Sue Olive has set her sights on scoring her first black-type win

Fresh from training her first metropolitan winner at Ascot on Saturday, Sue Olive has set her sights on scoring her first black-type win.

Olive took out Saturday’s Belmont’s Bunuru Plate (1000m) with Awesome Rock filly Kaymay and is set to aim her up at the WA Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) on April 17.

Kaymay settled in the second half of the field at her race debut and stormed home to finish over the top of Queen’s Gift to score by a short half-head.

Olive said she felt the filly would get better over the longer trips and felt the Sires would be a suitable target.

“We’ve always been of the opinion that she’s going to get over ground,” she told TABradio.

“Hopefully we can find another race, I am looking at the Sires.

“She’s bounced out of it a million dollars.

“Her times were good and she was building.

“The 1000m was too short for her and I think she will be as competitive as the next two-year-old.”

It was a significant moment for Gold Front stallion Awesome Rock, with Kaymay his first winner.

Olive said she was pleased Awesome Rock was able to get a win on the board after a couple of close calls.

“He’s been knocking on the door,” she said.

“There’s been Diamond Blue placed in a Stakes race and another little filly Awesome Rival.

“We were all laughing going ‘wouldn’t it be funny if our little two-year-old gets out there and does it’.

“We always knew she had a bit of ability but she certainly bought it to the table on Saturday.”

Meanwhile, Olive said Burgess Queen Stakes (1400m) winner Snickerdoodledandy was edging closer to having her first start with Victorian trainer Peter Moody.

“She’s heading into gallops now,” she said.

“I’m thinking it can’t be too much longer and she will be going to the races.”
