WA racing makes a rare retro trip to Pinjarra this Saturday with a ten race card, headlined by the Mandurah Cup. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (15:43) COUNTRY COMFORT PERTH PLATE 1200m
3 Chix Chatter (Bet Now: $3.80) on top for me in the opener. Well bred gelding on debut for the in form David Harrison stable, and comes here off the back of two sharp trial wins, the latest over 950m at Lark Hill where he looked to go about his business in reasonable time for the babies. Winnable race he finds here so I’ll be in his corner.
2 Dark Assault (Bet Now: $7.50) is a Statue Of Liberty colt for Roy Rogers that interestingly resumes without a trial. He debuted at Ascot back in October when wide no cover for the trip but stuck on pretty well in defeat behind Bumper Humper. Market watch definitely given he resumes without a trial, but has gate one and stable are very astute when placing their horses.
7 Winsalot (Bet Now: $15.00) has the hard race experience on her side and that should hold her in good stead for this. Ran over 1100m at Ascot three weeks ago and worked home okay in the small field when fourth to American Choice. Like that she steps up to 1200m and the big tick is blinkers going on first time, so I think she’s a knockout chance.
Race 2. (16:23) SOUND TELEGRAPH MAIDEN 1400m
Going with 7 Mexi Cola (Bet Now: $4.50), who resumes for Lindsey Smith. This gelding had a two run prep in the Winter, both in Belmont maidens, and was quite good at each outing in races which have turned out to be strong form references with a stack of winners coming from each. Trialled well leading in, gets the soft gate and in the right yard.
Up to 1400m should suit the Brett Pope trained mare 9 I Hope You Dance (Bet Now: $3.30), who has run over 1200m here in both runs this time in. Pike was on first up and the mare just pulled her head off as a well backed favourite. Then raced again, when unwanted in betting, and ran a much better race when closing off to run second. Repeats that effort here up in trip, she can win.
You need deep pockets to keep buttering up with 1 Magic Empire (Bet Now: $4.20). He’s had 15 starts to try and get a win on the board but is yet to do it. He ran over the mile here on Boxing Day and ran well, but couldn’t quite finish the race off when second to Rapid Eye Movement. Back to 1400m I like. Just where he gets to from the draw.
Race 3. (17:05) KWIK N’ KLEEN CAR WASH HCP 1400m
3 Firesale (Bet Now: $4.00) looks one of the better bets on the card. Think Brett Pope has this gelding flying this prep. Think he was going to go close to winning first up but copped severe interference with the jockey nearly falling. Then stepped up to 1300m here and it was pretty much a barrier trial for him with no clear air at all in the straight. Gets run of the race from the barrier and senior jock takes over.
Good little test for 6 Starorio (Bet Now: $6.50) but Steve Wolfe has got this mare going really well at the moment. She is going for three on the bounce having won her past two at Albany in good style, albeit in much easier races than this, but now the Carnival is done with, I think now is a good time for her, a mare in form, to try her out in town.
1 Read The Riot Act (Bet Now: $8.50) finds a really winnable race here if he found anything near his best form. Ran at Albany on Boxing Day and didn’t really fire a shot in a disappointing performance, but he’s clearly much better than that. Question being now is he looking for the paddock, because he has been up a little while? Time will tell.
Race 4. (17:50) BOWDEN SELECT HANDICAP 1500m
Up to an ideal trip and with gate one, I’m hoping we can get decent enough odds for the Stephen Miller trained 1 No Apology (Bet Now: $4.00) . Needed the run first up behind Laverrod before stepping up to 1400m where he was back from the wide gate and couldn’t get involved. Now has gate one, and has used inside gates to advantage in the past. If he’s double figures and better, happy to back each way.
2 Call Again (Bet Now: $7.00) is a son of War Chant who is racing quite well at the moment with his recent form coming at this track/distance. Won the maiden here two back before bumping into a potential blacktype class horse in Tycoon Storm, running home well from off the pace. He’s going super and that Tycoon Storm clearly reads well.
4 Sauvegarde (Bet Now: $11.00) has a few things going for her and has to be respected for Martin Allan. Has won three on the bounce, the latest coming at Albany when a short priced elect and despite taking a little while to get there, she got the win. Can she stretch it to 1500m? Off last run and how she took a little while to get into her work, I’m saying yes.
Race 5. (18:30) THE SANDBAR HCP 2000m
5 Eye Art (Bet Now: $9.50) looks to have found an ideal race to bounce back into some positive form. Ran in the La Trice last Saturday at Ascot and against those really good mares, she just lacks the change up speed to go with them. Now back in overall depth and up to 2000m, a distance she has a great record at, I think she’s primed to run well.
1 Not To Be Mist (Bet Now: $1.95) looks the obvious horse to beat and appears to be ready for the mile after several impressive wins over 1400m, the latest coming a few weeks ago at Ascot under a cool, confident ride from Pike. Pike remains on for this tricky assignment and the way he’s racing, 2000m should be fine and is one of the hardest to beat.
2 Dark Musket (Bet Now: $20.00) is a grand old campaigner who is getting on in years, but at this level, he’s a sneaky first four chance. His run in the Perth Cup wasn’t too bad. Think he should have finished closer given he was blocked the final 100m, but was nowhere near threatening the winner. That form still is A1 compared to some of the form engaged here.
Race 6. (19:10) THE MANDURAH MAIL HCP 1300m
12 Put A Spell On You (Bet Now: $4.80) on top, but not really a race I want to get involved in. This filly, trained by Fred Kersley, steps up to Saturday grade after scoring an impressive win over this track/distance on Boxing Day and what I liked is that when Pike asked for the big effort, she responded and put them away. Harder here, but in the right stable, an Pike remains on.
6 Lacevinsky (Bet Now: $4.80) is a Simon Miller trained gelding is racing really well at the moment but can’t crack it for a win. Was a month between runs when racing over 1100m at Ascot two weeks ago and was solid enough in defeat, though had his chance when fourth to State Attorney. Think he’ll improve off that and like him up to 1300m, plus gets the claim for Morgan.
3 Prevailing Winds (Bet Now: $8.50) hasn’t really done a great deal since coming over from Victoria, but this would have to be one of the easiest races he has contested in some time, so an improved showing is on the cards. Ran over 1200m at Ascot last Saturday and was solid enough in defeat despite being held by Speeding Comet. Perhaps up to 1300m and backing up straight away will bring out the best?
Race 7. (19:45) SIGN STRATEGY HCP 1300m
Happy to just watch this race, but on top is 10 Serenity Bay (Bet Now: $3.30) for Team Williams. Progressive mare who is first up after what was a really solid opening prep to her career back in the Winter. 1300m is short of her best, but has enormous upside compared to most and liked the way she closed off in a recent Lark Hill trial. She’s on top, but happy to watch.
3 Horizon (Bet Now: $5.00) is a Greg Carige trained gelding who is three weeks between runs since sprouting wings late to win impressively over 1200m at Ascot, getting the win over Prevailing Winds, which to be fair isn’t the strongest task in racing, so the strength of that form I’m not 100% sure about, but the win visually was very good and has scope.
Up in trip should suit the Ashley Maley trained 7 Sky Atlas (Bet Now: $26.00), who resumed over 1100m at Geraldton and just lacked the speed in the legs to go with them when the sprint went on but stayed on and was pretty good in defeat. The gate does make things tricky, but stable is flying at the moment and if he can get three wide cover, could be dangerous at odds.
Race 8. (20:20) MANDURAH CUP 1400m
The magic hands of Peter Hall nearly got the win with 8 Lordhelpmerun (Bet Now: $6.00) two weeks ago and I think this Saturday they can get the win in the feature. This horse had really gone off the boil so Peter Hall jumped on, the horse relaxed and with clear air, I think he wins when fourth to Midnight Sky. Like him back to 1400m, sits off a good speed and will be strong at the end.
11 Midnight Sky (Bet Now: $5.00) is a little query back to 1400m but I think Adam Durrant has this mare going super. Was bursting to win a race and it finally came two weeks ago at Ascot under a lovely ride from Pike. Made the right call to scratch last Saturday from the La Trice in preference for this and with the good speed on in front, she’ll be charging late.
3 Wrinkly (Bet Now: $7.50) was an impressive winner of this race last year and the set up is there for him to repeat the dose. Ran over 1200m at Ascot two weeks ago where he took cover in the run and battled away well behind Carocapo. 1400m is his go in life and does race best when leading and rolling, which is what should eventuate here.
Race 9. (20:55) HYGAIN HANDICAP 1200m
3 Danny George (Bet Now: $5.50) is an absolute bomb fresh horse and confident he runs well here first up for Brett Pope. Hasn’t raced since September 14 at Belmont when probably at the end of his prep and a tired horse behind Stageman, who of course measured up in the big sprints during the Carnival, so that form reads well, and his recent trial was outstanding. If this was 1000m, no betting. Hopefully has the fitness in the legs for 1200m.
4 Flower Of War (Bet Now: $4.20) has work to do from the wide gate but this Simon Miller trained mare does ooze quality and that will carry her a long way towards victory here. That class and quality saw her win first up here and that’s all it was. She was out of tickets 100m to go but got the bob in to win. Has the speed to overcome the draw and is fitter.
1 Bryan (Bet Now: $35.00) is a very interesting runner. Former Jarrod McLean runner that is making his WA debut for the Brad Graham team. He hasn’t raced since September 13 at Swan Hill when down the track behind a proven city performer Blue Tycoon. Two trials leading into his return, has gate one and on his day does have class.
Race 10. (21:30) AGIC MILLIONS WA HCP 1600m
12 Playing Marika (Bet Now: $5.00) hasn’t had much luck at her past couple but I’m hoping she gets the rub of the green in the get out. Has been badly held up at vital times at her past couple before eventually getting clear and working home strongly to finish runner up to Patristic. Gets a soft gate and up to 1600m looks a big tick for this mare with Turner remaining on.
4 Misty Lad (Bet Now: $15.00) is a David Harrison trained galloper that is less than two weeks between runs but has been gelded since last start, which saw him lead at Bunbury over 1400m and stick on well in defeat behind an in form Roadrager. He does race best when getting cover and having last say, and from the gate, Harvey will have that option and plenty more.
Think up to 1600m will suit the four year old 10 Wild Fusion (Bet Now: $19.00) , who ran over 1400m at Ascot three weeks ago and just didn’t get the chance to build the revs when he wanted to and was outsprinted in the run to the line when clear. Gate one could be a blessing…or it could be a nightmare, depending on when he can get clear.
