Seven races have been set down for Ascot on Wednesday for Perth Cup Day. The weather is fine, the track is soft (5) and the rail is out six metres for the entire circuit.

Race 1. (18:37) Magic Millions Plate 1000m
It’s hard to get away from 4 Shmoov Moova (Bet Now: $SP.00) for Simon Miller. Not sure he beat a great deal when resuming in a track/distance maiden, but he made an absolute mess of them and was impressive in running good time. Harder here, but he looks destined for better races so for mine, he takes beating.
6 Promising (Bet Now: $SP.00) is on the quick back up after bolting up down the straight at Pinjarra on Boxing Day, leading on the outside fence and was trucking before being clicked up and away she went to win and win well. Good racing style and off a win, appeals.
1 Gold Flakes (Bet Now: $SP.00) is racing well for Neville Parnham. He contested the Westspeed 3YO Final when on speed and he tried hard but just couldn’t quite see it through when second to impressive winner Daytona Pete. Back to 1000m no issue, good racing style…knockout chance.
Race 2. (19:11) Schweppes Handicap (1MW) 1600m
Going to take a punt on 1 Madame Magic (Bet Now: $SP.00). She ran over 1400m here last time out where she was too bad to be true when beating one runner home, beaten seven lengths by the very much in form Papavero Princess. The query is 1600m but good lead is that D Lane is booked.
8 Antique Queen (Bet Now: $SP.00) has returned really well for Michael Grantham. She resumed at Albany where she gave them a start and a beating, and was quite impressive the way she put them away late in the piece to win and win well. Harder here, but with upside/progression, she appeals.
3 Starating (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a key threat. Did more than enough when resuming at Belmont before going to Bunbury where she got back but gave them a beating in an impressive display. Good upside/progression to come, she is a definite contender.
Race 3. (19:45) Ascend Sales Trophies Handicap (1MW) 1200m
8 Shooting Spirit (Bet Now: $SP.00) seems the straight bat play. Simon Miller trained gelding that ran over this track/distance last time out where he got back to near last in the run and while he got a fair way out of his ground, I really liked the way he found the line in defeat behind Lonsdaleite. If he can settle closer in the run, he will take holding out.
3 Lonsdaleite (Bet Now: $SP.00) has found winning form and he can certainly go on with it after a win in the race mentioned above. He gave them a start and a beating, producing a very impressive finale from off the speed to win and win well. Will need luck given his racing pattern but he commands respect.
11 Catch The Red Eye (Bet Now: $SP.00) has to be given another look for Susan Olive. Total forgive last time out I thought when wide no cover on speed and that early work just told on him late in the piece. If he gets a better run in transit, he is good enough to take this out.
Race 4. (20:18) Summer Scorcher 1000m
2 Ghost Who Walks (Bet Now: $SP.00) won this race last year and I reckon he gets a great set up here to repeat the dose and with that in mind, happy to speck him each way. He hasn’t raced since Nov 30 when back near last throughout and couldn’t really get involved when down the track behind Generosity. Tick over trial was sharp and maps to get the suck run in behind the hot speed.
6 Norich (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a fascinating watch. He bolted up two back on Winterbottom Day, and on time/ratings, he would have measured up. That ensured he was favourite last time and while he wasn’t as dynamic, he was still impressive in winning. Good test here, but confident he measures up.
4 Bopping Blue (Bet Now: $SP.00) deserves a crack. He was a strong track/distance winner last start, producing sustained speed from the outset and gave nothing else a look in to win and win well. Looks the likely leader and from there, will take running down.
Race 5. (20:52) Perth Cup 2400m
The more I look at this race, the more I think 5 Serpentine (Bet Now: $SP.00) could be a good thing. You look at his form, it just reads far superior to anything engaged here. He’ll press forward from the wide gate and does look the likely leader, and he races best when leading and doing his own thing in front. If that does eventuate, he should be a $2.50 chance. Clear standout as far as I’m concerned.
15 Sentimental Hero (Bet Now: $SP.00) is flying for Peter Fernie…just a matter of is it one too many to the well? He’s been up a long time but is seemingly holding his form very well and will love the weight relief from the ATA when an unlucky second to Diamond Scene. He has the on speed racing style, and I dare say may stalk Serpentine, so he’s dangerous.
The knockout for me is 13 Iowa (Bet Now: $SP.00). Hasn’t got the class but he is a stayer, a proper stayer, who will just keep chipping away. That was seen in the ATA when first up and he battled on really well in defeat I thought behind Diamond Scene. He will press forward and will just keep batting away at the same speed. If this becomes survival of the fittest, then he comes right into play.
Race 6. (21:24) La Trice Classic 1800m
2 Rusty Dreams (Bet Now: $SP.00) wasn’t given the best of steers in this race last year and does get D Lane on. On face value, she was plain in the Starstruck, but she was back and as mentioned, the race was run at an absolute crawl, so forgive and forget. Prior efforts were strong, so she deserves another look.
6 Miss Skyhigh (Bet Now: $SP.00) ran third in the Starstruck. She got off the speed and kept chasing off the slow tempo. Was quite good in defeat when third to Bonjoy. Racing like 1800m suits and with a more genuine tempo, she’ll be hard to hold out.
4 Amber Glide (Bet Now: $SP.00) ran fourth in the Starstruck. She had a suck run behind the speed and tried hard but with the race shape, she didn’t quite have the change up speed to go with them late in the piece. The rise in trip is a query but with a soft run in transit, she should be fine.
Race 7. (21:55) Mumm Champagne Handicap (66+) 1000m
8 Bonnie Lad (Bet Now: $SP.00) has a good second up record and I think has returned in pretty solid order. He resumed at this track/distance when held up at times after a tardy beginning and worked home well enough in defeat I thought behind Bopping Blue. If he can settle closer and be within range, he takes beating.
7 All Play (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a Trevor Andrews trained four year old that has been hit and miss throughout his career but is winning two of his past three. Latest win came over 1100m when getting the suck run in behind and finished best to win and win well. Back to 1000m no issue and maps ideally once again.
6 Under Influence (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a Team Pearce trained gelding that resumes. This guy is first up, having not raced since Oct 5 at Kalgoorlie when back, wide with cover and was never really a factor behind the Stakes performed Crippalenko. Recent trial was good and he’ll be stronger than most at the end.
