Lanciato will be given his chance in Listed company in the Carrington Stakes

Lanciato has been a constant in Mark Newnham’s short training career and the five-year-old will be given his chance in Listed company in the Carrington Stakes.

The gelding was Newnham’s first runner when he took out his licence 18 months ago after many years at Tulloch Lodge as Gai Waterhouse’s senior foreman.

Newnham has now added a stable at Randwick while retaining his original boxes at Warwick Farm where Lanciato is trained.

The former New Zealander was Newnham’s first runner in June 2016, and although he ran second he helped put the trainer on the map.

Since his first Sydney campaign, Lanciato has won four races and has earned his chance in Saturday’s Carrington Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill with Rachel King to ride at 53kg.

The pair combined to win over 1400 metres at Randwick on January 6.

“He’s going terrific and he gets in well with 53 kilos,” Newnham said.

“Rachel rode him well last time and she can ride the weight. There are not many who can.

“I think he will go well. I would be disappointed if he didn’t finish in the first three.

“If he does we will look at the Newcastle Newmarket. It’s a way off yet but he likes his runs spaced.

“That is the sort of race that will suit him.”

Magnajoy, trained at the Gold Coast by Michael Costa, was an additonal entry on Tuesday for the Carrington Stakes bringing the nominations to 11.

The weights are headed by 2016 Victoria Derby winner Prized Icon who is now with Kris Lees after winning the Classic for James Cummings who is now head trainer for Godolphin.

Prized Icon, who is raced by Gooree Stud, has 60kg with former Hong Kong horse Beauty Flame, European import Endless Drama and Kuro on 58.5kg.

The Newnham-trained two-year-old Gentle Persuasion, also owned by Gooree, will have to wait for another day to make her debut.

“She has a bit of a virus so she won’t run this week,” Newnham said.

The Nick Olive-trained Sizzling Belle, a winner at Wagga earlier this month, is the only winner among the 17 youngsters left in the entries for the 2YO Plate.
