Mark Newnham has announced that he will leave Australia to begin a new career in Hong Kong. He revealed his decision during a press conference held in Hong Kong, where he plans to start training in June, ahead of the 2023-24 racing season.
Newnham has been a leading trainer in Sydney for over six years, training 390 winners and collecting four Group 1 victories. He will continue to train in Sydney until May before moving to Hong Kong with his wife.
Newnhamโs clients have been supportive of his decision, and he has been allocated 60 boxes in Hong Kong, with the Jockey Club covering most of his overheads. The move is seen as a lucrative package for the trainer, who prefers a hands-on approach and doesnโt want to train over 100 horses.
Before he departs, Newnham will seek to add to his impressive career record, with Expat running in the Group 1 Coolmore Classic at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday. Alongside Expat, he will also be sending out King Frankel and Sunshine Rising in the Group 2 Sky High Stakes.
