England’s best says there’s nothing like the Melbourne Cup

Racing Tv in England, since racing has stopped, has started a series of interviewing the top riders.

Asking them various questions, inviting the public to as well, you know that tytpe of thing.

Last night one of England’s best, William Buick, was the man in the chair.

After a number of standard, type questions, like, whose your favourite racehorse, what race do you want to win , whose the best horse you’ve ridden,, how’d you get into race riding, he was asked this one…

“William, when you go to various countries to ride, do you get into the culture of the place too?

“Oh it’s the fill package, isn’t it?” he said. “Absolutely I do, but when I go to Australia, that place is amazing. The buzz around the Melbourne Cup is just unbelievable.

“There are parades, there are holidays, the whole country gets behind it. The atmosphere for that one race is truly unbelievable to be a part of.”

There doesn’t seem to be anything quite like the Melbourne Cup abroad.

When asked what race he wants to win the most, just for a moment I thought he’d say the Melbourne Cup, but he propped and went to Europe for his answer.

“The Arc de Triomphe is the European Championship so I’d say that would be very high on my list to win.”

He rated Royal Ascot as his favourite track in the world and has a very healthy respect for the depth and quality of racing in both France and Ireland.

Buick, the son of a former jockey, wanted to ride from a very young age. “But it was very hard as I started riding in Norway, came to England, and just kept falling off.

“It’s a tough sport to learn but I love it and never wanted to do anything else, actually.”

Buick, who has a 16 month old at home, wants to like all European jockeys, get back to race riding, but unlike some, he’s nearly, and I say nearly, as happy to be at home spending time with his baby.

“It’s great bonding, and I’ve read my books in the last month than I have in the last few years.”
