Handicap (90) 1000m
Looks a lovely race for 2 Badajoz (Bet Now: $3.00). Godolphin galloper who has been very good in two runs back from a spell in Sydney, both times going close but just not quite getting the job done. Fast run 1000m here looks ideal and D Browne is the master of the Sunny Coast. Really keen, provided they ease back.
3 Invincible Express (Bet Now: $3.80) is a talented mare for David Vandyke who was good in her first two runs this campaign before going to the Lightning at Doomben where she had no luck at all in the straight when appearing to have something to offer behind Snitty Kitty. Back on her home track now, she should take some beating.
1 Sony Legend (Bet Now: $6.00) comes through the Hinkler at Doomben three weeks back and gee it was a tough watch if you backed him. Bailed away behind tired runners and was never ever clear, going to the line as if he was in a barrier trial. Give him better luck here and he’ll go awfully close.
Race 2. (12:42) Sumerveld Racing Stables Handicap (85) 1600m
4 Steamin‘ (Bet Now: $2.60) gets the nod for me here in tough race to sort out with confidence. He comes through the mile race on Ipswich Cup Day won by Lord Coconuts and I thought his effort was very good in defeat. Draws a much better gate here, Byrne steers and bigger track should him better.
1 Blackjack Bella (Bet Now: $3.40) can be a hard mare to trust, but she got back in the good books somewhat last time out over 1800m at the Gold Coast where she chased hard down the entire straight and got the win right on the peg. Now that she has got the win on the board, she could well go on with it.
7 Courageous Rock (Bet Now: $4.20) comes through the Lord Coconuts race on Ipswich Cup Day where he sat on speed throughout and fought on very strongly but just didn’t quite finish it off, finishing a close up fourth. On his home track now for the first time, he should take some beating.
Race 3. (13:17) Butler McDermott Lawyers Handicap (70) 1400m
2 Shipwrecked (Bet Now: $8.00) is right up to these on his best form. He ran at the Gold Coast last time out where he was a drifter in the market at double figure odds and ran accordingly but he wasn’t beaten far by the impressive winner Drumbeat’s Choice. Good record on big tracks so don’t rule him out.
15 Sweet Adaline (Bet Now: $6.50) is a smart looking filly for the Guy camp who ran over 1200m at the Gold Coast last time out and I thought her effort was pretty good in defeat, working home well late to run second to Turkana. Looks ideally suited up to the 1400m and she does appear well placed.
16 Seeking Asylum (Bet Now: $8.50) had her first run for the Edmonds camp over 1350m on Ipswich Cup Day where she looked like a few of the racegoers trackside- legless. Didn’t handle the track at all and finished a mile away from William Wallace. Much better suited on the bigger track and can bounce back hard.
Race 4. (13:57) Wimmers Premium Soft Drinks Bruce McLachlan Memorial 1200m
11 Saxton Rock (Bet Now: $15.00) resumed from a let up in the Ipswich 2YO race two weeks ago and given the pattern of the race, I thought his effort was very good in defeat. Got a mile back in a leader dominated affair and was never a winning threat, but his closing effort was very good. Bigger track and at 1200m are big ticks, he has the upside/fresh legs and the Matty Dunn polish.
4 Dynastic (Bet Now: $3.50) is a smart looking gelding for the Helen Page camp who debuted on his home track at the Gold Coast where he did a bit of work from the gate but he absolutely romped up when Griffin asked for the big effort. Draws a lovely gate here and Griffin remains. Obvious danger.
13 South Of France (Bet Now: $21.00) is the big watch here. He has had two runs for the Vandyke yard which came during the Autumn where he ran well without winning. Trialled here earlier in June and went very nicely to my eye. Stable has always had an opinion of him and he resumes on his home track.
Race 5. (15:17) BOQ Mooloolaba Handicap 1200m
Really keen to see 8 Care To Think (Bet Now: $4.60). Was down to run in a recent Highway at Rosehill, but I think he will take some beating here. He ran over 1400m at Grafton last time out where he settled down for a two horse fight and just missed out on the win. His two runs prior in strong races do read very well for this.
9 Clockwork Orange (Bet Now: $4.20) is a regally bred filly who did okay things when trained by the Hayes/Dabernig yard but she seems to be loving the sunshine state under the care of Toby Edmonds given she spanked them at her Queensland debut at the Sunny Coast when leading all the way and bolting up. Big watch here.
2 Secret Mo (Bet Now: $8.50) is the big improver here I feel. Lindsay Gough trained three year old who has really good ability but just certain things haven’t gone his way in recent times, whether it be wide gates/outclassed/weight. Browne jumps back on from an ideal draw and he has a fab record at the Sunny Coast.
Race 6. (15:57) The Pump House Caloundra Cup 2400m
Giving the nod to 4 Neverland (Bet Now: $4.00) but only just. She comes through the Brisbane Cup where she got back in a leader dominated affair but she worked home very nicely near the rail despite the tempo. This is a considerable drop in depth for this mare and she should be at peak fitness now.
6 My Diamantine (Bet Now: $16.00) is on the quick back up after racing in the Tatts Cup last Saturday where, despite starting long odds, you could make a case that she should have won. Got badly held up behind tired runners and was never really getting clear running. 2400m on the big track looks ideal.
8 Paragon (Bet Now: $34.00) is a knockout chance here at odds. John Sargent trained stayer who has been up a long time but I thought his effort in the Ipswich Cup was enormous. Just did a mountain of work from the gate, was wide throughout on a hot speed and still had the hide to fight on for fourth. Just an ounce of better luck here and he’ll take some beating.
Race 7. (16:32) HMR Projects Glasshouse Handicap 1400
7 Man Of His Word (Bet Now: $7.50) is a horse I am very keen on as an each way play. He ran in the Mumm last Saturday over the mile and gee it was just a strange ride by Lloyd. Got a mile back in the run and he was reluctant to let it down until it was far too late. The horse was enormous. Fast run 1400m on a big track…yep. Perfect.
14 William Wallace (Bet Now: $10.00) is a kiwi who has been low flying since coming to Australia. He looked no hope last time out over 1350m at Ipswich when last on the turn but once he balanced up, he absolutely savaged the line and won quite impressively. The pace will be hot here, so he’ll get his chance.
2 Snippets Land (Bet Now: $18.00) was good in the Moreton Cup behind Deploy before going to the Eye Liner at Ipswich where he didn’t receive the greatest of luck in running behind Monsieur Gustave. Not sure he handled the track either. Looks much better suited here and is a key threat for sure.
Race 8. (17:08) XXXX Gold Sunshine Coast Guineas 1600m
1 Acatour (Bet Now: $3.20) looks the clear horse to beat here. Resumed against the older horses in the Eye Liner at Ipswich and it was a hard watch if you backed him. Got a fair way back off the speed and Lloyd was picking his way through, about to burst and take the gap when it closed, got chopped out and that was the end of him. Surely he won’t get that bad luck here.
5 Zamex (Bet Now: $8.50) rises a fair bit in grade/depth but he is right up to these for sure. Matty Dunn trained galloper that has won a couple of Highways at Rosehill and has been ultra impressive each time, especially last start when lumping the big weight and picking them up from a hopeless position. Before the Highways, he was close up behind subsequent Stakes winner Niccanova.
17 Mia Rosa (Bet Now: $20.00) is the very interesting runner here. Thought she ran a beauty in the Roses before going to the Oaks where she didn’t quite run the trip out and was outclassed behind Egg Tart. Back to the mile looks ideal and with a fast tempo expected, look for her to launch late.
Race 9. Yalumba Wines Winter Provincial Sprinters Final (80) 1200m
3 All Summer Long (Bet Now: $6.50) ran over this track/distance on June 4 where he sat near the speed and tried hard but couldn’t quite lump the big weight successfully when fourth to Precision Strike. Gets really good weight relief and if he is ridden a bit more patiently here, he will be more effective.
13 Cobra Quick (Bet Now: $11.00) is a talented and consistent type for the Paul Duncan camp who has a really good record on his home track here. He ran over 1200m here last time out where he was a drifter in betting yet worked home very strongly late in the piece. Gets good weight relief here, he is tough and is best suited at 1400m.
1 Saipan (Bet Now: $14.00) is a beauty for the Ben Currie yard. He has won four of his last five, the latest coming over 870m at Toowoomba when shouldering 63kg and producing a brilliant finish between runners to grab the win near the peg. He has run out the 1200m strongly previously, so I don’t see the distance rise being an issue.
