The crowning glory is there for the $1.55 Ladbrokes race favourite Spywire in being the first of the Snitzel-Redout’s Choice-Danehill sire line to claim the Magic Millions Wyong 2YO Classic.
In fact, Spywire can establish a new branch of the Snitzel- Redout’s Choice line through his Champion 3YO Colt sire Trapeze Artist, being a great- grandson of the legend Danehill, by Danzig.
And it’s not even Christmas, and Trapeze Artist is already the Leading Australian 3YO Sire and finishing in the top five as last season’s First Season Sire, having won four Group 1s at 3, 4 years.
With Spywire being a 2½ length 1000m winner at Rosehill in November, he also has Griff in winning the Caulfield Guineas, Stutt Stakes and Exford Plate, and sire of four stake’s placegetters.
In drawing the outside of the 8 runners for Tyler Schiller, it’s the $200,000 Wyong 2YO Classic RL of 1100m at Set-Weights, and lead-in to $3m The Star Gold Coast Magic Millions 2YO Classic.
Also $7 second favourite with betting sites for the $5m Longines Golden Slipper, Spywire is certainly looking to be Ciaron Maher and David Eustace’s initial race success having twice won the MM 2YO Classic.
A $520,000 buy for Maher and Eustance at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, he’s from the stakes winning Denman mare Secret Trail, family of Railway Handicap winner Gold Trail.
And it’s the 2004 Wyong 2YO Classic hero Snitzel who has the Michael Freedman trained Highness as his first Wyong 2YO Classic hope with Tommy Berry jumping from Gate 5 and paying $6.
Placed sixth in the Breeders Plate, Highness was $900,000 Gold Coast Yearling buy for James Herron Bloodstock, he’s from the Northern Meteor mare Diana’s Star, a half-sister to Dissident.
As a $260,000 Gold Coast graduate Snitzel is four times Champion Sire and triple Champion 2YO Sire had both Away Game in 2020 and Exhilarates 2019 win the Magic Millions 2YO Classic.
In maintaining his Magic Millions dominance, Danehill has sire-line descendent Sneaky Sofia at $41 for Damien Lane and jockey Reece Jones, carrying 54.6kg, against the males 56.5kg, Gate 6.
Unraced, she’s by the Coolmore Stud Stakes winner Merchant Navy, a son of Fast Rock sired by Danehill, and a $80,000 Gold Coast buy from the stakes winning Show a Heart mare Shoboard.
And there can’t be any Magic Millions Race Series without champion sire-of-sies Redout’s Choice, with his influential son Not A Single Doubt winning the first MM Wyong 2YO Classic in 2003.
Bred by Arrowfield Stud, he went onto sire 15 Group 1 winner including the 2019 Wyong Classic winner Farnan who later won the Golden Slipper and was crowned Champion 2YO of 2019-20.
A $550,000 2019 MM Gold Coast Yearling Sale buy, today Farnan stands at Kia Ora Stud in the Hunter Valley, and with first yearlings selling in 2024, his weanlings having made up to $180,000.
Soaring Ambition won in 2021 for Not A Single Doubt, and as a $270000 2021 Gold Coast Yearling Sale graduate this was her only win, selling for $660,000 at the 2023 National Broodmares.
And as the Classic’s leading sire, his $30,000 Gold Coast buy Karuta Queen won in 2010, then for $600,000 at the Strawberry Hill Sale, with her yearlings selling up to $1.5m at the Gold Coast.
Redout’s Choice next had Snitzel win Wyon Classic in 2004, going on to win the Oakleigh Plate, and at Arrowfield Stud sired 12 stakes winning sire-sons and at auction 54 million dollar yearlings.
Danehill is also the grandsire of the 2016 winner Madeenaty, by Exceed and Excell and a $775,000 Gold Coast buy, and Assail in 2012 by Charge Forward and a $40,000 Gold Coast Yearling.
