The Racing Industry is in mourning following the passing of Melbourne Cup-winning jockey John Duggan.
Renowned as one of the era’s shining stars, Duggan achieved a remarkable feat by claiming the 1977 Melbourne Cup aboard Gold And Black, trained by the legendary Bart Cummings.
Duggan’s exceptional talent led him to become Cummings’ stable rider for a period, and he also triumphed in the 1976 Golden Slipper on Vivarchi, another horse trained by Cummings.
Duggan’s journey in racing began under the guidance of Theo Green, whose influence also impacted the careers of esteemed jockeys like Darren Beadman and Malcolm Johnston.
The young rider’s promise was evident when he secured the Sydney apprentice title in 1969-70 and 1971-72.
Throughout his illustrious career, Duggan demonstrated his skills by clinching numerous Sydney Group 1 victories.
He extended his success by riding for renowned trainers such as Tommy Smith, Guy Walter, and Brian Mayfield-Smith.
The passing of John Duggan leaves a void in the racing community, as he was not only a Melbourne Cup champion but also a cherished figure in the sport.
