Race 1. (11:48) Breakfast With Stars 6/6 (C6) 1200m
8 Be Water My Friend (Bet Now: $SP.00) loves racing at Doomben and I think he’s flying. Matthew Park trained gelding that resumed three weeks back over 1110m here where he was a real eye catcher. Du Plessis dragged him back to last from the wide gate and was really strong to the line without threatening behind Far Too Easy. Good second up record and up in trip, can settle closer, he’ll take beating.
5 Argyle Lane (Bet Now: $SP.00), if he brings his best, goes close to winning this race. I have no idea what to make of the first up run at the Sunny Coast. On paper, he was a moral, but he was caught wide no cover in the small field. But that aside, he was really poor, running tailed off last. Sent back to the trials and looked his old self, bolting up at Toowoomba. Go off the prior form, which is lengths ahead of these. Can easily bounce back.
3 Sir Warwick (Bet Now: $SP.00) is on the seven day back up after racing last Saturday in the ATC Trophy where he was back near last in the run and failed to make up any real headway but wasn’t too bad in defeat behind Fifteen Rounds. Will love the drop in grade/depth for this and maps to settle much closer in the run. Dangerous.
Race 2. (12:23) Stradbroke Calcutta 8/6 Plate 1350m
11 Ekaterina (Bet Now: $SP.00) is one of the hardest to beat. Rob Heathcoate trained filly that was far from disgraced two back in the Daybreak Lover behind The Vowels before going to 1300m two weeks ago at Eagle Farm and worked home with real purpose from the back when a close up third to in form filly Spirit Queen. Has a good record at Doomben and if she can settle closer, she’ll take beating.
6 Chairman (Bet Now: $SP.00) has done little wrong since joining Tony Gollan and is one of the key chances. Lot of quality about his win two back to break the maiden tag at the Sunny Coast before going to Eagle Farm where he was backed with confidence late and looked the winner but was run down late by Spirit Queen. Only has to hold his form to be around the mark.
1 Sandpaper (Bet Now: $SP.00) has a tricky gate to overcome but comes here as a last start Sydney winner so with that in mind, he has to be respected. That win came at Warwick Farm where he knuckled down strongly late and was lifted to the line under Avdulla. Nash takes over and despite the draw, his overall form reads well for this.
Race 3. (12:58) The Star (Bm80) 1350m
2 Meritable (Bet Now: $SP.00) should have these covered if he’s ready to go. Formerly with Andrew Forsman, he now finds himself with Annabel Neasham. He hasn’t raced since the 2022 Fred Best when down the track but far from disgraced behind Vilana. Two trials to get ready, the latest seeing J Mac aboard, and he sticks for the return. Maps ideally, fresh at 1350m signals some level of intent…he’s the one.
17 Argyle Pink (Bet Now: $SP.00) will jump on the bunny and give a sight. She attempted to lead throughout three weeks ago at this track/distance and she gave a really good kick under Jones but couldn’t quite finish it off when third to stablemate Tilianam. The depth here isn’t as deep IMO and with her racing style, she will give herself every chance.
7 Ocean Treaty (Bet Now: $SP.00) is an Ocean Park mare that resumes for the O’Dea/Hoysted camp. There are a couple of key Mares races over 1600m coming up so I reckon that is where she is heading. She hasn’t raced since Feb 11 when a strong winner over the mile here, beating an in form mare at the time, Lovely Esteem. Likely be spotting them a start but should be strong at the en.
Race 4. (13:33) Members' Hcp 1600m
Firmer footing and back to the mile, D-Day for 1 Sunshine Rising (Bet Now: $SP.00). He has been bursting to win a race all prep but kept finding one or two better during the Sydney Autumn, but didn’t run 2000m out on the bog in the JRA Plate. Back to the mile is a big tick, lands in a plum spot from the gate…surely this is his race.
7 Character (Bet Now: $SP.00) has been somewhat of an enigma throughout his career but he looks like he is ticking along nicely towards this. His opening two runs for the Autumn were pretty plain so the stable gave him a freshen up and ran in the Hawkesbury Cup where he was far from disgraced in defeat behind New Mandate. Has upside and his best is clearly good enough.
5 Master Jamie (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a beauty for Graeme Green that will look the winner at some stage. He ran over this track/distance three weeks back in the Tails where he attempted to lead throughout and gee he tried his guts out. Just lacked the quality to put them away, running third to Skyman. if he finds the front and gets some level of control, he’ll take running down.
Race 5. (14:08) Spirit Of Boom Classic 1200m
10 Appin Girl (Bet Now: $SP.00) got the blacktype win last time so her future post racing is known. But, she has more to offer IMO and up to 1200m should be fine. That Stakes win two weeks ago came in the Dalrello at Eagle Farm and gee there was a lot of quality about the way she put them away, gapping them late and landing big bets in the process. The way she has attacked the line in both starts/wins, 1200m is no issue, and with the runs on the board, she’ll take beating.
9 Armed Forces (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a nice colt. Chris Waller trains, who debuted at Rosehill a fortnight back on a bottomless deck and just struggled to pick his feet up in the conditions behind Dipsy Doodle. Firmer footing this time around, J Mac on, maps ideally and he trialled too good to dismiss him off one forgive run.
Hard fit and up to 1200m are two big ticks for 3 Cifrado (Bet Now: $SP.00). Resumed with a dominant win over 1100m at Ipswich before coming back to 1000m in the Dalrello a fortnight back and while he was never a threat, I really liked the way he found the line late in the piece when third to Appin Girl. He has run okay 1200m previously and hard fit now, he commands respect.
Race 6. (14:43) Chairman's Handicap 2000m
12 Yaphet (Bet Now: $SP.00) is worth an each way ticket. Cliff Brown/connections, whoever, has placed him horribly this time. They tried to get him to be a WFA horse via the Australian Cup and that didn’t work, so they went to the Mornington Cup in search of a Caulfield Cup berth and it didn’t pan out. Back to 2000m and back to a very moderate handicap, gate one…he could be The Inferno 2.0. Promises the world but delivers donuts. Last chance for me.
2 Yonkers (Bet Now: $SP.00) won this race last year and I think he’s going okay relative to last year. Far from disgraced in the Doncaster Prelude before going to the Tails Stakes three weeks ago over the mile here and was solid without being great, beaten three lengths by Skyman in a bunched finish. Much better suited at 2000m and can settle much closer in the run.
I highly doubt 5 London Banker (Bet Now: $SP.00) wins but he can pinch a first four spot. Okay return over 1350m behind Irish Songs before racing three weeks back in the Tails Stakes and was far from disgraced in defeat behind impressive winner Skyman. He is a 2000m+ horse so 2000m here is okay…not sure he can win, but for exotics, I could certainly entertain him.
Race 7. (15:22) Rough Habit Plate 2000m
2 The Vowels (Bet Now: $SP.00) is one of the better locals going around for his age and over a trip so he commands respect. His run in the QLD Guineas was very good given he was near last in the run and came widest on the turn. He was excellent to the line, finishing a close up third to Kovalica. All things being equal, not sure how he turns the tables, but runs well regardless.
5 Stroke Of Luck (Bet Now: $SP.00) shouldn’t be dismissed. John O’Shea trained gelding that has been kept on ice since the Australian Derby where he didn’t handle the back up and bog ground when down the track behind Major Beel. Gets a much better set up for this weekend and his tick over trial was a nice piece of work. Likely concedes a start but will be strong at the end.
John Sargent three year old with staying potential = respect and I doing that with 11 Xtrarevz (Bet Now: $SP.00). Didn’t beat much last time in a 2200m Class One/Maiden at Scone but the manner in which he put them away was impressive. Would have been in the mix in the SA Derby but didn’t get a run there so instead comes here. Not sure he wins, but a first four contender.
Race 8. (16:02) Doomben 10,000 1200m
Doomben and the tight track is the only thing stopping me from declaring 8 Giga Kick (Bet Now:$2.50 SPECIAL ODDS To Run Top 2!) a moral. He’s got claims to being the best horse in Australia, and hard to argue given his deeds this season, including last start when recording his maiden Group l win, bolting up in the All Aged. Zaaki franked that form last Saturday in the Hollindale so it’s all boxes ticked, bar the Doomben track first time looking at it, but he’s a pro, a star and will be launching over the top.
9 Aft Cabin (Bet Now: $SP.00) can nearly confirm his spot in The Everest with a win here. James Cummings tried to stretch him to a mile but he failed in the Randwick Guineas so the stable freshened him up and he produced an amazing performance to win the Arrowfield Sprint. Loved his trial last week at Canterbury and being trained as a sprinter, he can easily explode and make a statement.
Not penning 3 A Case Of You (Bet Now: $SP.00), an import for the Price/Kent camp. Market said he’d need the run in the Victory Stakes and while he didn’t win, I really liked the way he found the line late behind Rothfire, clocking good late splits. If he is able to settle closer in the run, he has the finale to launch late. Not sure he wins, but a first four spot.
Race 9. (16:38) Bright Shadow 1110m
3 A Very Fine Red (Bet Now: $SP.00) is bursting to win a race. Mark Newnham trained mare that is three weeks between runs since contesting the Gold Rush at Hawkesbury where she was wide throughout and near the speed but given it was just the one turn, it wasn’t a major disadvantage, and she found the line strongly to finish second to Malkovich. Hard to beat if she’s within range on the turn.
5 Hellfest (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a quality mare for James Cummings that resumes. She hasn’t raced since December 17 at Randwick when placing behind a ripping mare, I Am Me, who went on to be a Stakes winner and Group l performed. Three trials under the belt to get ready for her return and each time she has looked impressive. Good grounding for the return, she commands respect.
2 Sneaky Five (Bet Now: $SP.00) looks to be in for a good prep and will be dangerous if she is within range on the turn. She resumed several weeks ago in the Ascot Handicap where she got back to near last in the run and tried to track up nicely but just didn’t have the ping to go with the better ones but was still solid to the line behind Prince Of Boom. This is well within her reach if more initiative is shown.
