Race 1. (12:25) Quayclean (Bm74) 1100m
13 From The Block (Bet Now: $SP.00) for me in the opener. Team Jolly trained gelding that is 3/3 this time in, the latest being three weeks ago at Morphettville where he wasn’t 100% happy on the bog but he made a mess of them, once again. Confident he measures up.
11 Verdoux (Bet Now: $SP.00) comes back to 1000m after resuming over 1100m at Caulfield. He landed in a decent spot in transit and was there to win but just couldn’t quite finish the job when a narrow second to handy mare Pop Award. Good upside to come, he appeals.
5 Flyer (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a Jason Warren trained mare that resumes. She is first up, having not raced since May 31 at Caulfield when off speed and closed off well enough in defeat when second to Big Swinger. Just one soft jumpout for the return but her best is good enough to be dangerous.
Race 2. (13:00) Catanach's Jewellers (Bm74) 1800m
15 Skippers Canyon (Bet Now: $SP.00) takes beating after a first up win over 1400m at Sandown. He got a really good ride by Stackhouse but even allowing for that, he was impressive the way he put them away after getting back. Good upside to come and up in trip, he takes beating.
12 Federer (Bet Now: $SP.00) is one of the key chances after his second at Flemington last time when off speed and kept chasing with purpose but couldn’t quite get there. He probably isn’t going to reach the heights he once promised, but hard fit here, he’s a leading contender.
11 Farnboriugh (Bet Now: $SP.00) is knocking on the door for Team Freedman. He ran third over the mile at Sandown last start, getting a fair way out of his ground but didn’t mind the way he finished his race off in defeat. If within range, he can win.
Race 3. (13:35) Graeme Smith's 70Th Birthday Celebration (Bm78) 1400m
7 Gala Queen (Bet Now: $SP.00) should appreciate a rise to 1400m after racing over 1100m here three weeks ago when first up. She just didn’t seem 100% happy between runners and only got warm very late. Like her up in trip and if she gets room to move, she’ll take holding out.
4 Cindy Falls (Bet Now: $SP.00) comes back to 1400m after racing a few weeks ago in the Rising Stars Final. She got into a decent spot in transit and tried hard but she just couldn’t quite see it through when a narrow third to Lake Vostok. If she holds her form, she’ll be around the mark.
2 Anahita (Bet Now: $SP.00) is dangerous with her best. She is several weeks between runs since racing over 1300m at Sandown when off speed and chased with purpose in a good effort in defeat. Not sure she wins but is a first four prospect.
Race 4. (14:10) Sportsbet Race Previews (Bm84) 1400m
11 Freak Of Nature (Bet Now: $SP.00) each way in a very open contest. He ran last Saturday over 1200m at The Valley when back near last in the run and while he was never a winning threat, I loved the way he closed off late in the piece. If he can settle closer in the run, he’ll take holding out.
8 Spanish Blaze (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a very interesting runner. Former UK galloper that makes his Australian debut for Team Freedman. He has jumped out well in readiness for the return and despite the wide gate, I think the grounding is there to say he’s here to play. Watch betting.
3 Home Rule (Bet Now: $SP.00) is racing well and is a key chance. He is three weeks between runs since racing at this track/distance when ridden off speed and kept chasing with purpose in a good effort in defeat when fourth. More positive ride, he takes beating here I say.
Race 5. (14:45) Vain Stakes 1100m
Gee I reckon the market has completely missed one. 8 Hay Street (Bet Now: $SP.00) did some really nice things as a juvenile and has strong form lines around him from the Autumn, especially the debut at Newcastle when narrowly beaten by Buffalo. He has looked strong in trial work in Sydney to prepare for the return and this isn’t a deep race.
2 Shining Smile (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a beauty for Team Hayes and is one of the leading contenders. He is four weeks between runs since a first up win down the straight at Flemington where he continued his love affair with the short course and the Flemington straight when an impressive winner.
5 Jimmy Recard (Bet Now: $SP.00) has been given a minin freshen up for Ciaron Maher, his last run coming on July 5 when a strong winner of the Next Gen Final down the straight at Flemington. Has jumped out well since and should be strong late.
Race 6. (15:25) Quezette Stakes 1100m
10 Ferivia (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a filly with an engine under the hood for Phillip Stokes. She won like a rocket on debut at Murray Bridge before going to the midweeks at Sandown. If Neindorf was able to get to the outside, I have no doubt she wins. Instead, she came inside in the inferior ground and just missed. Keen to see how she goes.
6 Signature Scent (Bet Now: $SP.00) comes here with fresh legs, five weeks between runs since a track/distance win where she got better as the race went on and was strong through the line in winning. Good test here at Stakes grade, but a recent jumpout was sharp and she’ll be strong late.
1 The Playwright (Bet Now: $SP.00)…I don’t think she’s well treated at the weights but when you look at her CV, it’s warranted. She looks the leader and with B Shinn on, she’ll give an almighty sight.
Race 7. (16:00) Regal Roller Stakes 1200m
2 Brudenell (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a Kris Lees trained gelding that resumes. This guy is first up, having not raced since June 7 in the Bob Charley when a game second to In Flight, continuing a good prep. Trialled up super for the return, good racing style…dangerous.
10 Pop Award (Bet Now: $SP.00) is terribly weighted based on ratings but she is a line finder and should be better for the first up win here, where she did work in the run but was just too good. Good test here. Keen to see how she goes.
1 Arkansaw Kid (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a Team Hayes trained gelding that resumes. He is first up, having not raced since the Newmarket when far from disgraced in defeat behind Joliestar. He does love racing at Caulfield and has jumped out well for the return so watch betting and see what it does.
Race 8. (16:35) P.b. Lawrence Stakes 1400m
8 Moira (Bet Now: $SP.00) is flying for Chris Waller and confident she wins this and then can stamp herself for the Memsie. She resumes after just one run in the Autumn, where she was far from disgraced in the Doncaster. Trial work in Sydney has been elite and the lead for me with her is D Lane, who is the #1 Melbourne rider for Waller, is riding this girl.
1 Private Eye (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a class animal for Joe Pride that resumes. He probably isn’t the horse he once was, but he looks to have trialled up really well for the return and 1400m fresh I like for a horse who does seem he may not be the star sprinter he once was.
2 Here To Shock (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a Team Hayes trained gelding that is first up, having not raced since the Canterbury Stakes when leading and giving a very strong kick from the front but just couldn’t quite get there when second to Royal Patronage. Very reliable horse that has trialled well and stable loves to target this race.
Race 9. (17:15) Sportsbet Blackbook (Bm100) 1600m
3 Munhamek (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a key chance here after racing two weeks ago at Flemington where to the eye, he was a tad on the plain side, but I am just not sure he handled the back up. The run prior here was quite good and he can bounce back.
11 Revelare (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a fascinating watch from a Cups perspective. He was a real find during the Summer/Autumn and Hickmott ended his prep on a high, not pushing hin further, with the Spring in mind. He’ll spot them a start but be strong late.
1 Golden Path (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a Price/Kent trained son of Belardo that is first up. He wasn’t too bad during the Autumn, the latest seeing him finish down the track in the Ranvet. Looks to have jumped out well and can sprint well fresh.
