Vega Magic won the Goodwood first-up last year at his first start for the Lindsay Park

The finishing touches to Vega Magic’s defence of his Goodwood title will be on display in a Werribee jump-out.

The Lindsay Park-trained sprinter runs over 1100m on Monday as he shapes up for the Group One Goodwood at Morphettville on May 19.

Co-trainer Tom Dabernig said the gelding was in great shape after cutting a leg in a paddock accident late last year which forced him to miss the autumn..

Vega Magic won the Goodwood first-up last year at his first start for the Lindsay Park team of Dabernig and David and Ben Hayes.

He hasn’t raced since finishing seventh to Redzel in the Darley Classic at Flemington during Melbourne Cup week.

“The jump-out will be his main hit-out and then he’ll go back to the farm,” Dabernig said.

“He’ll go over to Adelaide, probably on the Wednesday before the race.

“He seems in great shape. His skin quality is great, his work has been excellent.

“We’ve given him a jump-out at Seymour and Tatura.

“Tatura was a little tight for him but he got around OK.

“It’s more about giving him a trip away from home and Werribee will finish him off.”

Craig Williams won the Goodwood on Vega Magic in 2017 but Damien Oliver takes over this year.

Lindsay Park’s other top sprinter Redkirk Warrior is progressing well for his trip to England next month for the Diamond Jubilee at Royal Ascot on June 23.

Dabernig said the stable was trying to organise a gallop down the straight at Flemington’s next meeting on May 19.

“We want to work him on his own, just for a bit of atmosphere,” Dabernig said.

“After that we’ll probably give him a Flemington jump-out.

“He doesn’t need a lot. It’s more about keeping him in shape ahead of going over and getting there around two weeks before the race.”

Dabernig said Redkirk Warrior would be stabled at Newmarket with Jane Chapple-Hyam and be accompanied by Dara O’Meachair.

“He’s done a lot of our travel to Dubai and Japan,” Dabernig said.

“He’ll ride him work and then David and Ben (Hayes) will be there closer to the race.”
