Racing returns to the Parks track at Morphettville this Saturday for an eight race card. The weather is fine, the track is soft (6) and the rail is out two metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (13:16) Spring Carnival Handicap (75) 1250m
1 Handsome Thief (Bet Now: $1.70) is a Darren Weir trained galloper who couldn’t pick his feet up on the heavy track first up behind Written Era before being freshened up, running at Caulfield, and bouncing back nicely with a gutsy third to Mr Sneaky. He finds a very winnable race here and third up, he should be ready.
6 So Skilled (Bet Now: $6.50) is a Dan Shepherd gelding who won two races before being tipped out. He resumed over 1200m on the course proper three weeks back where he was hard in the market but didn’t really fire a shot, perhaps looking in need of the run behind Counter Spin. This looks a more suitable assignment.
2 Nipperkin (Bet Now: $8.50) is a mare in ripping form at the moment for the Barry Brook yard. She is three weeks between runs since scoring a sharp win over the 1250m here under a lovely ride from Gatt, who remains on. Clearly more depth, and taking on the boys, but she is a mare in form.
Race 2. (13:51) UBET Handicap (70) 1300m
1 Souffrant (Bet Now: $3.10) looks safe play here. Darren Weir trained colt who resumed with a sharp win at Bendigo before going to Sandown where he didn’t look entirely happy on the shifty track behind the very promising Lena’s Hero. That form should read best for a five horse 70 in Adelaide.
2 Glam Guru (Bet Now: $2.30) is a well bred filly for the Macdonald/Gluyas team who resumed over 1100m three weeks back on the course proper where she had a suck run behind the speed and while the win wasn’t narrow, I liked the way she toughed it out when challenged late and was holding her rivals at bay. Up to 1300m is perfect.
3 Unscopeable (Bet Now: $4.40) is a smart filly for Chris Bieg who broke her maiden status three weeks back over the short course on the main track where she chased hard the entire straight and finished best in a driving go. Much harder here with some nice types engaged, but there is only four rivals.
Race 3. (14:26) Schweppes Handicap (82) 1950m
9 Spanish Halo (Bet Now: $19.00) is an 11YO for Shane Coombs but gee he is racing with great heart and zest for his age. He comes through the Have Plenty race here two weeks back where he got a mile off them in the run and never really looked a winning chance but his final 200m was very good. I think if he can sit a touch closer in the run, he’ll turn the tables.
1 Lucky Paddy (Bet Now: $3.30) finds the easiest race he has seen for a long, long time. Darren Weir trained galloper who was well fancied last time out at Warracknabeal but didn’t really come on due to the slow tempo behind Not To Know. There should be good speed engaged here so he’ll get his chance.
The market support suggested that 4 Have Plenty (Bet Now: $3.30) would bounce back to form at this track/distance a fortnight back but it probably didn’t expect him to spank them and draw clear for a dominant win. In saying that, he had threatened to win and now that he has, he can go right on with it.
Race 4. (15:06) Medallion Homes Handicap (64) 1250m
11 Embecee Lil (Bet Now: $4.20) looks a great each way bet for mine. This daughter of Myboycharlie looked to win with a touch of quality in breaking the maiden status at Gawler on August 23, sprinting hard from off the pace and winning quite comfortably. She will lap up the wet track, has enormous upside and the form around her overall reads very nicely.
3 Rupture (Bet Now: $3.80) is a talented galloper that resumes for the Richard Jolly yard. He kicked off his career with three runs during the Autumn and ran quite well, ending the prep with a solid effort in the Port Adelaide Guineas. Looks to have come back well based on a recent trial and though suited over further, he does have a touch of quality.
8 Cobber (Bet Now: $12.00) is still a maiden for Ryan Balfour but surely a win is near. He ran over the 1050m on the course proper last Saturday where he looked disinterested for the first half of the race but one he balanced up in the straight, his finale was excellent. Looking for further, which he gets, and despite not winning a race, the form around him is good.
Race 5. (15:46) James Boags Premium Handicap (82) 1400m
9 Steel Frost (Bet Now: $3.10) is a former NSW galloper that made his SA debut a fortnight back over 1250m here and gee he made quite an impression. Got left a bit flat footed on the turn but once he picked up, he put them away quite quickly and was dominant in winning. He looks beautifully placed up to 1400m.
2 Ozi Choice (Bet Now: $3.10) is a good type for Darren Weir who should take some beating here back to this level. He ran over 1400m at Caulfield on August 19 where he ran a gutsy third to Here To There, who franked the form by winning an open handicap at the Valley. That reads very well for this.
10 Captain Duffy (Bet Now: $31.00) trialled up okay prior to resuming over 1250m here and he was too bad to be true behind Steel Frost, and he didn’t pull up 100% subsequent. He can be a hard horse to trust/follow, but he is a Stakes winner from this time last year and on his best form, he’s in this.
Race 6. (16:26) Hughes Limousines Handicap (70) 1400m
7 Supreme Polarity (Bet Now: $9.00) is a Phillip Stokes trained galloper who has been quite good without much luck this time in. Ridden upside down I thought last time out here but he still ran well even though he was well and truly beaten by Jamaican Rain. I think with a cold ride, he’ll be more effective.
2 Silvera (Bet Now: $5.00) is a very interesting runner here. Tony McEvoy trained galloper who has all the ability in the world but he definitely does have a few loose screws upstairs that need tightening. If he was anywhere near right, he’d spank these. Doubt that is the case here, but he has trialled up well.
10 Gronky (Bet Now: $14.00) is a gelding trained by Lloyd Kennewell who was given a beaut steer by Bowditch last time out at Murray Bridge. he looked in a bit of trouble but got the splits and savaged the line late to get the win. Super Crunch the runner up bolted in last week so the form does read well and he has upside.
Race 7. (17:06) Holdfast Insurance Handicap (70) 1400m
7 Super Crunch (Bet Now: $10.00) is a mare in really good form at the moment for the Shane Oxlade yard. She was well backed when racing over the Strathalbyn mile last Wednesday and aided by a nice ride on speed from Potter, the mare booted clear on the turn and never looked back. 1400m from the mile is some query, but she deserves a crack in town.
9 Harlem Child (Bet Now: $8.50) is a consistent mare for the Richard Jolly yard. She just doesn’t win which is the issue but she does try very hard, as we saw three weeks back where she stuck on really well in defeat behind the in form mare Nipperkin. Looking for further, which she gets here, and remains down in the weights with the claim.
6 Chosen Angel (Bet Now: $23.00) is a staying mare first up for Marilyn Smith after mini break where she ran quite well over trips during the Winter, including a win at metro level. Normally takes a run or two to find her best, but she has residual fitness on her side and if they go hard in front, she’s the one.
Race 8. (17:40) Adelaide Galvanising Handicap (70) 1000m
14 With Hope (Bet Now: $9.50) is a mare in really good form for the Ken Sweeney yard. She has won her past two starts, both over the short course and both times she has sat on speed and kicked hard, the latest coming at Gawler under Paul Gatt. Gets good weight relief here and she is a hard fit mare in form.
4 Nodoubtaboutit (Bet Now: $2.70) is on the seven day back up for the Stokes yard after racing on the course proper last Saturday where she copped pressure on speed in a strong race yet beat them off and kicked for home, only to be nabbed late by Showpero, a blacktype mare. Just has to overcome the nasty gate to be a threat.
6 Federal Court (Bet Now: $10.00) just looked in need of the run fresh behind Nodoubtaboutit before dropping back in grade at Murray Bridge over 900m where he got back and worked home well with purpose behind Kurkova. He is a bit of a risk when he comes to town, but third up now, he should be close to peak fitness.
