Trainer Lindsay Smith has decided to bypass the remainder of the spring with Memsie Stakes winner Scales Of Justice.
Trained from Smith’s Warrnambool base, Scales Of Justice won the Bletchingly Stakes at Caulfield first-up, then two starts later won Melbourne’s first Group One race of the season, the Memsie Stakes at the same track.
In between the gelding ran second to Saturday’s Danehill Stakes winner Dalasan in the Spring Stakes at Morphettville.
Smith had considered the 2019 Cox Plate for Scales Of Justice before his fifth in Saturday’s Makybe Diva Stakes won by Gatting.
“He’s gone out for a spell,” Smith said.
“He knew he’d been around on Saturday. It was a bit harder than I anticipated.
“The two hard runs together may have flattened him a bit, so instead of breaking him, he can go and have a break.
“He’s done his job this time.”
Scales Of Justice’s success in the Bletchingly Stakes was his first in just over two years.
The Perth gelding campaigned in Melbourne during 2017, finishing second in the Bobbie Lewis Quality to Redkirk Warrior.
Scales Of Justice has been sparingly raced since because of a number of niggling issues which he had overcome before his Bletchingly Stakes victory.
Smith said Scales Of Justice would be aimed at the autumn Group One double at Caulfield, the C F Orr Stakes and Futurity Stakes.
