Blacktype racing returns to Belmont this Saturday where it is Belmont Newmarket Day. The weather forecast is for showers, the track is heavy (8) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (13:48) Tabtouch Maiden 1400m
10 Miss Ponderosa (Bet Now: $6.00) on top in a very thin race. Neville Parnham trained mare who comes through a similar race at this track/distance last Wednesday where she sat up near the speed and fought on very well but just lacked the killer blow behind Dark Prospect. Finds a lovely race to break the maiden tag.
2 Golgotha (Bet Now: $5.00) is a talented gelding that resumes for Lindsey Smith. This bloke ran really well during the Autumn, ending the prep in the WA Derby where he was outclassed. Resumes with no trials, and over an unsuitable trip, but I think on class/form, he’s one of the hardest to beat.
13 Sketch Line (Bet Now: $51.00) could be one to include in exotics. Her effort last Thursday at Northam was okay I thought, sitting back off them and working home okay late in the piece behind Dawn Mission. She is bred to handle a wet track despite the debut flop. Happy to include her in multiples at odds.
Race 2. (14:23) Bernard Couch Memorial Handicap (78+) 2000m
5 Ripper Rio (Bet Now: $2.80) is a bit of an unknown at the trip but he has the class on his side. He too is three weeks between runs since racing over the mile when working home gamely behind Astronomite. Racing as if the 2000m will suit, but until they have raced over the distance, we just don’t know.
7 The Forgotten One (Bet Now: $6.00) is a talented gelding who should be forgiven for his failure here two weeks ago I think given he was ridden a touch upside down. Normally he gets back off the pace but this day he was near the speed on a testing heavy track, which left him gassed behind Rosewood Hill. He can bounce back hard here with cover.
8 Thunderclap Newman (Bet Now: $9.00) is on the seven day back up after racing over the mile here last Saturday where he sat off the pace and stuck on okay behind Astronomite. He is a horse who handles a wet track and really, being by Song Of Tara, he should eat the heavy eight here. Knockout hope.
Race 3. (15:03) Bob Cramp 80th Birthday Handicap (72+) 1000m
6 Cherie Amour (Bet Now: $11.00) is a mare in ripping form at the moment for the Brown team. She ran over this track/distance three weeks back where she was given a lovely ride just off the speed by Pateman before bursting into the clear and finishing best in a driving go. Should get a similar run here and she is very genuine and reliable.
2 More Aces (Bet Now: $2.30) was hard in the market when racing at this track/distance two weeks ago but it didn’t matter to him as he led all the way and bolted up under Jason Brown. Claim for Kersley is a big tick, looks the leader and handles all conditions so he ticks a few boxes for sure.
7 Pop Hero (Bet Now: $16.00) comes through that race won by More Aces and I think just forget he ever went around. They tried to ride him on speed outside More Aces…why I do not know because the start prior he won impressively after getting cover. That is when he is at his best. Gets cover here and he can bounce back hard.
Race 4. (15:43) Seacorp Plate 1000m
4 Epic Grey (Bet Now: $4.50) is a talented gelding first up for the Lindsey Smith yard. Debuted at Ascot in the Autumn and pulled up lame when second to Rubia Miss before putting them away quite comfortably at Northam. Lark Hill trial was okay, but on his raceday efforts, he is clearly the one to beat.
14 Saturia (Bet Now: $4.80) is a War Chant filly on debut for the Paul Jordan yard. This filly has trialled twice in readiness for her first day at the races and gee she has looked the part each time, winning comfortably both occasions and running time. Keen to see how/if she measures up here in a strong race.
1 Wacked Out (Bet Now: $13.00) was a bit disappointing I thought when resuming here three weeks back and never really fired a shot behind the nippy Cognac. He is better than that and showed it at the trials on Monday when a much better second to Stocks. He can be hit and miss, but I’m prepared to give him another look.
Race 5. (16:23) David Gray's Aglink Handicap (1MW) 1600m
5 Romelo (Bet Now: $4.00) gets the nod for me here. Adam Durrant trained gelding who has been very good in two runs back from a break, the latest coming a fortnight back when closing off strongly to run second to By Decree. Should be close to peak fitness now and he loves give in the ground.
9 Bella’s Idol (Bet Now: $7.50) is a gelding in ripping form at the moment for the Pearce team and he can measure up here for sure. Ran over the track/distance last Wednesday where he tried really hard but was no match late for the finishing burst produced by Prize Catch. Should get a dream run from the gate and is a threat.
3 Veuve De Vega (Bet Now: $4.50) attempted to lead all the way over 1300m here a fortnight back and this Sean Casey trained galloper did give a solid kick but felt the pinch late behind Kensington Abbey. Got good form at the mile so the step up is ideal, maps well and is getting close to being hard fit.
Race 6. (17:03) Belmont Newmarket 1200m
2 Profit Street (Bet Now: $2.30) on top for me in a pretty solid edition of the Newmarket. He was very confidently backed when racing in the HG Bolton a fortnight back and aided by a peach from Brad Parnham, the horse reacted and bolted away. I think we now know that the 1200m is his trip, so I don’t see them turning the tables here.
3 It’s It (Bet Now: $5.00) ran third to Profit Street in the Bolton, and on face value, he was disappointing, but keep in mind he was 1000m to 1200m second up and it was on a testing track. Now that he has the hard run at the trip under the belt, he should be better off, maps well and should take some beating.
5 Just Magical (Bet Now: $17.00) gets one more chance for here. He ran over 1400m here last Saturday and to the eye was a bit disappointing when three lengths off Falcon Crest. 1400m-1200m suits, gear tinkering, and he loves a wet track. Rises sharply in grade, but a win wouldn’t surprise at all.
Race 7. (17:40) Amelia Park Lodge Handicap (1MW) 1200m
6 Get Over It (Bet Now: $2.05) had really confident market support when racing at this track/distance a fortnight back and he justified that support with a ripping effort, but he bumped into a potential blacktype performer in Royal Command. Young Gina looks blacktype class also, but Get Over It does have the fitness edge.
8 Bonny Be Good (Bet Now: $3.10) is a smart mare that resumes for the Team Williams yard. She ran three times during the Spring and ran a couple of ripping races, including a win over Royal Missile. Trialled up brlliantly a couple of weeks, she handles a wet track…yep, she’s ready to go.
5 General Husson (Bet Now: $7.00) also comes through the Royal Command race and I thought his effort fresh sound. Just lacked match fitness to the eye and no doubt he would improve off it. Suspect he might need one or two more to be at peak fitness, but he has the talent to carry him towards a win.
Race 8. (18:15) Eo Norton Memorial Handicap (66+) 1400m
9 Gunnago (Bet Now: $2.80) is a highly promising galloper for the Pateman yard who is building an impressive record and is getting some pretty high wraps. He gave them a spanking over 1200m here a fortnight back, leading most of the way under Mitch Pateman and showing an explosive turn of foot. 1400m looks no issue and for mine he is a standout.
8 By Decree (Bet Now: $6.00) is a mare in ripping form at the moment for the Mcaullife team who has won back-to-back races, the latest coming over the mile here two weeks back on the bog track when slogging it out brilliantly under Autier and gee she was strong to the line so back to 1400m is no harm and she should be included for sure.
11 Slick Talker (Bet Now: $71.00) is a David Harrison trained gelding who got a pass mark for mine when resuming over 1200m here two weeks back, sitting off the pace and whacking away okay late behind Royal Command. Ran okay against a slow tempo second up last time in and there does look to be a bit of speed engaged here.
