An absolute ripping card of racing has been assembled for Caulfield this Saturday for Caulfield Guineas Day. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Caulfield Guineas 🏆: View the Caulfield Guineas Field
Race 1. (12:10) Inglis Debutant Stakes 1100m
6 Champagne Boom (Bet Now: $9.00 FAT ODDS) is a Spirit Of Boom filly for the Hayes/Dabernig team. Trialled up against two stablemates at Wodonga and won as if it was a track gallop. She then jumped out down the straight at Flemington and gee I liked the way she finished off late, closing off with real purpose under not much pressure. Looks talented and should run well.
4 Wedgetail (Bet Now: $8.00 FAT ODDS) is a Foxwedge colt on debut for the Tony McEvoy team. This bloke has had the one jump out, which came down the Flemington straight a couple of weeks back where he was tardy to begin and was never really in the hunt but he picked up behind the field and looked to m,ove quite nicely. Interesting to see what he does here.
1 Ancestry (Bet Now: $7.50 FAT ODDS) is a Hayes/Dabernig colt having his first start. Looked very good to my eye in a Flemington jump out last week. Regan clicked him up and there was an instant response, which is usually a good sign for a youngster. Looks to be good depth to this field off the trials, but he appears to have talent.
Race 2. (12:45) Weekend Hussler Stakes 1400m
9 Iconoclasm (Bet Now: $5.50 FAT ODDS) for me. Thought he was good fresh at the Valley behind Merriest before racing again at 1200m and perhaps finding them a bit sharp when down the track behind Land Of Plenty. Like him down in depth and up to 1400m third up, where he can really come into his own, and we know he has very good sustained speed from the front when he’s in form.
1 Comicas (Bet Now: $5.25 FAT ODDS) is the class of the field and has to be respected. Charlie Appleby trains this galloper, who had a really good prep in Dubai earlier in the year, highlighted by a win in the Group lll Borealis. Very good fresh horse and has carried 59.5kg to win a race so the 60kg impost here should be no issue.
2 Duca Valentinois (Bet Now: $9.00 FAT ODDS) is a big improver back in depth. He comes through the Epsom where I think it was just a total forgive. Got back and was never really in the hunt behind stablemate Hartnell. I reckon back to 1400m will suit this James Cummings galloper and at his best he’s certainly up to these.
Race 3. (13:20) Thoroughbred Club Stakes 1200m
1 Sunlight (Bet Now: $2.75 FAT ODDS) should be winning this. High class filly for Tony McEvoy who was run off her legs first up behind Nature Strip before going to the Quezette where she was wide no cover and was there to be beaten but she toughed it out and class got her home. At the time, most thought the form would be suspect, but the likes of Golden Halo and Thrillster have come through it with flying colours. Trial at Cranbourne on Monday was unbelievable too, winning by a space and running sub 45. She’s flying.
10 Golden Halo (Bet Now: $13.00 FAT ODDS) is an above average filly for Darren Weir who was very sharp in winning two back at Morphettville prior to racing in the Champagne at the Valley on Moir night where she was back and wide and couldn’t sustain the run behind Meryl. Like her back on a bigger track and should be better off with the 1200m run under the belt.
Interested to see what 9 Into The Abyss (Bet Now: $19.00 FAT ODDS) does here. Daughter of Foxwedge for John Thompson who comes to Melbourne first up, so there looks to be intent to run well. Won impressively on debut last time in and was solid in a couple of the Slipper lead ups. Trials leading in have been encouraging…doubt she wins but for exotics I could include.
Race 4. (13:55) Cape Grim Beef Stakes 1200m
She looks ideally placed does 2 Cool Passion (Bet Now: $10.00 FAT ODDS). Lumped 61.5kg over the 1100m here a fortnight ago and got a definite pass mark for mine behind Grey Shadow, clearly with improvement to come. Gets really good weight relief this time around, strong second up record and the extra 100m is a big tick. Very likeable.
3 Winter Bride (Bet Now: $5.50 FAT ODDS) is just a beauty for Toby Edmonds and is just so reliable. Resumed three weeks back in the How Now at this track/distance and I loved the way she attacked the line to get the win, with the good thing being she had improvement to come. Only better off here so she has to be respected.
On face value, the resumption of 9 Split Lip (Bet Now: $19.00 FAT ODDS) behind Grey Shadow was nothing flash but checking the sectionals and the replay a couple of times, considering where she was, her run was full of merit. Probably found the 1100m a bit sharp so I like her up to 1200m and two of her three career wins have come second up.
Race 5. (14:30) Schillaci Stakes 1100m
Happy to put the quality sprinter 2 Voodoo Lad (Bet Now: $3.40) on top. He’s a high quality sprinter for Darren Weir who is hard fit and is in ripping form. He had no chance in the Heath last time but did a great job to get as close as he did when second to Ball Of Muscle, who obviously franked the form. Loves Caulfield, he’ll get back and have last say.
11 Missrock (Bet Now: $9.00) looks to have come back super for Robbie Laing. Fringe Group l sprinter who has been around the mark for a little while now without breaking through. Been a while since she has greeted the judge but she is a bomb fresh horse and her two trials at Cranbourne, especially the one on Monday, have been outstanding.
I want to forgive 4 Faatinah (Bet Now: $16.00) for his Moir failure. He just did far too much work in the run, chasing the brutal tempo set by Nature Strip and rightfully faded out of the finish. Don’t think the tempo will be as hot this time around and last time he was at this track/distance, he went within a length of Sheidel in the Oakleigh Plate last year.
Race 6. (15:10) Thousand Guineas 1600m
5 Smart Melody (Bet Now: $2.40) on top but do I want to dive into the odds on offer? No. She’s got these covered in terms of brilliance…can she run a strong mile? Jury was out for mine after her win in the Prelude. Admittedly she did work on speed and got the staggers late but class got her home. Deserving favourite though given how dominant she has been.
I’m terrified of 1 El Dorado Dreaming (Bet Now: $7.50). Kris Lees has this filly and I thought she was absolutely enormous first up in the Prelude, working home with real purpose late in the piece behind stablemate Smart Melody. I think she wants 2000m+, but if they do overdo it in front, this is the pony to bet on.
I could easily have something small each way on 15 Mirette (Bet Now: $26.00). Only has a Benalla maiden win next to her name, but the win was outstanding. She spanked them, ran time, and did it without really being extended by Childs. Has always shown promise and a hard mile will certainly be no issue for her. Likeable at the odds.
Race 7. (15:45) Toorak Handicap 1600m
10 Noire (Bet Now: $9.50) is very likeable here. Quality mare for Chris Waller who has been outstanding in both runs this time in. Just missed out on picking up Invincibella first up in the Sheraco before Tommy gave her a sweet steer in the Shannon and with momentum she proved too good. The mile no issue and she did beat Youngstar in the Shannon. Likeable.
I think the safe option here is 5 Land Of Plenty (Bet Now: $6.00). I thought he was enormous in the Sir Rupert Clarke. Wide all the way doing work yet still hit the front, looked the winner, but the class of Jungle Cat just got him late. Much better suited at the mile, has room to improve…hopefully that run hasn’t busted him.
14 Muraaqeb (Bet Now: $16.00) is a slight query at this level for mine but I think the Hayes/Dabernig team has him in good form. Ran in the Epsom last time where he ran a credible race I thought behind Hartnell, running a close up fifth. His best chance will probably be if he gets on speed without doing much work and from gate one that should eventuate.
Race 8. (16:35) Ladbrokes Stakes 2000m
12 Unforgotten (Bet Now: $4.60) on top for me. Chris Waller has this high class mare, who was an outstanding winner of the Chelmsford before being freshened up for the Epsom where she just didn’t have the zip in her legs but her last 2100m was outstanding, a run of a mare clearly wanting further ground, which she gets here. Keen on her.
10 D’Argento (Bet Now: $4.40) has to be respected. Chris Waller trains this four year old, who was given a 12/10 by J Mac in the Epsom and really the ride deserved the win but he was nabbed right on the peg by Hartnell. Lone start at 2000m he bolted up in the Rosehill Guineas so trip no issue and we know he has class/quality.
8 Night’s Watch (Bet Now: $10.00) looks to be ticking over beautifully for the Caulfield Cup and this should clean out the cobwebs. Got his start in the 2400m feature when winning the Naturalism, and the win even had more merit because he was found to be lame post race. From what I’ve seen, he seems to have recovered from that and appears spot on for next week.
Race 9. (17:15) Caulfield Guineas 1600m
1 The Autumn Sun (Bet Now: $1.70) just has to handle Caulfield and his class will get him home. The Golden Rose win was out of this world really. He had no right to win given where he was in the run but he just unleashed an unbelievable finale to nab stablemate Zousain right on the peg. He’ll be better suited at the mile and really, only bad luck beats him.
Absolutely filthy I didn’t have anything on 15 Oohood (Bet Now: $7.00) in the Flight. Been saying time and time again wait for 4th/5th up to see her best. Fourth up, she breaks the maiden status in the Flight Stakes, surging hard late to grab them on the line. Outside The Autumn Sun, the fillies have been clearly superior in the 3YO ranks. Oohood showed that in the Autumn. I think she’ll run well here.
5 Outrageous…(Bet Now: $31.00) I just don’t know what to do with him. I reckon he’s got the engine under the hood but he just isn’t delivering…funnily enough like his sire All Too Hard did before scoring an epic win in this race back in 2012. Outrageous comes through the Stutt Stakes where he got back from the wide gate and worked home quite well I thought, albeit the race didn’t rate high. Won’t be far away from gate one and could fill an exotic spot.
Race 10. (17:50) Herbert Power Stakes 2400m
I’m hoping for a strong tempo to help 2 A Prince Of Arran (Bet Now: $23.00), who is tuning up for the Melbourne Cup. He’s a quality stayer for Charlie Fellowes who comes down under with some solid form next to his name, with efforts behind Withhold, Magic Circle and Vazirabad. The first two are high up in the Cup market and Vazirabad is a high class stayer. That form is good enough for this. I just don’t want the tempo to be a crawl because I don’t think he’s got the turn of foot to match it with these.
Happy to back 9 Rising Red (Bet Now: $5.50) each way. He tried to qualify for the Caulfield Cup by winning the Naturalism last time and it almost worked, but he was pipped right on the peg by Night’s Watch. He was second up there, and that followed an excellent resumption at the Valley. He’s flying this horse and for mine I reckon he’ll run top three.
6 Lord Fandango (Bet Now: $8.00) won this race last year and I wouldn’t be surprised if he won it again. He resumed in the Benalla Cup where he was hard in the market but just got outsprinted when the leaders dashed, but once he put his mind to it, he was very good late, running a close up third to Mr Garcia. Stable is flying and the 2400m definitely helps.
