A super card of racing has been put together for Mornington Cup Day on Wednesday. There are four highlight races with the obvious top one being the $300,000 Listed Centrebet Mornington Cup (2400m). Trainer Peter Moody, still on a high thanks to Black Caviar and her Orr Stakes win last Saturday, has another in form mare in the shape of Power O’Raylee, who is the $2.25 favourite. She has won her last five starts, but she won’t have it all her own way with local hope Sea Galleon the second pick in betting while Perth Cup winner Western Jewel is a chance after a very good fresh run two weeks ago.
The support card is just as good as the feature event. The two-year-olds will strive to secure a start in the Blue Diamond with a win in the $250,000 Inglis Premier (1200m). Snitzerland, trained by Gerald Ryan, is the warm $2.40 top pick. It should be noted that rider Corey Brown has come to Mornington for this ride and Our Serena in the Cup.
The Hareeba Stakes (1200m) has always been one of the best sprint races in country Victoria and a crack field of 15 has been assembled with Zedi Knight the $4 favourite. It’s hard to argue with that given he has the best form of any horse in Australia- finishing second to Black Caviar.
The final main race is the $50,000 Summer Challenge (1600m). Tenno, from the Mick Kent yard, looks well placed after winning two races from as many starts, including a very impressive display under the lights at Moonee Valley. He looks a good bet and the $2.30 appears to be generous.
Race One: Red Rooster Maiden Plate 1200m Form Guide
Back Me: Based on form, Tower Of Lonhro should just win. Only run was in the Spring when finishing third behind Decircles and Godspeed at Seymour. There isn’t much here to beat and he appears to be a nice horse with a future.
Don’t Back Me: Quack It has contested better races than this in the past, but I feel they might be a bit too nippy for him first up.
Big Danger: She’s Precious was very good in defeat at Mornington after sitting wide the whole way and just missing out. Craig Williams jumps on and she looks a major player.
Roughie: Mossman Blitz has been freshened after a couple of below par runs. If he brought his form from three starts back, then he’s a sneaky place hope.

Race Two: Musk Creek Farm Handicap 1000m Form Guide
Back Me: Thanks to the 3kg claim for Tom Sadler, Sir Fernando looks beautifully placed here. Has form around Spirited Addition, Adamantium and Platelet…that should see him win first up here.
Don’t Back Me: Lovemelongtime was very good first up at Warnambool, but it appears he’ll be forced to do a repeat of that workload and he won’t get away with it here.
Big Danger: Coodawoodashooda is the best named horse in Australian racing at the moment. He is in form and is drawn to be right in the finish. Has a 4.5kg weight pull on Lovemelongtime for a half length defeat.
Roughie: Spot On Maggie had some good form in the Spring and resumes on her home track which is a big plus. Don’t rule her out.

Race Three: Buy Property Handicap 1200m Form Guide
Back Me: It’s Crunch Time is the best bet of the day. Drops back 100m in journey, sits on the pace and just wins here.
Don’t Back Me: Barriers resumed for a new stable when first past the post at Donald but relegated on protest. His second up form is poor and looks a risk.
Big Danger: Big watch on Crafty Lady, who resumes for a new stable in the shape of Mick Price. Placed first up last campaign in a strong class five at Caloundra and the booking of Oliver is a positive lead.
Roughie: Snip Esprit did well when resuming at Seymour behind Dooen. Form from that race is suspect but at his best, he can certainly be a trifecta/first four chance.

Race Four: Orbits Fitness Handicap 1200m Form Guide
Back Me: What a hot little three-year-old race. Zuckerberg toughed it out strongly for third at Sandown behind Del Palio and with Williams on top, he’ll prove very hard to beat.
Don’t Back Me: Godspeed cost $2.2 Million…what a waste. He has some ability, but not worth that sort of cabbage. He’ll need this run. Look for him at 1600m and beyond.
Big Danger: Song Of The Bell is dying to win another race and just about gets her chance here. With a better beginning, she can sit handy and prove to be a force late in the piece.
Roughie: And Rock found the line well on Australia Day behind Lady Antebellum. Form out of that race is very good and she can be in the finish with luck.

Race Five: Nepean Waste Handicap 1000m Form Guide
Back Me: Hadronica was given a gem of a ride by Mott to win last start at Moonee Valley. Bossy is on top now, and he is getting back to his best form. Clear horse to beat for me.
Don’t Back Me: Chinchilla, potentially, is the best horse in the race, but after 11 months off, she seems a big risk against some handy sprinters.
Big Danger: Royal Bender is the class horse in the race and does race well fresh. Barrier is a little worry, but young Jake Duffy is riding very well.
Roughie: Swift Sands trialled nicely at Cranbourne in November last year and hasn’t been seen in public since. She has drawn well and has no weight.

Race Six: Inglis Premier 1200m Form Guide
Back Me: Very tough race. Just got Snitzerland on top. Fabulous debut down the straight during the Cup Carnival behind Applegate. Trialled very nicely at Rosehill last week and Gerald Ryan wouldn’t bring him all the way down to Mornington unless he thought it could win.
Don’t Back Me: No Smoken does have the form on the board behind The Travelling Man, but he was gifted the gun run. Won’t get that here I think.
Big Danger: Big fan of Road Trippin and I think there is a nice race in him. Liked his first up run behind Armed For Action. 1200m suits and the $10 is big overs.
Roughie: Forgive and forget with Magnus Reign last start. He is drawn to get a much better trip here and with luck, he can be an exotic player.

Race Seven: Bayside Jeep Hareeba Stakes 1200m Form Guide
Back Me: Zedi Knight finished second to Black Caviar last start. His form reads much better than these and if he gets across from the barrier without doing too much work, he’ll win.
Don’t Back Me: Surprised Bigelow has come up $6. Horror barrier draw here and there are a couple more who will get better runs than him.
Big Danger: Wealthy Lad is no superstar, but he keeps running honest races and is expected to do the same here. Gun barrier, gun rider, hard to beat.
Roughie: She has been off the scene for a long time, but on her day, Marveen is a quality galloper. Maybe have something each way on her due to the fact she has drawn barrier one.

Race Eight: Centrebet Mornington Cup 2400m Form Guide
Back Me: He has to give at least 5.5kg to his rivals, but gee the $17 on offer for Drunken Sailor is enticing. Didn’t mind his first up run over 1800m behind Rainbow Styling at Caulfield. Oliver takes over, stepping up to the perfect distance, and he has the class factor on his side.
Don’t Back Me: Power O’Raylee has been up for a long time, and to be honest, she hasn’t beaten much. Big rise in grade, but she does deserve a crack at this sort of race, but at $2.25? No thanks.
Big Danger: Keen to see what the local Sea Galleon does here. I’m thinking the run at Caulfield was to get the cobwebs out for the hometown cup. Expect big improvement from this bloke.
Roughie: Apres…just because Bossy is riding and it’s a staying race. Place chance for that reason alone.

Race Nine: Mitavite Summer Challenge 1600m Form Guide
Back Me: With normal luck, Tenno will just beat these. He has been brilliant in two runs this time in and should only improve on that here.
Don’t Back Me: Court Ya was disappointing last start and is second favourite? There appears to be plenty of pace here so she’ll have her work cut out.
Big Danger: Verification was given a beautiful ride by Currie to win last start. He’ll track up the favourite and attempt to out gun him.
Roughie: Sea Skye was ok when resuming behind Del Palio at Sandown. Mile suits and gets a lovely weight drop. $10 for a place is worth having a cheeky $5 on.

Race Ten: Bata Shoes Tour Of Victoria Handicap 2000m Form Guide
Back Me: Aiglon has no turn of foot and got caught in between runners last start hence having no hope. With clear galloping space, he’ll prove hard to hold out.
Don’t Back Me: Rock Of Ages is progressing nicely throuigh the grades, but the barrier is a slight worry. Happy to watch her.
Big Danger: Tanah Lot was hailed as the winner at the 100m, only to be grabbed by Placement on the line. Oliver will have him near the speed and with a more patient ride, he’ll be right in the finish.
Roughie: Streets Of Seattle is an out-and-out stayer that just keeps chipping away. Handy run at the Valley behind Sidecar and with the 4kg weight drop, he might be the knockout horse.
