Bossy Nic has landed a Black Type win at her second start taking out the Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes

While the Tony and Calvin McEvoy will head to Sydney with exciting two-year-old Veight, another of their smart youngsters will have to take a lesser route after a win at Flemington.

Having her second start, Bossy Nic took out the Group 3 Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes (1200m) on Saturday to follow a debut second in a Listed race in Adelaide earlier in the month.

As Bossy Nic had not been named prior to nominations being taken for the major Sydney race, the filly could not be entered.

Instead, the McEvoy stable will look towards the Adelaide Carnival in May to enhance Bossy Nic’s value.

Ridden by Dean Holland, Bossy Nic ($8.50 betr) scored a 2-½ length win from Lovazou ($21) with Treasurway ($16) a short-head away third.

Calvin McEvoy said Bossy Nic had shown herself to be a professional type, a beautiful muscle-bound filly and one that was a cut above average.

However, problems syndicating Bossy Nic had put the naming of the filly on hold, which in turn delayed the start of her racing career.

“To be honest, she was quite tough for us to syndicate,” McEvoy said.

“We held onto her for a little bit longer than what we always like to and that whole process put her back a touch.

“But she’s matured all the way through, and I think she’s only going to get better like the Nicconis do.

“Dean (Holland) is under the impression that she’ll love a little bit further, and I think at the moment 1200 (metres) is perfect and she showed that today.

“It’s very exciting for the connections and on a big day like today to get a winner is fantastic.”

Holland said Bossy Nic had a good head on her shoulders and behave more like an eight-year-old gelding than a two-year-old filly having her second start.

“Her turn of foot was explosive and down the track she’s going to be a very nice horse,” Holland said.

“She’s got the Black Type today and she’s going to have a very nice career.”
