SA metro racing this Saturday continues at Gawler this weekend where eight races have been set down. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out a metre from the 1700m-1500m; True for the remainder.

Race 1. (15:07) Z Wines Handicap (82) 1500m

Back Me

2 Pretty Glass (Bet Now: $2.15) looks one of the better bets for the entire day across Australia. Sue Jaensch trains this quality mare, who has won her last two. First of the wins came over 1200m here when spanking them from the back before stepping up to this trip at Morphettville where she was off the map and despite the margin being narrow, the win was full of merit given it was a crawling tempo, which isn’t her go. If the tempo is more genuine this time around, she should win a bit more comfortably.

Danger

3 Table Of Wisdom (Bet Now: $3.10) has done an outstanding job since joining the Dennis O’Leary stable, winning his past two at this track/distance, the latest coming last Saturday when given a lovely ride in front from Raquel Clark and he was just too tough late. Harder here, but he’s got the right racing pattern, likely gets an uncontested lead and should give a sight.

Long Shot

4 Enki (Bet Now: $8.50) could be a sneaky blowout at odds. He hasn’t raced since Boxing Day over the mile at Morphettville where he was wide no cover for the trip yet fought on really well only to get the staggers very late behind stablemate Chapel City in what looked a strong race. He’s hard to catch, but he likes Gawler and I think back in trip is a big tick for him.

Race 2. (15:42) Schild Estate Wines Handicap (82) 2100m

Back Me

He’s a bit of a lovechild of mine but I think this is a very winnable race for 6 Brosnki (Bet Now: $5.50). Attempted to lead all the way over 2000m last time at Morphettville and for mine I think Potter went too slow in front on him. He’s not the sit/sprint type. As we’ve seen since day one, he’s got no turn of foot but will keep on all day. I think with cover he’ll be better off with a bunny to chase.

Danger

Hasn’t Grant Young done a fab job with 1 Olympic Academy (Bet Now: $4.00). Seems to be racing every week but gee he’s in a purple patch at the moment. Ran over the 2000m at Morphettville a fortnight ago and was very game in defeat when beaten narrowly by the in form Aagas. Good record at Gawler and with hard fitness under the belt, I like his chances.

Long Shot

I think the weight relief will help the cause of 5 Exalted Craftsman (Bet Now: $10.00). He ran last Saturday here in a much easier race and for mine was disappointing but the winner was dominant, he had the big weight and couldn’t really let down. Seems to race better when down in the weights and his prior form at Gawler was strong. Think he has to go in multiples.

Race 3. (16:22) Akeed Mofeed @ Goldin Farms Handicap (70) 1100m

Back Me

1 No Ties (Bet Now: $2.05) is a lightly raced son of Unencumbered for Mick Huxtable who has put together a good little record. Debuted with a sharp win over 900m at Murray Bridge before placing at the same track/distance. Then stepped up to 1050m at Morphettville and was narrowly beaten by the above average Dame Of Thrones. Just has to stretch it out to 1100m to look the winner.

Danger

2 Papalet (Bet Now: $3.90) is a progressive gelding for the Jolly camp who should go close. Ran in a 1050m maiden at Morphettville on Boxing Day where he led all the way and was dominant. Tipping the form out of that to be decent enough and the run prior behind an above average type in Poet’s Landing well. Has to be respected and has been well supported in betting.

Long Shot

3 Metro Tramp (Bet Now: $7.00) is a nippy filly who should lead these up. Fell in to win the maiden over 1000m on the Parks track before being freshened up and racing over 900m at Murray Bridge on New Years Day where she went way too quick in front and was gathered in late by Jolie Rose. 1100m the obvious query. Can hold on for a place if there’s bias towards those on speed.

Race 4. (17:07) Coopers Handicap (90) 1200m

Back Me

4 Stragun (Bet Now: $2.20) had the tag as a bit of a non winner but that all changed at Morphettville on Boxing Day where he was well backed and under a lovely steer from Jamie Kah, he pounced and dashed clear late for an impressive win, albeit the race was set up for him. Don’t think they’ll go as hard this time around, and he has to back that win up, but got upside and likes racing here.

Danger

2 Tildy Lad (Bet Now: $4.40) has to be respected. He drops a fair bit in grade/depth after running at the Valley last time where he was near the speed and battled away well in defeat when fifth to Ashlor, who the start prior was a couple of lengths off them in the Group l Winterbottom, so that form just reads so well. All depends if he can get over outside the likely leader Go The Journey or will he be forced to sit three wide.

Long Shot

1 Go The Journey (Bet Now: $4.60) has been a ripper for Team Jolly for a number of seasons. He resumed in the Christmas Handicap where he was on speed and probably just copped a tad too much pressure but was far from disgraced behind Princess Of Queens. Has an outstanding record here and if he can find the front, get a cheap furlong, he’ll take some running down.

Race 5. (17:45) Jason Phillip Schell Maiden Plate 1200m

Back Me

Going to stick with 4 Bar Gem (Bet Now: $15.00). Didn’t mind him at odds when he resumed at Morphettville on Boxing Day and at the top of the straight I thought he’d be right in the finish. Just whacked away late to run third to Papalet. I’m hoping he’ll improve off that because there were no public trials prior to the resumption. Hopefully can get decent odds again.

Danger

5 Counter Drive (Bet Now: $3.70) is an eight start veteran for the Macdonald/Gluyas stable who is working up to a win. Ran on Boxing Day in a maiden at Morphettville and tried hard as he always does when second to impressive winner Southern Missile. I think 1200m sees him out but this isn’t the strongest of maidens going around for mine.

Long Shot

11 Sophina Diva (Bet Now: $9.00) is a Team Jolly trained daughter of Akeed Mofeed who was kept very safe in betting when debuting on Boxing Day in a maiden and on face value, she was just fair behind Jaamint, but she was first up, seemed a bit new and didn’t really know how to attack the line with purpose. Effort was sound though, so I think she can improve from that and figure here.

Race 6. (18:15) Dewy Station Wines Handicap (64) 1700m

Back Me

3 Comfort Man (Bet Now: $4.20) looks a nice type for Tony McEvoy. Debuted at this track/distance in what looked a thin maiden on paper but he might well prove to be a handy type given he sat back in the run before peeling clear and letting down hard in the straight to win comfortably. Bit to like about the performance. Remaining at 1700m would be my only concern.

Danger

12 String Theory (Bet Now: $3.20) is a daughter of Camelot for Tony McEvoy who debuted at the mile at Morphettville on their twilight meeting on December 14. She was relatively unwanted in betting given the trials were just fair but she put herself near the speed and when asked for the effort by Jamie Kah, gee she put them away impressively and her late splits were good. Definitely one of the hardest to beat.

Long Shot

I think the race really drops away outside the McEvoy pair. Next best would probably be 6 Cause We Can (Bet Now: $13.00). Ran over 1500m here at the twilight meeting on December 28 and led all the way under a lovely front running steer from Chris Caserta. Massive query on him at 1700m, but should land on speed and if there is any hint of on pace bias, he can run a cheeky race.

Race 7. (18:45) Kaeslar Wines Handicap (64) 1100m

Back Me

One of the more interesting runners on the program is 10 Everyday Lady (Bet Now: $3.00), a Will Clarken mare that was formerly with Steven O’Dea that makes her SA debut. Showed good promise when racing in Queensland and was a blacktype performer. Had two trials in Queensland before being sent to Clarken, where she trialled last week at Morphettville and it was okay when back and closing off. On form, she wins. Just want to see her in the yard and how the market treats her.

Danger

1 Iconic (Bet Now: $13.00) is getting on in years but he still seems to maintain a healthy zest for racing. Ran over 1000m at Port Lincoln on New Years Eve where he lumped 63kg and was very game in defeat when a narrow third to Mr Liberty. Gets some weight relief now and Emily Finnegan rides the gelding well. He doesn’t need to improve much to be hard to beat.

Long Shot

6 Septango (Bet Now: $14.00) is another interesting runner. Formerly with Kris Lees, he makes his SA debut for Darren Bonetti. To be frank, he was a cat when racing under Kris Lees. So many times he was hard in the market, looked to be the winner but failed to do it. Eventually got the win last start before being sold. No trials, but new home, new surroundings, interesting to see what he does.

Race 8. (19:20) Possum Creek Vineyard Handicap (70) 1200m

Back Me

I like the look of 4 Crown Fontein (Bet Now: $3.30) as a horse. Promising galloper for John Hickmott who has won his past two, the latest coming over 1100m at Morphettville two weeks ago where he landed some decent bets. I will say it was a bit of a nothing race given he walked them in front and turned it into a 600m dash. But he still got the job done and is on an upward spiral with improvement.

Danger

3 Danger Deal (Bet Now: $2.35) is the best horse in the race, clearly, but it all depends what’s left in the tank. Sharp winner first up over 1200m at Morphettville before racing at the same track/distance and I thought he was really poorly ridden by Raquel Clark, a rare one for her. Just sat wide on speed with the horse pulling instead of rolling forward to sit outside the leader. Cost him the win for mine and that was a hard run, so could that have busted him? Have to wait and see.

Long Shot

Overall, this is one of the easier races tat 1 Lord Topper (Bet Now: $15.00) has contested in some time. He hasn’t raced since December 1 on the Parks track when midfield behind the then in form Mr Gustavo. He does like racing on the fresh side, draws well, drops in grade and the stable finds Jamie Kah to steer. I think he’ll run well. Can he win? I’d say no, but exotics yes.
