Stallion Sejarden dies suddenly

Blue Gum Farm has announced the heartbreaking passing of young stallion Sejardan, who suffered a sudden and catastrophic injury on Tuesday. Despite urgent veterinary assistance led by Dr Angus Adkins and the team at Avenel Equine Hospital, the rising sire could not be saved.

Sejardan arrived at stud in 2023 with elite credentials and high expectations. A naturally talented juvenile trained by Gary Portelli, he was unbeaten before Christmas at two, winning both the Group 3 Breeders’ Plate and the $1 million Golden Gift. He returned the following autumn to secure the Group 2 Todman Stakes, a race long regarded as a proven pathway to stallion success.

His early brilliance left a deep impression on those closest to him. Trainer Gary Portelli spoke glowingly of the colt’s talent and temperament.

“He’s the smartest colt I have ever had anything to do with in my life as a trainer,” Portelli said.

Sejardan had only just begun his stud career, with his first crop of weanlings offered for sale this year. They were strongly received in the marketplace, selling up to $130,000 and heading to respected farms across the country. Their physical strength and athleticism suggested Sejardan was well on track to establish himself as a meaningful sire.

Blue Gum Farm said the loss is deeply felt across the operation, particularly by the staff who worked with him daily. Stallion handler Justin Telfer was among those acknowledged for forming a close bond with the horse from the moment he arrived.

The farm also extended sincere sympathies to Sejardan’s ownership and shareholders, who supported him from champion two-year-old through to his early stud career.

Blue Gum Farm also expressed gratitude to the many breeders who backed Sejardan over his first three seasons, noting that their support and belief will continue to be honoured through the horses he leaves behind.
