Pre-race favourite Icarian Dream will face a significant challenge in her quest to secure trainer Ciaron Maher his third Magic Millions 2YO Classic title, after drawing the widest barrier for Saturday’s race at the Gold Coast.
The talented filly will jump from barrier 16 after the emergencies are removed, following her initial draw of barrier 21.
Maher, who trains in partnership with David Eustace, has already claimed Magic Millions success twice, with Away Game in 2020 and Coolangatta in 2022. Now, Icarian Dream, a daughter of Blue Point, will aim to add a third title to Maher’s record after her impressive victory in the B.J. McLachlan Stakes at Eagle Farm on December 21.
While Icarian Dream’s connections faced disappointment at the barrier draw, the outcome was far more favourable for other leading contenders. Pre-draw second favourite Invincible Woman drew barrier nine, while third elect Gallo Nero landed barrier five for Team Hawkes.
The market shifted following the draw, with Invincible Woman taking over as the new favourite at $5 with online betting sites, followed by Gallo Nero at $6 and Icarian Dream easing to $7. First emergency Space Rider also remains at $7, should he gain a start in the field.
