A strong nine race card has been organised for Ascot this Saturday. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out two metres for the entire circuit.
Challenge Stakes π: View the Field and Odds for the Challenge Stakes
Race 1. (15:09) Tabtouch Westspeed Mdn 1500m
My comments on these maidens are down below…enough said there. But, on top here is 7 Lady Hatras (Bet Now:Β $5.50), who has had 25 starts without winning. Big odds when racing over 1200m here on Sunday and was really good late behind Sioux City, finishing second and producing good late splits. If she runs up to that here, she’ll take some beating.
8 Molly Magee (Bet Now:Β $3.20) is a Gary Crispin trained mare who has less convictions than most. Ran over 1200m here two weeks ago when landing on speed and she did try hard. Just couldn’t finish the race off and had to settle for a fifth. If she can run out a strong 1500m, she’ll be around the mark.
2 Midnight Hour (Bet Now:Β $4.50) rises to 1500m after racing over 1400m here in a maiden where he had the suck run behind the speed and seemed to have every chance, tiring late in a plain effort. That can be said about most of these and their last run. He has gate one and Mitch Pateman steering, so a couple of positives.
Race 2. (15:49) Amelia Park Mdn 1000m
The day WA Racing gets rid of Saturday metro maidens will be the day the world can move forward. For the sake of a tip, 4 He’s On Fire (Bet Now:Β $4.00) is on top. Debuts for the Casey team and his recent trial win at Belmont was encouraging enough to suggest a win at start one is well within reach.
2 Jono (Bet Now:Β $2.50) is the pick of the raced brigade. Son of Blackfriars for Neville Parnham that showed good promise when last in work without winning. This a very winnable maiden he finds and did trial up quite well at Belmont last week. Gets Chris Parnham steering and is one of the hardest to beat.
1 Mumstheone (Bet Now:Β $31.00) is an interesting runner. Resumed here on Sunday when really backed at odds. Got back in the run and made up minor headway without threatening. Mitch Pateman takes the ride and have to respect the strong market support he had on the weekend. Knockout hope.
Race 3. (16:29) Tabtouch Better Your Bet Plate 1100m
Leaning towards 3 He’s A Sizzler (Bet Now:Β $7.00). Son of Sizzling for Dan Morton that is on debut off the back of two trials, the latest seeing him win over 1000m at Belmont when on speed and looking to go about his business quite nicely under Brad Parnham. Chris Parnham takes over, draws well and finds a winnable race to debut a winner.
Big watch on 8 Star Soprano (Bet Now:Β $3.10), a Snippetson colt for Martin Allan having start one. Visually, it was a solid trial win from him at Belmont over 1000m when leading throughout, but on the clock, he smashed it relative to the morning, so think he has to command respect. Watch the betting.
4 Lindram Walter (Bet Now:Β $20.00) is a Team Casey trained gelding that is on debut. Has had the benefit of three barrier trials this time in to get ready for start one and has looked pretty solid each time he has stepped out. Stable can often produce a good one on debut, so one to watch for sure.
Race 4. (17:08) Crown Perth (bm72+) 1600m
1600m is as far as 2 Red Publisher (Bet Now:Β $4.20) wants it but Ashley Maley has him absolutely flying at the moment. He was 1500m back to 1400m when racing here two weeks ago and worked home strongly from off the pace when second to a very progressive animal in Last Of The Line. Harvey rides and if he can hold up from the inside gate, he’ll take some beating.
3 Jeraft (Bet Now:Β $8.00) looks to have returned in pretty good order. Resumed in the Last Of The Line race mentioned above when back off the speed and spotting those in front a decent start but loved the way he found the line late to run fourth, producing some of the best late splits of the race. Fitter and up to the mile, hard to beat.
7 Living The Dream (Bet Now:Β $4.50) is a very interesting runner. Former Lindsey Smith trained five year old that had his first run for Roy Rogers at Albany where he was a notable drifter late in betting but nobody told the horse that because he spanked them, showing his class. Keen to see how he goes.
Race 5. (17:45) Heineken 3 (rs1mw) 1800m
Now seems the right time to test 3 Big Bada Boom (Bet Now:Β $3.30) in town. Roy Rogers has a very progressive gelding on his hands here, winning four on the bounce at the provincials and each time he has been impressive. He’s hard fit and in form, so do feel he can measure up to a race like this.
1 Beat The Bro (Bet Now:Β $2.30) is on the seven day back up after racing last Saturday at Pinjarra. He got a fair way back in the run and really was never a winning threat, but did close off strongly at the end behind That’s Funny Az. Harvey sticks and draws much better this time around. Hard to beat.
9 Bombardment (Bet Now:Β $20.00) can sneak a first four spot. Was on her back last time out when she raced here, but she just didn’t handle the wet track at all so I’d forgive and forget she went around there. Can get keen in the run so 1800m is a query but her best is good enough to fill a minor spot.
Race 6. (18:20) Mrs Mac's (rs1mw) 1200m
12 Amelia’s Contraire (Bet Now:Β $5.00) has had two runs at 1000m this time in and is now racing as if 1200m will suit her. The latest run came here two weeks ago and did make up ground, but was never really a winning threat behind Time To Sizzle. Paul Harvey sticks and if the good gate is used, she’ll take some beating.
Third up from a spell and up in trip, I’m in the corner of 4 Lipstick Flickers (Bet Now:Β $5.50). Todd Harvey trained mare that was 1200m back to 1000m when racing at Ascot two weeks ago and she was an eye catcher from off the pace behind Time To Sizzle. Now back up in trip, she’s very likeable.
1 Sir Mambo (Bet Now:Β $14.00) has a good second up record and can easily bounce back here. Resumed over 1100m here three weeks back when keen in the run just off the speed and tried hard, but couldn’t quite finish it off when fourth to Universal Pleasure. Goes much better second up. Just needs luck from the draw.
Race 7. (18:55) Cyril Flower Stakes 1200m
With due respect, this is a very ordinary Stakes race. But, I do feel that class will come to the fore here and 7 Yeah Dardy (Bet Now:Β $11.00) does have that being a proven Stakes performer. Resumes after a solid Winter/Spring prep, which saw her place in a couple of Stakes races behind some quality animals. Trialled up sharp and tends to race best fresh.
1 Carocapo (Bet Now:Β $2.60) will put himself on speed and give his all. That was the case two weeks ago in the Scenic Blast and tried hard. Just couldn’t quite finish it off when a close up fourth to Samizdat. The depth here is nowhere near as strong and if he does get to the front and get control, he’ll take some running down.
The class runner of the race is clearly 2 Platoon (Bet Now:Β $6.50), a quality animal for Neville Parnham who hasn’t raced since the Perth Cup when a solid fifth to stablemate Neufbosc. No public trials to get ready for his return and 1200m is short of his best, but he does have class on his side, which will carry him a long way.
Race 8. (19:35) Challenge Stakes 1500m
6 Western Empire (Bet Now:Β $2.70) does have class in his own ride and could well be like Magical Dream in being a Group l performer next season. Had to get the maiden kill out of the way and that came last start at Bunbury, sitting wide no cover but he just had too much on them. The negative for him is that the overall time was pretty plain, so on raw times, he will need to improve, but is in the right camp to do that.
3 Kissonallforcheeks (Bet Now:Β $2.60) is the only other winning hope I feel. Electric win from her two weeks ago here, sitting back in the run before peeling wider, rounding them up in a couple of strides and winning with real arrogance. If she’s within range 400m out, she could easily win with the same amount of arrogance again.
9 Brave Angel (Bet Now:Β $17.00) is a Simon Miller trained filly that resumes. Hasn’t raced since the WA Guineas during the Carnival when racing like a tired horse, finishing down the track behind Watch Me Dance. Resumes without a public trial, but can sprint well fresh and 1500m fresh tells me there is intent to run well.
Race 9. (20:15) Seppelt Wines (bm66+) 1000m
The gate makes things tricky for 5 Platinum Bullet (Bet Now:Β $6.50) but she is a beauty and will be savaging the line late off a fast speed. That’s the set up she got over 1200m here back on Perth Cup Day and finished over the top to win impressively. Market will be a guide as to where her fitness levels are at, but happy to be in her corner.
3 Plutocracy (Bet Now:Β $6.00) gets in pretty well after the claim and I think is one of the hardest to beat. Ran over this track/distance three weeks ago and finished off strongly, just missing out on picking up an in form Captain Kink. Should hold a forward spot from the gate and is one of the leading contenders.
Very interesting that 9 Pearls And Prawns (Bet Now:Β $21.00) backs up and comes back to 1000m. Ran last Saturday at Pinjarra in the Pearl Classic over 1300m and didn’t really fire a shot behind London Miss after getting a fair way back in the run. She’s better than that and her best is good enough to run well.
