Group 1 star Warmonger is set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines after sustaining a tendon injury that will rule him out of racing for at least 12 months.
Co-owner and racing broadcaster Michael Felgate confirmed the news on RSN’s Racing Pulse on Monday, sharing that the setback will see the 2024 Queensland Derby hero miss the upcoming spring campaign.
“Warmonger will miss the spring carnival, he will be out for 12 months. I had a chat with Mick Price and he said it’s certainly at the high end of the scale as far as tendons are concerned,” Felgate said.
The five-year-old son of War Decree is expected to undergo surgery as part of his rehabilitation process, with connections now focusing on a long-term recovery plan.
Warmonger rose to prominence with a commanding 10-length win in the Queensland Derby in June 2024 and was well regarded in last year’s Cups markets, finishing eighth in the Caulfield Cup.
He had three starts during the autumn, highlighted by a runner-up finish in the Randwick City Stakes, and retires temporarily with three wins from 16 career starts and over $1.1 million in prizemoney under the care of Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr for OTI Racing.
