The Golden Slipper Carnival at Rosehill kicks off this Saturday where it is Coolmore Classic Day. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.

Race 1. (12:35) Catanachs (bm78) 1900m
I’ll start this preview by saying I had done these tips on a Soft 6, at best, track rating, but once again, the BOM has had a mare and we are going to be on a likely rock hard surface. Hoping we can get a decent price about 9 Crimson Ace (Bet Now: $21.00 TOP ODDS). Busuttin/Young trained mare that resumed over the mile at the Valley where she was kept very safe in betting and I thought she worked home okay late behind an in form The Regiment. The second up form is faultless…would have loved the rain to arrive, but think she’s come back well regardless.
4 Great House (Bet Now: $2.00 TOP ODDS) looks really hard to beat for the Waller camp. Excellent in defeat two weeks ago at Randwick I thought given he had to make a sustained run from the back off a moderate tempo. Was there to win, but just ran out of puff the final furlong. If he can sit closer in the run, he will prove really hard to beat.
7 Toscanini (Bet Now: $5.00 TOP ODDS) is putting his Derby cards on the table here. We saw two weeks ago Sky Lab measure up without luck against the older horses. Don’t think Toscanini is up to the level of that horse, but he’s pretty good in his own right. Strong winner over 1800m on the Kenso track last time, his first run in seven weeks. Keen to see how he goes.
Race 2. (13:10) Magic Night Stakes 1200m
Have to be with the Blue Diamond form of 2 Arcaded (Bet Now: $2.70 TOP ODDS). She was pretty plain in the race, and yes was nearer the inside, but there were better efforts in that section of the track on the day, so she was disappointing, but my rule is forgive a good horse for one poor run and I feel she is a good horse.
1 Queen Of Wizardry (Bet Now: $7.00 TOP ODDS) is an Annabel Neasham trained filly that comes here with fresh legs, having not raced since the Magic Millions where she ran a very game fourth to Shaquero, a good effort considering that was just her second career outing. Form out the race has been terrible but she has upside and closed off well in a recent trial here.
This might be too much too soon for 5 Jamaea (Bet Now: $5.00 TOP ODDS) but I reckon she has her share of talent. Just got a tad too far back in the Sweet Embrace but was more than sound in defeat I thought behind Four Moves Ahead. Not sure I could back her to win, but she’s one for multiples.
Race 3. (13:45) Pago Pago Stakes 1200m
Think you could easily make a case to say 6 Hilal (Bet Now: $4.20 TOP ODDS) should have won the Skyline. He jumped very well and could have sat on speed, but Tommy dragged back for cover and with that, O’President got a very soft lead and it was race over. Hilal was excellent in defeat and could stamp himself a Slipper contender with a win here.
The Blue Diamond form stood up in a big way last Saturday via Anamoe, who ran third. Runner up was 2 Ingratiating (Bet Now: $2.35 TOP ODDS) and it’s a near identical set up, with Rachel King on and Blinkers off. His run in the Blue Diamond was a beauty and Pike rode a 12/10 race. Just found one better. Hard to beat against these.
I am giving respect to the Chris Waller trained 7 Head Of State (Bet Now: $10.00 TOP ODDS). He ran fifth in the Golden Gift when Captivant ran fourth. Spelled and resumed at Warwick Farm where he won with a fair bit of class and authority in an impressive return. Harder here, but think he can measure up.
Race 4. (14:20) Sky High Stakes 2000m
It’s hard seeing 4 Colette (Bet Now: $1.60 TOP ODDS) getting beat. She has returned in fab order. Won the Apollo first up before a very narrow second to Verry Elleegant in the Chipping Norton in an excellent effort near the speed. Gets a rise to 2000m which should be ideal and she has change up speed whereas most of these do not.
3 The Chosen One (Bet Now: $5.50 TOP ODDS) is the only threat to my eye on current form. Quality galloper for the Baker/Forsman camp that resumed in the Group l Herbie Dyke at Te Rapa and worked home strongly late out wide to run second. Comes here with a Sydney Cup in mind and his tick over trial last week here was impressive.
This race is just about D-Day for 5 Toffee Tongue (Bet Now: $13.00 TOP ODDS) to see where she is at, whether or not she’s a contender or pretender. Didn’t think she was too bad first up in the Apollo Stakes. The Chipping Norton effort was plain I thought, but perhaps was looking for more ground, which is what she gets here, and class wise, she has plenty of it compared to most.
Race 5. (14:55) Maurice McCarten Stakes 1100m
9 Wandabaa (Bet Now: $3.70) has been somewhat underestimated throughout her career but she’s a beauty. Kris Lees trained mare that really came of age during last prep, going from a benchmark mare to a Stakes performer and with luck, she could have easily won a decent race or two. Has trialled super in readiness for her return and is unbeaten fresh.
5 California Zimbol (Bet Now: $2.40) is pretty bomb proof and I think she’ll be one of the hardest to beat here. Resumes for the Snowden camp after a three run Spring prep, which included a win during the Spring in the Alinghi before a solid fifth here on Derby Day behind Fiesta. She has trialled up very well to get ready and given her record, she’s well in at the weights.
2 Order Of Command (Bet Now: $5.00) is a key threat for me. Quality sprinter for Danny O’Brien that resumes, having not raced since the Kevin Heffernan during the Spring at Sandown when close up behind subsequent Oakleigh Plate placegetter Kemalpasa. Good fresh horse and a drop of rain will be a big tick for him.
Race 6. (15:35) Phar Lap Stakes 1500m
I’m really keen on 5 Yaletown (Bet Now: $11.00) running well at double figures. WaterBott trained three year old that resumed in the Canberra Guineas Preview. Lee Magorrian just went too slow on him and it played into the hands of the hot pot Molly Nails, who had better change up speed. Another couple of strides and Yaletown kicks back. Tim Clark on, he’ll take control from the front and I think he’s one of the better bets on the card.
9 Impecunious (Bet Now: $5.50) is my Oaks pony so I’m keen to see her step out to the mile on a big track. Luckless three weeks ago in the Angus Armanasco in a race that rated horribly for the meeting, so that is the concern, but she was first up and luckless, and really, she should have won. Only horse I want from that race and she’s got a stack of upside.
The Australian Guineas form gets a test here via 2 Embolism (Bet Now: $9.00). I’m not sure how strong it was, putting side the $301 winner Lunar Fox. But Embolism was much better after a plain resumption in the CS Hayes. He got close but just peaked on the run the final 50m. Back in trip is a query, but in the right camp.
Race 7. (16:15) Coolmore Classic 1500m
6 Icebath (Bet Now: $15.00) has been set for this race and looks primed to run well. Just needed the run fresh behind Tailleur before going to the Guy Walter where she was wide no cover but fought on pretty well in defeat, albeit comfortably held by Krone. Last time at this track/distance, beaten a lip by Colette in the Golden Eagle, which clearly reads well.
I think the underestimating of 3 Krone (Bet Now: $13.00) is over now. She’s just a really good mare, and once she finds wet ground, she probably sits behind Verry Elleegant and Colette as the best wet track mare in Australia. Got conditions to suit in the Guy Walter and she spanked them. That was her first run in several weeks, so you’d like to think there is room for improvement.
11 All Saint’s Eve (Bet Now: $12.00) looks to be ticking along beautifully for this. Talented mare that resumed against the boys in the Liverpool Cup where she was forced to make her run nearer the inside, which wasn’t the spot to be, but she found the line strongly. Ticking along beautifully I feel and 1500m against the Mares, she’ll take some beating.
Race 8. (17:00) Ajax Stakes 1500m
If 11 Criaderas (Bet Now: $2.80) wins this, he wins the Doncaster given this race carries ballot exemption for the Doncaster to the winner and also exemption for a penalty, so with 50kg in a Doncaster, he does appeal. First, he needs to win this and it will be an ask given he has such an awful racing pattern, but he has the motor of a Group l horse and confident that can eventuate here.
7 Buffalo River (Bet Now: $3.80) is a big query here as to what is left in the tank. He set a brutal speed in the Blamey and did a remarkable job to fight on like he did when third to Star Of The Seas. Hopefully that hasn’t busted him and with J Mac on, should take control and take a power of beating from the front.
Couldn’t back 10 Looks Like Elvis (Bet Now: $13.00) to win, but think he’s a must for exotics. Resumed in the Liverpool Cup and was good late I thought when a close up fourth to Think It Over. He has a good second up record and second up last prep was close up in a hot Tramway. Knockout chance.
Race 9. (17:40) Cellarbrations (bm88) 1350m
Bit of a throw at the stumps in the get out via 17 Charmmebaby (Bet Now: $31.00), who is using this as a tick over run for the Country Championships Final after securing her spot via a win at Scone, where she made an absolute mess of them, and ran sizzling time for the 1400m. Proven on wet ground, right down in the weights and Kathy O’Hara has won on her previously. Think she runs a positive race.
6 Starspangled Rodeo (Bet Now: $3.80) has now found winning form and could well hold it here. He was a dominant all the way winner here three weeks ago under a great steer from Josh Parr, who pulled their pants down. His overall time matched up well with the Hobartville, which reads well, and should lob in a gun spot once again.
Second up syndrome is a genuine query with 8 Lina’s Hero (Bet Now: $9.50), but he was quite good first up at Randwick two weeks ago I thought. First run since arriving from Hong Kong, he was flat footed when the sprint went on but picked up and he found the line strongly late in the piece. Fitter, up in trip, with upside, he appeals.
