Wexford Stables set sights on Rosehill Guineas with Checkmate

After an impressive win at Tauranga last Saturday, Wexford Stables will head to Sydney this weekend with promising three-year-old Checkmate, who will contest the Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m) in Sydney.

Checkmate has been outstanding in his debut racing campaign, securing three wins, including the Listed Armacup 3YO Stakes (1500m). The son of Mongolian Khan represented Wexford in the NZ$3.5 million NZB Kiwi (1500m), finishing third behind Damask Rose and Evaporate.

Following that strong showing, trainers Lance O’Sullivan and Andrew Scott have set their sights on the Rosehill Guineas, with Checkmate flying to Sydney on Monday afternoon.

“He flies out this afternoon and he’ll head to Randwick, where Ashley Handley will be looking after him,” Scott said.

The team is excited but acknowledges the challenge ahead, noting that while Checkmate’s 2000m stamina is a question mark, a strong performance would open up options for the future.

Godolphin’s Broadsiding leads the market at $2.50, with Checkmate priced at $15 with online betting sites.
