Some very promising gallopers will step out at Rosehill this Saturday on a nine race card, where the feature race is the $150,000 Listed Rosebud (1100m). The weather is fine, the track is good (3) and the rail is out three metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (11:55) TAB Highway Handicap (Class 2) 1100m
1 Lifesaver (Bet Now: $6.00) is the most interesting runner on the program. Matty Dunn trained four year old who is two for two and really has the potential to be a Stakes performer. Did win those two races to kick off his career and it was all on raw ability. Trial was very encouraging and I am keen to see what he does here.
6 Never So Sirius (Bet Now: $8.50) is a quality mare for the Matty Dunn yard who resumed with a superb win at the Gold Coast, coming from behind and attacking the line late. Was nommed/scratched a few times before going to Ballina where Lloyd remained on and she toughed it out to get the win. Looks an ideal candidate for this race.
8 Super Tonic (Bet Now: $13.00) is a Brett Bellamy trained mare who is two for two to kick off her career. The whispers around her were strong prior to the debut and she justified it with a sharp before backing it up and repeating the dose during the Coffs Cup Carnival. Hasn’t been away from home yet, which is the query, but I always respect the stable when on the road.
Race 2. (12:35) Fairfield RSL Club Handicap (80) 2000m
2 Zourkhan (Bet Now: $5.00) should be forgiven for his last start failure at this track/distance. Bowman gave him every chance in running and loomed to be the winner upon straightening, but he just lacked the turn of foot to go with them and they did run home sharply their final 600m. Forgive a horse for one poor run I say. Butter up again and see what he does.
5 King Viv (Bet Now: $12.00) is clearly knocking on the door to win a race for Kim Waugh. Looked all over a winner a fortnight back at Doomben where given every chance by Lloyd and he did hit the front for a moment but Mr Epic kicked too hard inside him. Hoping that run/trip toughens him right up for this.
9 Oakfield Monarch (Bet Now: $26.00) has been up a long time for the Kristen Buchanan yard but he is racing very well and strikes a winnable race here. He ran over 2200m at Warwick Farm last Wednesday where he was a bit one paced but stuck on well behind More Moet. Back to 2000m suits, has only 51.5kg on his back and should give a bold sight.
Race 3. (13:10) Merrylands RSL Club Premier's Cup Prelude 1800m
1 Classic Uniform (Bet Now: $11.00) is the one for me. Like most engaged here, he comes through the Winter Challenge (1500m) here two weeks ago where he did a really good job in defeat given he did all the donkey work on speed, beat most off but couldn’t hold out Shiraz, who had the suck run behind and got the split. Should go to the front here and one thing we know with him is that he is tough and will fight.
4 Liapari (Bet Now: $10.00) was hard in the market when contesting the Winter Challenge but on face value, he was most disappointing. But I think the tempo was against him, and 1600m back to 1500m was a negative factor also. Think he wants further, which he gets here, and he does have enough credits in the bank to forgive.
5 Berry Delicious (Bet Now: $13.00) is a bit of a non winner but her effort in the Winter Challenge was excellent I thought. She was one who got back near last in a slowly run contest but she clocked some of the fastest closing splits of the race and indeed day behind Shiraz. It also proved she doesn’t need a wet track. Right in this.
Race 4. (13:45) Dooleys Handicap (95) 1100m
4 Badajoz (Bet Now: $5.50) was too good for them two back at the Sunny Coast before going to the Ramornie at Grafton where he did plenty of work from the wide gate yet was still there at the thick end when a close up fifth to Calanda. Provided that hasn’t busted him, he should take some beating on class/ability, and his trial last Tuesday was quite encouraging.
3 Denmagic (Bet Now: $6.50) is a high quality mare that resumes for the Pfieffer camp. On her day, she is comfortably up to blacktyper grade, and isn’t out of place in a mares Group l, so what she does here will be interesting. She does go well fresh and her trials leading in have been outstanding. Big market/yard watch.
8 Denpurr (Bet Now: $8.50) is a Team Snowden trained mare that resumes here. Didn’t quite measure up during the Summer/Autumn but was far from disgraced. Finds a winnable race to resume in and she too has looked the part in trials, and also she is very good when produced fresh. Knockout chance.
Race 5. (14:20) St Johns Park Bowling Club Handicap (80) 1350m
8 Argent D’Or (Bet Now: $9.00) is a talented type for Joe Pride who is on the seven day back up after racing at Randwick last Saturday where he didn’t really have the smoothest of runs in transit but I thought he stuck to the task really well in defeat behind Mana. I like he is on the quick turnaround and 1350m is ideal.
7 The Pharoah (Bet Now: $3.30) is a well bred type for Gerald Ryan who has showed plenty of ability in a short space of time but he has only won the one race. Still, there were good signs in his effort here a fortnight back where he beat all bar Arbeitsam, who is flying at the moment. That’s really good form for this.
6 Dorf Star (Bet Now: $14.00) is a consistent galloper for Clarry Conners who is always around the mark and picks up prizemoney for connections. He was 1250m back to 1000m when racing at Randwick three weeks back where he got fair way off them in the run in a fast run and never really looked a winning threat but he stuck to the task quite gamely and worked home well. Looking for further and he gets it here.
Race 6. (14:55) Smithfield RSL Club Rosebud 1100m
3 Trekking (Bet Now: $4.40) for me here. He could well be the best three year old colt Godolphin has in the stable so I’ll keep the faith. I kept the faith in the Autumn with him and while he didn’t win, he didn’t let me down. Did a very good job in defeat first up in the Black Opal before striking the bog on Slipper Day. Trial leading in was outstanding and looks to have come back bigger and better than ever.
4 Siege Of Quebec (Bet Now: $3.00) is the one that is up and going and in form/fit. Waterhouse/Bott trained colt who is two for two. Started off with a strong win on the Beaumont track at Newcastle before coming here where he lowered the colours of boom colt Calculated and was impressive in doing so. He jumps, puts himself in a good spot and fights. Great qualities.
8 Lightz (Bet Now: $35.00) is a talented gelding resuming for Team Lee. He is still a maiden but he contested some really good races during the Autumn Carnival and was far from disgraced I thought. Looked sharp in a couple of trials, including one on Tuesday, and keep in he has been accepted/scratched from maidens to instead target this.
Race 7. (15:35) Canterbury Hurlstone Park RSL Club Spring Preview 1400m
7 Washington Heights (Bet Now: $2.70) on top, but only just. Had a good stint in Hong Kong before coming back to Gerald Ryan where he trialled brilliantly prior to resuming over 1200m here where he produced an explosive turn of foot from off the pace to get the win in very impressive fashion. Went back to the trials last week and went good there. Keen to see him at 1400m.
1 That’s A Good Idea (Bet Now: $13.00) is the big watch for me here. Team Snowden trained veteran who is closer to the end than the beginning but there is still some life in the old legs. Resumed in the July Sprint at Randwick and just looked in need of the run behind Boss Lane. Was down to run in the Missile but was scratched and instead trialled on Tuesday where he won and ran sharp time. Banking on him leading, on the rail, and controlling things.
3 Sarrasin (Bet Now: $5.50) is a very interesting runner for mine. High class import now with Chris Waller after formerly being with Team Freedman. He had one run for the Freedmans, which came in the Villiers where he was given a 12/10 by McEvoy but he just lacked the final killer punch at the trip behind Sense Of Occasion. Trials leading in have been okay for a horse heading towards the Metrop/Cups.
Race 8. (16:15) Clubnsw Handicap (80) 1400m
6 Faith’s Encore (Bet Now: $5.00) looks beautifully placed here by Team Snowden and looks one of the hardest to beat. Two runs back from a break have been very good, the latest resulting in a closing third over 1200m here a fortnight back behind Suspenders. Looks ready for further and she gets it here.
8 Slumber Party (Bet Now: $3.50) has to go in the numbers. Thought she did a really good job here a fortnight back in the Suspenders race mentioned above. Sat near the speed throughout under Avdulla and kicked hard all the way but Suspenders was too good. Gets a 2kg weight pull on that mare here, and maps superbly.
1 Hetty Heights (Bet Now: $12.00) comes back to her own sex after taking on the boys over 1350m here two weeks ago where she sat back before coming wide and letting down powerfully, looking the winner for a couple of strides but couldn’t deliver the killer blow. She certainly can back to this level.
Race 9. (16:55) Campbelltown Catholic Club Handicap (80) 1500m
Going to give 8 Imanui (Bet Now: $3.40) another look here. Loved his fresh run at Warwick Farm against the tempo before going to Canterbury where again the speed of the race didn’t suit but he worked home strongly late behind Special Missile. Should get a reasonable speed in front of him here, third up…it’s D-Day.
4 Special Missile (Bet Now: $3.00) is a horse low flying at the moment for the John Thompson yard. He ran over the 1550m at Canterbury last time out and was very impressive in leading all the way under Avdulla, showing a nice turn of foot on the turn and holding them safely. Imanui meets it 2.5kg better off, so holding that margin is an ask, but outside that, ticks all the boxes.
6 Nat King Cu (Bet Now: $12.00) is a former Canberra galloper seemingly loving life at the moment under Jason Coyle. Given a beaut on speed ride by Tim Clark last Wednesday over the Warwick Farm and the horse kicked hard for a well deserved triumph. Harder here, but maps beautifully and will be strong late.
