A rich restricted race in Sydney is the immediate target for last start Flemington winner Cavalry Girl.
The Tom Dabernig-trained filly is headed to Randwick on Saturday week for the $2 million Inglis Millennium over 1100m.
Dabernig said the filly remains in contention for the Blue Diamond Stakes, but with a rich prize on offer north of the border it made sense to target that race.
Cavalry Girl made her debut at Geelong on January 4 chasing home the Ciaron Maher-trained Cherish Me before dropping back from 1100m to 1000m when successful at Flemington January 18.
“She’s pulled up well and she’s eligible for the Inglis Millennium, so we are going to go to Randwick on February 8,” Dabernig said.
“She’s in the Blue Diamond as well, and the Blue Diamond is two weeks after the Inglis Millennium, so there’s a bit of water to go under to the bridge, but we just thought that this race could be worth having a go at for the good prize money that is on offer.”
A daughter of Bivouac, Cavalry Girl has already earned just shy of $110,000 in prize money which should be enough to secure her a berth in the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on February 22 should she perform well at Randwick.
Dabernig expects a number of other two-year-olds to put their hands up in coming weeks for a tilt at the Blue Diamond with the Group 3 Chairman’s Stakes (1000m) at Sandown on Saturday along with the Blue Diamond Preludes (1100m), scheduled for Caulfield, the same day as the Inglis Millennium.
Those races come on top of the Blue Diamond Previews that were held at Sandown on Saturday.
“A few of them will come out the woodwork no doubt over the next couple of races, so if we can travel up there and get a prize, it would be good,” Dabernig said.
“I think Ciaron has a good opinion of his horse that beat us at Geelong, so hopefully it’s the right form to head to Sydney with.”
