Star milers set for clash in All Star Mile

Racing Victoria has granted All-Star Mile wildcards to star milers, Mr Brightside and Alligator Blood, setting the stage for a thrilling showdown in the March 16 feature at Caulfield.

The announcement, made on Monday morning, follows Mr Brightside’s narrow defeat by Hong Kong champion Romantic Warrior in the Cox Plate. Co-trainer Ben Hayes expressed confidence in Mr Brightside’s versatility, highlighting the horse’s ability to perform well on any ground and at any racetrack. The ownership group is relishing the journey, with some first-time owners reveling in the experience of having a horse as exceptional as Mr Brightside.

Alligator Blood, set for his grand finale this preparation in the All Star Mile, showcased promising form in a recent trial. Trainer Bott praised the horse’s resilience and unwavering will to win. Despite a quick turnaround from the spring, Alligator Blood returned from his spell in excellent condition, retaining residual fitness and displaying enthusiasm for the upcoming campaign.

With the wildcards secured, Alligator Blood will target the All-Star Mile, potentially followed by an appearance in the Australian Cup. The stable plans to assess his performance one run at a time, considering the horse’s age and well-being.

The focus shifts to New Zealand this weekend, where Ellerslie’s Karaka Millions meeting will host two ‘win-and-you’re-in’ races. The winners of the $1.5 million TAB Karaka Millions 3YO (1600m) and the $1 million Elsdon Park Aotearoa Classic (1600m) for four-year-olds will secure guaranteed spots in The 2024 All-Star Mile. This year’s edition promises a field of 16 runners, adding anticipation to the racing calendar.
