New Zealand thoroughbred owners have been urged to tighten biosecurity measures following an outbreak of the highly contagious bacterial disease strangles across Waikato and Auckland.
Authorities have confirmed cases on 12 properties, with 11 located in Waikato and one in Auckland. Officials say the Auckland case has been directly linked to the Waikato outbreak.
The infected horses, which are all young thoroughbreds, have been isolated as efforts continue to contain the disease and prevent further spread.
New Zealand Veterinary Association head of veterinary services Holly Blue said rapid identification of cases and strict biosecurity procedures remain vital.
She urged horse owners and trainers to implement measures including immediate isolation of affected horses and regular temperature monitoring of those considered at risk.
Veterinarians are continuing to monitor both confirmed and suspected properties while working closely with the racing industry to minimise disruption and allow race meetings and other equine events to continue safely.
“At this stage, the outbreak remains confined to the thoroughbred population and is largely restricted to one regional area,” Blue told Farmer’s Weekly.
Industry participants are being encouraged to remain vigilant and report any signs of illness promptly as authorities work to contain the outbreak.
