The rivalry between Mr Brightside and Pride Of Jenni has dominated discussions ahead of Saturday’s $3 million Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m).
However, Kiwi trainer Ken Kelso believes his star mare Legarto brings another crucial element to the race.
Legarto, arriving in Melbourne on Wednesday, is the sole nominee boasting current 2000-meter form, following her G1 Herbie Dyke Stakes victory and a subsequent second-place finish at Ellerslie.
Kelso rates last year’s Australian Guineas winner as capable of outperforming her rivals.
He highlighted her preference for big, roomy tracks like Flemington and expressed satisfaction with her preparations.
With jockey Michael Dee aboard, tactics are yet to be finalised, but Kelso anticipates a strong showing with the race likely to suit Legarto’s style.
All signs point to an exciting Australian Cup with Legarto poised to make her mark.
