Protectionist, the esteemed winner of the 2014 Melbourne Cup, has died at age 13, Australian Bloodstock announced.
Remembered for his dominant performance in the Melbourne Cup, where he triumphed by four lengths under the guidance of trainer Andreas Wohler and jockey Ryan Moore, Protectionist outpaced notable competitors Red Cadeaux and Who Shot Thebarman.
Post-racing, Protectionist embarked on stud duties in Germany. His legacy continued at Gestut Rottgen Stud, where he sired five stakes winners from his initial crops, standing for a fee of €6,500 (AUD $10,900).
Australian Bloodstock paid homage to Protectionist’s remarkable character and his significant influence on many.
Daniel O’Sullivan, a racing ratings expert, highlighted the Melbourne Cup win as one of the best performances of the past 15 years.
Protectionist, after a stint in Australia with Kris Lees, returned to Germany, achieving three additional race victories under Wohler’s care.
