A colt by Extreme Choice and half-brother to Group 2 winner Prost reached $850,000 at the Magic Millions National Yearling Sale on Monday, equalling the all-time sale record.
The December 19-born colt, bred and offered by Gerry Harvey’s Baramul Stud, was secured by powerhouse buyer Yulong, tying the record set by a Dundeel colt in 2019.
This sale highlights the continuing success of Extreme Choice progeny, especially following the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes win by Devil Night, also owned by Yulong’s Zhang Yuesheng.
“He’s a magnificent colt and it’s rewarding to see the strategy of breeding mares to Extreme Choice—both to suit northern hemisphere timelines and later in the season—deliver results,” Magic Millions boss Barry Bowditch said.
Baramul Stud also produced the day’s second top lot, an Extreme Choice filly sold to Springwood for $240,000. Another filly by the stallion, foaled on February 23 and bred on a northern hemisphere calendar, went to a partnership including First Light Racing, Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott for $160,000.
Meanwhile, a Nicconi colt changed hands for $190,000 to trainer Peter Robl.
With the final session of the National Sale scheduled for Tuesday, Bowditch was upbeat, citing $5.8 million in turnover, an average of $44,961, a median of $28,000 and a clearance rate of 70 percent.
