Sandown Hillside will play host to an eight race card on Wednesday. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out six metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (15:40) Ladbrokes Mdn Plate 1300m
Despite being first up, I do feel that 3 Captain Stud (Bet Now:Β $2.10) is the most progressive of this lot so he does go on top. Peter Gelagotis trained three year old that had his opening career prep in the Spring and showed good promise in three runs, the last run being on Cranbourne Cup Day in a Benchmark 3YO race won by the well performed Pioneer River. I think he’s Saturday class with time, whereas this lot won’t be I don’t think.
4 D’Jumbuck (Bet Now:Β $3.50) is bursting to win a maiden but is he becoming a bit costly? He looked all over a winner when racing on the Lakeside track last time but turned it up and was beaten off by Lofty Star. Jame Kah remains on and despite drawing wide, has enough early speed to get across, sit on speed and prove hard to beat.
9 Moolah Moolah (Bet Now:Β $14.00) is a knockout chance. Was kept pretty safe at odds when debuting over 1100m at Geelong and I liked the way she kept finding the line under pressure when a close up fourth to Bailarin. How strong was that maiden? Not sure, but she looks to have good room for scope.
Race 2. (16:15) Ive Print Hcp (c1) 1400m
Like 9 Sandsation (Bet Now:Β $4.00) here for the Price/Kent team. Heavily backed when resuming at Warrnambool but I just don’t think the race shape was in her corner. Slow tempo, took forever to wind up but was solid through the line when second. Fitter, up to 1400m, sitting off a more genuine tempo, she deserves another chance.
1 Lofty Star (Bet Now:Β $5.00) looks the leader and that will be no disadvantage on this track. Resumed on the Lakeside course where he had a good battle with D’Jumbuck and to the credit of Lofty Star, he kicked clear ahead of the race fit fav and was too good. Harder here, but has to be respected.
5 Frisson (Bet Now:Β $11.00) is the map horse if gate one is used. Dominant win two back at Kilmore before going to Geelong where he was ridden a touch more cold and battled away okay without threatening. Just hope Lane is positive from the gate and if that eventuates, he’s hard to beat here.
Race 3. (16:50) Thoroughbred Club (bm64) 1500m
Contender or pretender time for 3 Irish Butterfly (Bet Now:Β $1.65). If he can’t put this field away, he’ll be warming the pine for the rest of his career. Thought he had every chance first up at Warrnambool to win before going to 1300m here when back off the speed and closing off strongly when second to Galactus, who went within a lip of winning last week, so that reads well for this.
Remaining at 1500m is the knock with 8 Kanzai (Bet Now:Β $8.50) otherwise she would be on top. It was a big win first up at the trip when last in the run before peeling wider and despite being raw and green, she let down powerfully to get up and win. Think she’ll be dangerous if she can hold up from the gate.
7 Dance Date (Bet Now:Β $10.00) back in trip I do like. They have tried to get her to be a 2000m horse but the last couple of runs, especially last start, probably indicate that the ten furlongs, at metro level, is too far, so back in trip I do like for this mare and if she has enough zip in the legs, could sneak a first four spot.
Race 4. (17:25) Clanbrooke Racing (bm64) 1800m
9 Magnossiva (Bet Now:Β $2.60) on top. Griffiths/De Kock camp trains this guy, who is on the quick back up after racing here last Wednesday when on speed and trying hard, but was clearly no match for Flandersrain, who just had too much class. Recent back up efforts have been quite strong so happy to be in his corner.
Couldn’t back him to win with my last $10 given he has burned too many holes in my pocket previously, but this is the easiest race 1 Not Mine (Bet Now:Β $5.50) has contested since arriving in Australia. His recent efforts, without winning, have been sound in much, much stronger races than this. If he hasn’t let you down before, you can back him.
Keen to see how 8 Kobe Princess (Bet Now:Β $8.50) goes. Luke Oliver trained mare that was kept pretty safe in betting first up over the mile at Moe and gee she was impressive the way she let down and put the race to bed in a couple of strides. If there is natural improvement off that, she’ll be hard to hold out I’d suggest.
Race 5. (18:00) Ladbrokes Back Yourself (bm64) 1400m
This does look a race in two IMO. I’m leaning towards 6 Ultimate Edition (Bet Now:Β $12.00), who resumes for John Ledger. They tried to get him to a Derby in the Spring, but he just went too keen on speed in the Geelong Classic, and just forget the run during Cup Week. Jumped out super, which followed a lovely trial at Tatura. If he is being trained as a miler, I think he’ll win.
Have to give enormous respect to 4 Tuvalu (Bet Now:Β $1.70). Debuted for Lindsey Smith over 1300m at Warrnambool and he won with such arrogance, leading throughout, bolting up by seven and smashing the clock. Some think that with time he will be Stakes class…have to wait and see what he does here.
2 Royal Exit (Bet Now:Β $23.00) should be suited up in trip for Matty Williams. Resumed over 1100m at Geelong where he was back off a very moderate speed before angling wider and finishing off nicely in a race where the winner ran sub 33 for the last 600m, so those behind had little chance. Fitter and up in trip, he’ll run well again.
Race 6. (18:30) Quayclean (bm70) 1600m
Going with 7 Bella Tiara (Bet Now:Β $4.80) for Matty Williams. He has done a really good job with this mare, winning two of four with two city placings as well. Last run saw her place over 1400m here when working home strongly off a moderate speed when second to Milton Park. If the tempo is more genuine, she’ll take a power of beating.
The stablemate of Bella Tiara, 3 Intellective (Bet Now:Β $4.20), is going super this time in. Won her first two runs this prep before a close up second last time out after doing work early in the run to get on speed. Loomed to finish it off but was nabbed late by Kansino. Gets a 3kg weight pull on that horse here and maps much better.
The best version of 1 Arctic Shock (Bet Now:Β $11.00) would see her spank these. Her overall efforts though this time in have been pretty plain, the latest coming over 1500m here when down the track behind King Magnus. She gets back to Mares grade and senior jock on, a bounce back could well be on the cards.
Race 7. (19:00) Mrc Members (bm64) 1300m
Throughout her career, she’s been costly, but I’m going to give 12 Night Express (Bet Now:Β $13.00) another chance. Was on her back when she resumed over 1200m seven weeks ago on the Lakeside track. Was wide no cover and just couldn’t go on behind Zoushack. Two subsequent jumpouts have been strong and draws much better this time around.
9 Irish Rockstar (Bet Now:Β $4.00) is a Lindsey Smith trained three year old was somewhat unwanted in betting when debuting over 1300m at Ararat but he found the front, got control and the change up speed was pretty impressive, leading throughout and he was dominant. Have to respect the stable.
A truly run 1300m should suit 10 Nuke (Bet Now:Β $23.00). He was one of the first off the bit when racing over 1200m at Yarra Valley, his first run for the new stable, but Callow really got stuck into him and he finished over the top for an impressive win. Think he’ll come on from that and is a knockout chance.
Race 8. (19:30) Ladbrokes Odds Boost (bm70) 1400m
I’m with 13 Moeen (Bet Now:Β $4.40) in the last but not really a race I want to get involved in. Phillip Stokes trained mare that did a pretty good job to win last time out over 1400m at Pakenham given the tempo in front was crawling so she had to sprint hard to win and did so. Now she has a win on the board, could well go on with it.
2 Write Your Name (Bet Now:Β $5.00) can mix his form but his best is clearly good enough to take this out. He ran over 1400m at Caulfield on Australia Day and chased strongly when second to impressive winner Regardsmaree, who bolted up last Saturday to tick that form off. Hard to beat, especially with the claim.
No idea what to do with 11 Rathlin (Bet Now:Β $5.50). Anything near what he produced early on as a juvenile and he would spank this lot. It’s just he hasn’t done much since, and his Spring prep was pretty plain, but last start he did pull up lame. Given a good hitout in a recent Cranbourne jumpout. Market will be the guide.
