The NSW country racing community is in mourning following the tragic death of Tamworth-based trainer Stephen Meyer after an incident at Scone on Friday.
Meyer, 71, was reportedly kicked by a horse during the opening day of the two-day feature meeting and later passed away.
It remains unclear whether the horse involved was his own, with investigations ongoing into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
His stable runner, Danza In The Dark, competed in the final race on the card shortly after the incident occurred.
Racing NSW confirmed Meyer’s passing on Saturday, with chief executive Peter V’landys paying tribute to the respected horseman.
“A dedicated and highly regarded horseman from the Hunter North West district, Stephen was known for his integrity, work ethic and deep lifelong love for thoroughbreds,” V’landys said.
“Operating out of Tamworth, he achieved notable success with his stable star, Danza In The Dark, winner of the 2024 Walcha and Quirindi Cups.”
Meyer trained as a hobby for many years, recording six wins and 22 placings from 60 starters, all with his beloved Danza In The Dark.
He was widely admired throughout the industry for his humility and passion for racing.
“His humble approach and sportsmanship earned him wide respect across the industry. Every story he told always included mention of a horse,” V’landys said.
“Racing NSW extends its deepest condolences to Stephen’s family and many friends.”
