5/8/2023 Horse Racing Tips and Best Bets – Goodwood, Langtry Stakes day

Glorious Goodwood 2023 concludes this Saturday night, headlined by the Group ll Langtry Stakes (2816m) for the Fillies & Mares.

8 Monsieur Kodi (Bet Now:  $SP.00) will do me in the opener. Son of Kodiac that ran two weeks at Yarmouth when near the speed and quite keen in the run. Loomed to win when asked for the big effort but that early burn of energy told late and he couldn’t quite finish it off when third to Dark Trooper. If he brings better racing manners, he’ll take beating.

3 Zaman Jemil (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is putting together a tidy record for the Charlton camp. Bit to like about his last start win at Thirsk. He took up a decent spot but was chasing the leaders from a fair way out but credit to him, he ran through the pain barrier and surged hard late, drawing clear for a dominant win. Gets Ryan Moore to steer so he has a bit going for him.

2 Temple Bruer (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is a bit of a query on wet ground but with his best form, he is good enough to threaten. He ran on wet ground at Ascot last time when back in the run and was never a factor when down the track behind Popmaster. If the track happened to get dry, he almost becomes top seed, but on wet ground, he is more a first four threat.

3 Euchen Glen (Bet Now:  $SP.00) saves his best for wet ground and I reckon is a big price. He ran over 3319m at Newbury last time where he was back in the run, and keen, and while he did make up some ground, he was never really a factor behind Sweet William. Back on wet ground, slightly back in trip, he’s worth a throw at the stumps.

7 Sweet William (Bet Now:  $SP.00) has done little wrong in a five start career for Team Gosden. He won the race mentioned above at Newbury and the win had plenty of merit to it. He did plenty wrong in the run and lost a plate as well but gee he was quite dominant in the run to the line. The unknown is wet ground but he could just be better than them. Watch the market.

14 He’s A Latchico (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is looking to make it three on the bounce. His latest win came at this trip at Sandown when back in the field but was clearly trucking with purpose before angling wider into clear air and he got better as the race went on for a strong win. Harder here but confident he can measure up.

Looks a two horse race but I feel there is better value around 4 River Of Stars (Bet Now:  $SP.00). Sea The Stars four year old that was a narrow second in a French Group ll last time in what looked a strong race. Start prior she won the Bronte Cup at York when on speed and she kept finding under pressure to fend them off and win. Has run well on wet ground previously and will have no issue with the trip.

1 Free Wind (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is the class of the field and class will take her a long way. She was somewhat thrown in the deep end last time in the Hardwicke at Royal Ascot and just found them a bit too sharp but for the most part, she was far from disgraced. Back to Mares grade, up in trip, class, she is clearly hard to beat.

2 Luisa Casati (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is an improver at odds. She resumed in the Lancashire Oaks at Haydock where she got back to near last in the run and did make up ground but was never really a threat. The rise in trip is interesting but she has more upside than most and does like wet tracks, so she’s in with a shout at a price.

5 Orazio (Bet Now:  $SP.00) looks the straight bat option. Charlie Hills trained four year old that has been kept on ice since contesting the Wokingham at Royal Ascot where he was quite good in defeat given he was near the stand side of the track but the main action was on the far side, so he had excuses when sixth. Prior efforts were very good so off those, he’s hard to beat against these.

8 Apollo One (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is the key threat. He comes through the Wokingham as well and he had more of a chance given he was on the far side where the action was. He was near the speed throughout and stuck to the task quite gamely in defeat when second. Good racing style…just doesn’t want the track too wet.

23 Significantly (Bet Now:  $SP.00) should appreciate a rise to 1200m. He ran over 1000m at Ascot last start where he was tardy to begin and ended up near last. He was never really a winning threat but did like the way he found the line late in the piece when second. He has a good record at 1200m and with a clean jump, he won’t be far away and can still be effective late.

1 Urban Sprawl (Bet Now:  $SP.00) has to be given another look. He was good in defeat two back in the Britannia at Royal Ascot before backing up a week later at Newmarket when an odds on pop but I don’t think he handled the back up at all, finishing tailed off last. He is a winner at Goodwood and with a few weeks to recover, I think he’s in this up to his ears.

2 Thunder Ball (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is a knockout hope. Back to 1400m is a big tick for him given he ran over the mile last time in the Britannia at Royal Ascot where the bob of the head separated he and Urban Sprawl so in that regard, the price gap between the two is a bit too big IMO and the big tick for him is back in trip because a mile sees him out. Dangerous.

8 Captain Cuddles (Bet Now:  $SP.00) doesn’t have the quality of some of these but I do think he has an engine under the hood to run a positive race. There was merit to his effort at Ascot last time given he had to drag the field up to the leader, one of the worst tasks in racing, and while he didn’t win, his run was full of merit when third. Not sure he wins, but a first four threat.

6 Individualism (Bet Now:  $SP.00) on top but not really a race I want to get involved in. This colt debuted over 1454m at Ayr where he was near the speed throughout and seemingly going well under Fanning. Clicked up and loomed but couldn’t quite finish it off and had to settle for a second to Cerulean Boy. He has the run under the belt and that race experience is invaluable.

13 Stratocracy (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is a very interesting runner. Richard Hannon trained colt that is on debut and the early markets suggest that this guy should be respected. On breeding, he is bred to be a handy one, and I think a good lead is that the stable finds Ryan Moore to steer. I think watch the market and see how he parades.

12 Royal Supremacy (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is on debut here for Andrew Balding and I think is in with a shout. He is a well bred type that is related to several winners so he has the pedigree behind to say he’ll win races. Whether it’s here on debut, not sure, but there has been early market specking, which is a positive lead.

10 Dashing Roger (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is a throw at the stumps in the get out. He drops a fair bit in grade/depth after contesting the Summer Mile at Ascot where he was too bad to be true, finishing nearly 40 lengths from the winner in a very poor effort, interestingly with nothing said in the Stewards Report. Prior effort at Chester was strong and I think getting up in trip again, he can run a much improved race.

18 One Step Beyond (Bet Now:  $SP.00) has to be respected. He was 2000m back to the mile at Ascot last time when near the speed throughout before chasing down the leaders and was actually impressive late in maintaining a margin to the line. That was an Apprentice Only race so the depth here is far greater but he gets Ryan Moore, which is a big, big tick.

5 Fantastic Fox (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is an improver at odds. He ran a month ago at Hamilton over the mile when tardy away and was forced to settle near the back. He did loom and track into the race but he had nothing left for the finale when down the track. Interesting he gets a rise in trip but likes wet ground and overall, this isn’t a strong race.
