A strong nine race card has been assembled for Doomben this Saturday. The weather is fine, the track is soft (5) and the rail is out three metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (11:27) TAB Plate (Class 3) 1615m
It does appear that 7 Kings Full (Bet Now: $1.70) but he does have a bit on these in terms of class and that might well be enough to get the job done. He’s now with Kacy Fogden after formerly being with Mick Price, where he last ran at Sandown when a close up third to Lucabelle. Now with Fogden, loved the way he looked in leading all the way in a Beaudesert trial and he’ll take some beating.
8 Mr Monaco (Bet Now: $6.50) looks an improver here. He was seven weeks between runs when racing at the Eagle Farm midweeks last time and just looked in need of the run behind Black Wand. Does have a really good second up record and I suspect they’ll roll forward from the draw and if he can lead and get a cheap furlong, he’ll prove hard to run down.
The step up to the mile third up looks a good set up for the Stephen Lee trained 3 Polemic (Bet Now: $7.50). He ran over 1350m at Ipswich last Wednesday when back off the speed and just took a little while to wind into his work, but was good late behind Charlie Cat. He looks suited up to the 1600m and though poorly weighted, he’s a chance if he keeps naturally progressing.
Race 2. (12:02) Membership @ BRC Handicap 2020m
Weight relief and up to 2000m, looks a perfect race for the Chris Waller trained 3 Savacool (Bet Now: $2.20). On face value, I thought she was disappointing last time out at the Sunny Coast but upon reflection, the effort was good considering she had to lump 58kg on the bog track and despite being off the bit before the turn, she didn’t stop chasing. Think she’ll like the rise in trip and gets down in the weights.
2 Another Dollar (Bet Now: $2.50) isn’t far off a win for Chris Waller. Ran over 1800m in the Mumm at Eagle Farm three weeks ago where she looked home when clear, but just couldn’t quite finish it off in a tight finish, won by Duca Valentinois. Like her up to 2000m and the depth here is clearly not as strong. Looks a good race for her, but it is over a year since she has won a race.
4 Mongolian Wolf (Bet Now: $4.60) could be the fly in the ointment for the Waller stable. I reckon Kris Lees has this horse going well. Flopped out the back to near last in the run last Saturday at Randwick and liked the way he found the line late. Small field suits, Jeff Lloyd takes over, and we know Lloyd is a master in QLD when it comes to tactics and summing up a situation to perfection.
Race 3. (12:37) Brent Kielly Memorial Handicap 1200m
7 Ingear (Bet Now: $1.80) looks hard to beat. Dissident filly for Tony Gollan who debuted over 1200m at Ipswich last Wednesday and she ran like she did in the trial. Jump, run, change up speed on the turn and put them away, and she did that really impressively. Looks the likely leader here and if she can get a cheap furlong in front, I think she’ll be too sharp for them.
All you can do is win and that is what 1 Ziemba (Bet Now: $6.00) has done in two career outings. Loved the way she attacked the line to win at this track/distance on debut before going to Ipswich last Wednesday where she savaged the line from off the pace to get the win, but she only got there narrowly and the race was set up for her. Bit harder here, but hard to knock a winner.
2 Chill The Beer (Bet Now: $17.00) has been pretty good in two runs this time in for Stuart Kendrick. Did work on speed over 900m at the Gold Coast first up but was too good before going to the Sunny Coast where he was well held but far from disgraced when fourth to Raging Pole. That looks decent enough form for this and he does have hard race fitness under the belt.
Race 4. (13:12) Good Luck Jeff Lloyd Handicap (70) 1350m
I’ll take a punt on 10 Sunday Session (Bet Now: $2.80), a well bred gelding who resumes for the Toby Edmonds stable. This gelding hasn’t raced since January 30 at Ipswich over 2190m when on speed and fighting on well but no match for Ready For Danger. Been given a good break and loved the way he went about his business in a recent Deagon trial. 1350m is short of his best, but he’s above average.
12 Mr Storm (Bet Now: $5.00) is a Bevan laming trained gelding who is a few weeks between runs since racing at this track/distance where he got back in the run, probably a bit too far back, but found the line well behind Beau Arrow, who I like later in the day, so hoping that form holds up and from the inside gate, this guy should get every chance. Leading contender.
5 Galtero (Bet Now: $7.50) isn’t far off a win for Tony Gollan but the weather will be the key to how strong his winning chances are. He has found wet tracks in both runs back from a spell and for the most part has been disappointing but last start is a forgive run given he was wide throughout. Really good third up record, and though back in trip, his best is good enough to be competitive.
Race 5. (13:47) A Night In France Handicap 1350m
4 Snitch (Bet Now: $3.40) is flying for Tony Gollan and finds a very winnable race. He contested a strong edition of the Glasshouse last time out where he got a fair way back in the run and was never really a winning threat but did make ground and was good in defeat behind River Racer. Is a winner at the track/distance and back in depth, I’m keen on him running well.
12 Auerbach (Bet Now: $6.00) is second up here for Chris Waller and I reckon he’s going well. Resumed at the Gold Coast and was solid in defeat behind Musical Genius despite looking in need of the run. That was three weeks ago and a recent tick over trial at Beaudesert was very good to the eye. May want a slight drop in grade, but happy to give him a look off the trial.
11 So Far Sokool (Bet Now: $18.00) is nearly racing for her career you’d think because she’s been really plain in recent times, her latest run being her first for Kacy Fogden in the Gai Waterhouse at Ipswich when on speed and fading late. Looks to lead these for fun and if she produced anything near her best, that’s good enough to beat these, and you’ll get a decent price to find out.
Race 6. (14:22) Country Music Weekend Handicap (2MW) 1615m
Third up at the mile, I’m in the corner of 5 Le Dude (Bet Now: $12.00). He ran over 1400m at the Sunny Coast two weeks ago where he loomed large, hitting the front, but he ran out of puff late and Victory Eight dashed right away late for a dominant win. Le Dude does appear well suited up to the mile and is a winner at the track/distance, and down in the weights, I like him.
10 Char Char (Bet Now: $8.00) is an in form gelding for the Heathcoate/Anderson stable that toughed it out strongly to get the job done two back at the Sunny Coast before going to Eagle Farm over 1500m where he sat near the speed and fought on strongly but was no match late for Karakabeel. That leaves me with a doubt on him at the mile, but including him given how well he’s racing.
3 Rosie Posie (Bet Now: $9.50) is going well for Matt Kropp. Lovely ride saw her win on Ipswich Cup Day before going to the mile at the Sunny Coast where IMO she was ridden a tad too close to the speed and had nothing left for the finale, won by Red Colour. Think with a more conservative steer, she’ll be more effective and if that eventuates, she can take this out.
Race 7. (14:57) Astrojump Family Raceday Handicap (0MW) 1200m
4 Beau Arrow (Bet Now: $4.60) is a Matthew Dunn trained gelding who has been racing well this time in without a great deal of luck but the luck turned positive over this track/distance last time, finishing hard from off the pace to get the job done in good style. That was June 19 and he has been kept up to the mark with a sharp trial at Beaudesert. Looks a relatively safe option.
10 Desert Man (Bet Now: $8.00) could be dangerous here second up. He resumed over 1100m at Ipswich when wide early before pressing forward to land on speed and he just felt the pinch late when midfield behind Desert Digby. He is a two time second up winner and likes racing at Doomben. Just think he needs cover and a patient steer to show his best. Knockout chance.
5 Coral Bay (Bet Now: $14.00) is a Show A Heart gelding for Stuart Kendrick that resumes. This bloke hasn’t raced since March 9 over 1200m at Eagle Farm when taken back from the wide gate and finding the line strongly behind the then in form Capital Connection. Resumes without a trial, but can sprint well fresh and if the tempo is strong, he’ll be one of the better closers.
Race 8. (15:32) Www.brc.com.au Handicap (0MW) 1200m
If 14 Pippie (Bet Now: $2.10) is anywhere near right, game over. She’ll win. Very talented filly for Chris Meagher who hasn’t raced since the early part of the Spring last year when midfield in the Quezette at Caulfield behind Sunlight. The overall form around her reads far superior to anything engaged here and she went like an absolute bomb in a trial here on June 20. If she’s right, she wins.
10 Winter Passage (Bet Now: $7.00) looks to be going really well for Stuart Kendrick. Not much went her way first up at Ipswich before racing at the Sunny Coast where she looked to be bolting under young Murphy and presented to win the race but as soon as she was let down, the wheels started spinning. Back on firmer footing, third up, she looks really hard to beat.
I think up to 1200m will suit the Lindsay Gough trained mare 1 Oradonna (Bet Now: $20.00). Impressive winner here first up before stepping back to 1000m at Eagle Farm a few weeks ago and was tardy away, settling near last in the run before picking up nearer the inside and was good late behind Hirtshals. Back up in trip, third up, she’s one of the main contenders.
Race 9. (16:07) Happy Birthday Chris Mayne Handicap 1200m
5 Rock Beat (Bet Now: $10.00) clearly a threat for me. Tony Sears trains this three year old, who was a few weeks between runs when contesting the 1100m 3YO race at Ipswich few weeks ago where he was disinterested for the first half of the race but eventually switched on and savaged the line late to run fourth to Spirit’s Choice. Extra trip, bigger track, all points to him running well.
Looks as if the Tony Gollan stable has worked out 1 Ef Troop (Bet Now: $8.00) in that he’s a horse who seems to race best when on speed, rolling, and giving them something to chase. That was the case three weeks ago over 1200m at Ipswich and he gave a really good kick. Just found the in form Smartypy too good late. Back to Doomben, he’ll likely lead and prove hard to run down.
8 Granny Red Shoes (Bet Now: $8.00) is a very interesting runner. Talented filly for Toby Edmonds that is first up, having not raced since contesting the Magic Millions Guineas where she was outclassed but far from disgraced behind Boomsara. Has had two trials in readiness for her return, good gate, is a winner at this track and has class. Hard to beat if she’s right.
