15/4/2023 Horse Racing Tips and Best Bets – Sandown, The Showdown day

2 El Patroness… (Bet Now:  $SP.00) I can only assume they have eyes on the Cups in the Spring. That’s the only reason I can come up with for running in the Queen Elizabeth last Saturday. She was zero chance and ran accordingly, beating one runner home behind Dubai Honour. Prep run for this race maybe? Not sure, but off the Australian Cup run the start prior, she just wins this surely, provided last Saturday hasn’t busted her, which given the race tempo, I doubt it would have.

1 Beltoro (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is absolutely flying for Rob Hickmott and has to be rated highly. He has been up forever it seems like but continues to hold his form superbly. He won the CS Hayes Memorial at Morphettville on Adelaide Cup Day before stepping up to 2000m in the Albury Cup where he gave them a spanking, relishing the rise in distance. Off that, 2100m here is no issue and hard to knock the way he’s racing.

10 Uniquely (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is one I can entertain for exotics. She has been kept on ice, having not raced since All Star Mile Day when a solid third in The Mystic Journey behind a very impressive winner, Queen Air. She is a track/distance winner and can bob up from time to time. Can she win this? I am saying no, but from a first four perspective, she is a must include.

6 Belle Savoir (Bet Now:  $SP.00) can be a definite improver here for the Nick Ryan camp. Just a late market push against her first up in the Bendigo Bracelet suggested she may need the run and despite getting a cheap time of it near the speed, she tired late and felt the pinch behind Foxy Frida. Might need another run and has a rise in trip but she has a touch of class/quality about her.

1 Megamea (Bet Now:  $SP.00) has a good second up record and loves Sandown so she is a big improver. She resumed three weeks back down the straight at Flemington where she paraded like she would need the run and that’s how it eventuated, but she was far from disgraced in defeat behind Veranskova. Fitter and up in trip, she is certainly good enough to take this out.

4 Good And Proper (Bet Now:  $SP.00) looks to be in for a really good prep for the Matty Ellerton camp. She resumed at the midweeks over 1300m here and against the race shape, she closed off strongly from the back when second to all the way winner Circle Of Magic. Is a second up winner and up in trip, can settle closer in the run, she rates as one of the hardest to beat for me.

I think getting back up to 1200m, I want to give 6 Manhattan Thunder (Bet Now:  $SP.00) a look. He ran over 1000m at Sale last time where up/in was no disadvantage, which Squad, the winner, was, and he was much too good from the front, but I liked the way Manhattan Thunder found the line, clocking the best late splits of the meeting. Has run well at 1400m so 1200m here is fine and I think he will be stronger than most late.

5 Nanagui (Bet Now:  $SP.00) has to be given another look. Pretty good filly for Peter Moody that resumed in the Inglis Sprint down the straight at Flemington where she failed to beat a runner home, finishing tailed off last behind Benedetta. Had a jumpout last week at Pakenham and I thought moved very well so I think forget the fresh run. Off her form in the Spring, it’s clearly good enough to take this out.

4 She Dances (Bet Now:  $SP.00) will jump near the bunny and give plenty of cheek. She did that in the Sunlight Classic at Flemington and did a really good job in defeat when fourth to a potential star, What You Need. She has a very good record at 1200m and off that effort at Flemington, that is certainly good enough to take this out. Dangerous from near the front.

1 Northern Barrage (Bet Now:  $SP.00) has that sense of timing about him and he’s racing like he will eat up 2400m. I thought he was fabulous in defeat two weeks ago at Bendigo, getting a mile back against the pattern and was very good late in the piece when second to Promises Kept. He has good upside to come and Mick Kent knows what he is doing with a lightly raced stayer. Hard to beat.

4 Highland Hill (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is sneaky flying IMO for the very much in form Griffiths/De Kock camp. Caught the eye fresh over 1875m at Kyneton before going to Bendigo where he was no hope with the way the track played but you had to like the way he found the line late behind Promises Kept. He can settle much closer in the run if need be and should that eventuate, he’ll take beating.

7 Bengal Boy (Bet Now:  $SP.00) looks a horse that will be spot on for the St Leger on Anzac Day and this will tune him up for it because he does look a horse who will just eat up ground. That was the case at Ballarat last time in a 2000m maiden and he kept finding the line in a really good effort behind Moya Lass. Not sure he has the class/quality, but has upside, progression and 2400m will be no issue.

4 Toronto Terrier (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is a three year old with a good talent under the hood. He resumed with a spank job maiden win at Pakenham, which ensured he was hard in the market in the Gold Reef at The Valley and I’d be totally forgiving of the run given he was wide for the trip and that hard run just told late. He was 1200m to 1600m so with that mile run under the belt, he appeals.

1 Kings Consort (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is a quality three year old for Team Freedman that resumes. This guy hasn’t raced since the Magic Millions Guineas at the Gold Coast when back in the run and closing off with purpose late in the piece behind Fashion Legend. Loved the way he went in a recent Mornington jumpout win and first up at 1600m signals some level of intent. Hard to beat.

3 Russian Dancer (Bet Now:  $SP.00) has been up a little while but is holding his form really well. He put together a couple of sharp wins on the bounce before going to the Gold Reef at The Valley a few weeks ago where he was just off the speed and was hailed as the winner when he shoved into the clear but had no answers late for the finale produced by Bel Air. Only has to hold his form to be around the mark.

10 Bill The Boxer (Bet Now:  $SP.00) lacks the class of some of these, but he has a good racing style, he has upside and loves wet ground, so with that in mind, he’s an each way bet. He resumed two weeks ago at Bendigo over 1100m where he was kept relatively safe in betting and tried hard but condition just gave way late behind El Salto. Dean Holland jumps on, he’ll likely land on speed and run a bold race.

2 Lombardo (Bet Now:  $SP.00), if he’s going to defend his Goodwood title from last year, would want to be going close to winning this. He hasn’t set the world on fire in two runs back from a spell, the latest run being four weeks ago in the Abell on All Star Mile Day at The Valley when down the track behind She’s All Class. Has gone back to the jumpouts and looked pretty good in winning last week at Cranbourne. If he brings somewhere near his best, he is the likely winner.

7 Zorro’s Dream (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is sneaky flying for Mitch Freedman and should prove hard to beat against these. Somewhat thrown in the deep end last time in the Gold Comet at The Valley four weeks ago and I thought he closed his race off really well in defeat behind a pretty solid animal in Midwest, beaten 1.7L. Not sure he can win this, but is a definite first four threat.

11 Apache Song (Bet Now:  $SP.00) for me. She has been very good in two career outings. Should have won on debut at Ballarat but was wide no cover throughout. She then ran last Saturday in the Redoute’s Choice and was hailed as the winner, only getting run down late by a very good colt, I Am Unstoppable, who I think will measure up at Group l level in the Spring. Trusting that form and seven day back up wet track to wet track is gold.

9 Picky (Bet Now:  $SP.00) should appreciate a rise to 1200m. She was off a break when contesting the VOBIS Gold Dash at Bendigo and while she was never a threat to Shesallshenanigans, I liked the way she found the line to run second. Ran well at the trip I thought in the Blue Diamond the start prior and that form surely has to read well for a race like this. Can see her sitting back and being strong at the end.

10 Treasurway (Bet Now:  $SP.00) has done little wrong in a four start career for Jason Warren and is one of the leading contenders. She ran a few weeks ago down the straight at Flemington where she was badly held up for a fair chunk of the race before eventually getting clear and finding the line well when third to dominant winner Bossy Nic. Has that 1200m run under the belt now, which should hold her in good stead.

3 So Si Bon (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is four weeks between runs for Team Hayes since contesting the All Star Mile where he was a rank outsider but despite that massive SP of $101, he ran a beauty in defeat, closing off well without threatening behind Mr Brightside, with that form standing up in the Doncaster. Back to this level, he has to be hard to beat, and has been kept up to the mark with a jumpout last Thursday.

1 Pinstriped… (Bet Now:  $SP.00) surely this is D-Day for him? He ran last Saturday in the Victoria Handicap and did make up some ground from off the speed but was never really a threat behind Cardinal Gem. Hard fit now and getting to the mile…if he’s going to be a horse destined for better races, he has to be going to close to winning this. Contender or pretender time.

2 Chartres (Bet Now:  $SP.00) should be at peak fitness and his best is good enough to run a cheeky race at a price. He comes through the Bairnsdale Cup where he got a mile out of his ground and was never a threat but I did like the way he found the line late in the piece behind Delightful Journey. The run prior behind Seonee was a beauty so I am convinced he is racing well and is one to include in multiples.

I am with 2 Flash Feeling (Bet Now:  $SP.00). This guy resumes for John Sadler, having not raced since Pakenham Cup Day when a strong winner over 2000m where he got a suck run behind the speed and finished best in a driving go. He’s had three jumpouts to get ready for the return and the latest jumpout, he was given a really good hitout, so the grounding is there, and he strikes a winnable race.

5 El Rocko (Bet Now:  $SP.00) comes right into play if the track has juice in it. He ran three weeks back at Flemington over 1400m where he pretty much went around like it was a barrier trial, getting little luck in the straight behind Not An Option. His stats say he is a wet tracker, so if rain does arrive, he becomes a serious player, setting aside solid form lines he has as well.

4 Pascero (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is a Busuttin/Young trained four year old that resumes. He hasn’t raced since Melbourne Cup Day at Flemington over 1400m when back and making up solid headway behind Detonator Jack. He is a horse who can sprint well fresh and his recent Cranbourne jumpout work suggests he has come back in pretty good order.

NEXT BEST: Race One Number 2 El Patroness

LONG SHOT: Race Seven Number 11 Apache Song
