Betting on the 2010 Melbourne Cup may be thrown into turmoil this afternoon with news that two of the international raiders, Profound Beauty and Bauer, may miss the $6 million race next Tuesday.
Fairfax newspapers are reporting that the Dermot Weld-trained mare Profound Beauty may be unsound, while 2008 Melbourne Cup runner up Bauer may be lame.
According to the reports, VRC stewards and vets arrived for a routine check at Werribee at 2pm yesterday.
Connections of both runners told British racing newspaper The Racing Post that their respective horses were fine.
In relation to Profound Beauty, trainer Dermot Weld said: “The filly had a long journey and she was a little stiff when she arrived but…she has been loosening out well.â€
Bauer’s trainer Luca Cumani has wife Sara and daughter Francesca also representing him in Australia.
Sara Cumani was adamant the horse was fine.
“I hear Racing Victoria officials appear to think that they know these horses better than their trainers do,” she said.
“Luca is happy with the horse, he worked extremely well.â€
It is understood Racing Victoria’s chief steward Terry Bailey wants to resolve the matter today before final acceptances for the Cup are taken tomorrow night.
