Yes, what a racehorse, as Anamoe first took out the ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes of 1400m at two years for Godolphin having earlier won the Todman Stakes of 1200m and Merson Cooper Stakes.
First up at three it was victory in the Run to The Rose of 1200, before a head second to In The Congo in the Golden Rose Stakes and then taking out the Caulfield Guineas of 1600 from Captivant.
Next, in a most memorable performance Anamoe went down by a nose the Saratoga Derby winner State of Rest in the $5m WS Cox Plate, with the Melbourne Cup winner Very Elleegant third.
In fact, it was fellow trainer Gai Waterhouse who stated ‘that both 3yo colts were raised differently in Ireland and Australia, under vastly different training methods, but equal on the race track.’
Returning as a mid-term 3yo, Anamoe was third first-up in the wfa Expressway Stakes, before taking out the Hobartville Stakes and being a long neck second to Converge the Randwick Guineas.
However, it was his 6½ length victory over Converge in his very next start, the Rosehill Guineas of 2000m that sealed his tile as the Australian Champion 3YO Colt for trainer James Cummings.
At four it was Group 1 success in the Winx Stakes, George Main Stakes, Caulfield Guineas, WS Cox Plate – the WFA Championship of Australia, Chipping Norton Stakes and George Ryder Stakes.
Home-bred by Godolphin, who say Anamoe is ‘superbly bred, being from the increasing successful Street Cry sire line, being from Redoute’s Choice Gr1 mare with a deep Black-type family.’
Sire by Street Cry’s dual Group 1 winning son Street Boss, Anamoe is from Australasian Oaks winner Anamoto, by Redout’s Choice, who was also third in the VRC Oaks and American Oaks, and is the family of Grand Armee and Yourdeel.
Also retiring the Northwood Farm is the super-slick Paulele, who Darley says ‘with prover speed he’s a five-times Group winner over sprint trips, who won from on-pace and back in the field.’
‘In racing consistently in the best company for three seasons,’ Paulele took out the wfa Winterbottom Stakes of 1200m as a 4yo, having earlier won the Schallci Stakes of 1100m at Caulfield.
In winning his first two starts as pre-Christmas 2yo over 1000m and 1200m at Moonee Valley and Randwick, Paulele went onto claim the Kindgarden Stakes of 1100m at Royal Randwick.
Back as an early 3yo, it was wins in The Rosebud of 1100m, Roman Consul Stakes 1200m and Eskimo Prince Stakes 1200m, all at Randwick, before third to Nature Strip in the TJ Smith Stakes.
Again, challenging the best, he was third to Mazu in the Arrowfield 3YO Sprint, before being beaten a nose by Mazu in the Doomben 10,000, and then a head third again in the Kingsford-Smith Cup.
Trained for Godolphin by James Cummings and ridden chiefly by James McDonald, Paulele is the best of the 2000 Guineas and Dewhurst Stakes winner Dawn Approach, a grandson of Galileo.
In being the family of Merchant Navy and Jolie Bay through Legally Bay, Paulele is from the winning Flying Spur mare Chatoyant, and a full-brother to Montsegur, the dam of Coniche and Heresy.
