Group l racing in Sydney for the new season kicks off on Saturday with the $1 Million Golden Rose (1400m) highlighting a great afternoon of racing at Rosehill Gardens. The weather is overcast, the track is soft (5) and the rail is out two metres for the entire circuit.

Race One (12:10) : Pockit Block-It Handicap (78) 1500m:
Back Me: 1 Labdien (Bet Now: $4.60) ran here a fortnight back in what looked a hot race where she got back and couldn’t really pick up behind tearaway/impressive winner Chetwood. Back to her own sex now and up in trip are the two big ticks.
Big Danger: 7 Longkissgoodnight (Bet Now: $3.60) comes to NSW after racing down south for Team Hawkes. Her last effort came last Wednesday at Sandown where she worked home hard late to just miss out on picking up Wutai Mountain, who is probably a several lengths inferior horse to stablemate Labdien. But we know the success the stable has when they switch from state-to-state.
Roughie: 8 Taste Of Money (Bet Now: $15.00) is the watch horse. This Greg Bennett trained mare produced a brilliant finishing burst from near last to win last time out which followed a luckless outing. Rises big time in depth, but she has a finish on her and shouldn’t be underestimated.
Race Two (12:45) : Schweppes Handicap (78) 1800m:
Back Me: 5 Antonio Giuseppe (Bet Now: $2.00) ran over 1500m here a fortnight back where the punters latched onto him and they got it spot on, courtesy of a brilliant steer from Avdulla, who is the best in Australia right now in lifting a horse over the line. The horse himself has plenty of room for improvement and he seems as though he’ll eat up the 1800m here.
Big Danger: 4 Salthouse (Bet Now: $7.00) is a Godolphin import who made his Australian debut at Rosehill four weeks back and was an eye catcher late when making ground behind We’re Sure. He should take enormous benefit from that outing and looms as a major player.
Roughie: 9 Bring Luck (Bet Now: $17.00) is a knockout chance here at odds. He ran well behind Dubaiinstyle over the mile at Randwick before going to Gosford where he worked home strongly to finish a close up third to Rock Mylady. He’ll love the step up to 1800m and if this was run on a heavy 10, I’d have him clearly on top.
Race Three (13:20) : #theraces Handicap (85) 1200m:
Back Me: This could almost be the race of the day, and I am sure it will be a hot form race. All you can do is win and that is what 4 Bullrush (Bet Now: $4.00) has done, winning five of five. The last win came in May at Randwick where he led and showed tremendous fight to win. If there is a knock, it is that the form out of that win didn’t really stand up during the Winter outside Got Unders, but his trials have been outstanding and all you can do is win.
Big Danger: 1 Sir Bacchus (Bet Now: $2.40) is a potential risk for mine given he has to lump the 61.5kg, but gee there was alot to like about his first up win here a fortnight back where he chased hard to wear down Stakes performer Snoopy. Record of topweights carrying the entire 61.5kg is ordinary, but he has class.
Roughie: 3 Caped Crusader (Bet Now: $9.00) is a little bulldog who is first up for Waterhouse/Bott. Only had three runs last time in but wasn’t quite as dynamic as he was the prep before, but one thing that can be noted with him is that he does tend to race better during the warmer months, and that has been evident by his recent trials. He will run a beaut race first up and will give a great sight.
Race Four (13:55) : TAB Highway Handicap (Class 3) 1200m:
Back Me: Most of these come through the Moss My Name highway here a fortnight back and I thought the run to follow was clearly 1 Ocean Grand, (Bet Now: $8.50) who quite frankly is better than Highway class. He was luckless in that race and would have strongly challenged the winner. Give him better luck here and he will take some beating.
Big Danger: 5 Moss My Name (Bet Now: $9.50) landed some really good bets in winning that race. She opened $51 with some bookmakers and ended up starting around $6 and thanks to a lovely on speed steer from Deanne Panya, she got the job done. Harder to repeat here second up, but she is very handy when right.
Roughie: Really keen to see how 8 Diversifier (Bet Now: $17.00) steps up here. Was okay fresh at Coffs Harbour before having a near two month break and winning impressively at Murwillumbah. Was nommed for an easier race but instead runs here, which is a good sign, she draws okay and is well weighted after the claim.
Race Five (14:35) : Kingston Town Stakes 2000m:
Back Me: Going with the old boy 1 Junoob (Bet Now: $8.00). I didn’t mind his last start effort in the Rowley Mile at Hawkesbury given he was back in a slowly run race and was forced to make a long run with the 62kg. Did a good job I thought to finish as close as he did and I think Bowman jumping on him is a good lead, especially if the track continues to dry out.
Big Danger: If you backed 3 Allergic (Bet Now: $2.70) in the Premiers Cup, it was hard to watch. He looked to be bolting in the run but McDonald just couldn’t quite get clear and he pretty much went to the lien under a hold. He has a fab record at 2000m, and he should be at peak fitness now. Rates highly.
Roughie: 2 Sir John Hawkwood (Bet Now: $5.00) is now with John Thompson after formerly being David Vandyke and he is a very capable stayer at this level. He had a really good Autumn/Winter, with a string of placings, including a second to recent Dato Tan Chin Nam runner up Real Love in the JRA Cup. His trials leading in, including the one on Monday behind stablemate First Seal, was encouraging, and he does run well fresh.
Race Six (15:10) : De Bortoli Wines Golden Rose 1400m:
Back Me: The more I look at this race, the more I am growing in confidence about 12 Yankee Rose (Bet Now: $6.00). On exposed form, she is the best horse in the race by many, many lengths. Pilot error re whip use cost her the Slipper win, before she spanked them in the Sires and would have spanked them in the Champagne had she run. With luck here and there, she would have won the triple crown and she’d be a clear favourite here. Instead, you’re getting $10 and better. Trials yes have been poor, but her work last weekend with the blinkers was much better and Purton jumps back on. She ticks the boxes for me. Nothing against Omei Sword, she’s high class herself, but I think this has been more of an afterthought rather than a specific target.
Big Danger: 7 Impending (Bet Now: $11.00) looks a major, major threat. Had been trialling like Black Caviar prior to resuming in the Run To The Rose (1200m) where he didn’t have a great deal of luck behind Astern, not getting clear air in the straight and not getting a chance to build up any kind of momentum. He’ll get a suck run here from the ideal gate, and if he is clear at the right time, he’ll give this an almighty shake.
Roughie: 5 Nikitas (Bet Now: $51.00) had his first run for Chris Waller in the Run To The Rose (1200m) and I thought his effort was full of merit considering he was wide no cover for the entire trip yet stuck on really well. He is drawn a touch awkwardly again, but he’ll love the rise in trip and for mine is a definite inclusion in exotics. Would surprise me if he won, but a top three spot is certainly not out of the equation.
Race Seven (15:50) : Task Retail Theo Marks Stakes 1300m:
Back Me: 9 Southern Legend (Bet Now: $2.50) was very confidently backed when resuming at Randwick three weeks back and despite lumping a good horses weight, he is a good horse himself and lifted late to grab Haptic right on the peg. He has plenty of upside left in him and is just so well in at the weights.
Big Danger: 5 Counterattack (Bet Now: $4.00) looks the weighted runner here. He comes here off the back of a pretty solid Carnival up north where he was a dominant winner of the Fred Best Classic before a solid midfield finish in what has turned out to be a hot form race, the Stradbroke. Trials leading in have been outstanding, and he is beautifully placed with only 55.5kg on his back.
Roughie: 2 Messene (Bet Now: $18.00) resumed in the Show County and I thought his effort was very good behind Tycoon Tara given he was tardy away and the race wasn’t really set up for those at the back. I am sure he’ll sit closer here if he jumps cleanly and there doesn’t appear to be much early pace engaged.
Race Eight (16:30) : Irresistible Pools Sheraco Stakes 1200m:
Back Me: Really interested to see how 11 Denmagic (Bet Now: $12.00) measures up here. She was the tease of the Autumn/Winter, continually running really good races in Stakes grade without cracking it for a win. First time against the seasoned campaigners, but gee I loved her trial here last week behind Group l sprinter Our Boy Malachi. She could not have gone better I think and she’ll go close here if she is in that frame of mind.
Big Danger: 10 Dixie Blossoms (Bet Now: $6.00) resumed in the Toy Show and chased hard throughout but couldn’t quite lunge in time and had to settle for a close up second to the well performed Pearls. She should take enormous benefit from that outing and keep in mind, second up last time in she beat a subsequent Group winner in Tsaritsa, who ran well without luck last Saturday.
Roughie: Big watch on 9 Fine Mist (Bet Now: $19.00). Only had three runs during the Winter, and off the back of an encouraging fresh run, she looked set to win, but she was a flop at Doomben before being outclassed in the June Stakes behind Danish Twist. Her trial here last week was very good I thought and that’s what you wanted to see from a mare who we know can give them a serious look at this level. Market watch for sure.
Race Nine (17:10) : Rosehill Bowling Club Handicap (78) 1400m:
Back Me: 4 Invinzabeel (Bet Now: $8.50) is a gelding that can be quite hard to trust, but I think he could run well here fresh. Didn’t really set the world on fire last prep, though he was luckless at Canterbury behind Duca Valentinois. The trials leading in have been very good I though. Can sprint well fresh and is a definite market watch.
Roughie: 11 Balmain Boy (Bet Now: $9.00) is the very interesting runner engaged here. He was tested at the highest level during the Autumn Carnival and couldn’t quite measure up but was far from disgraced. Went well in the first trial but was okay/fair in the second trial, though it was run in fast time. He’ll be forward enough to sprint well fresh and the quality is definitely there.
Big Danger: 3 Moher (Bet Now: $10.00) is a talented type that resumes for John O’Shea. He hasn’t raced since bolting up over 1500m here back in May, aided by a great front running ride from Andrew Adkins, who retains the ride. Looked sharp in a recent trial win and appears forward enough to run well fresh.
