Co-trainer Chris Meagher has no qualms about the three weeks between runs for the in-form Trevelyan in the $250,000 The Wave at the Gold Coast.
The Wave on Saturday is a new race for three and four-year-olds run at weight-for-age and also carries a wild card into the Magic Millions Trophy a week later.
As a further incentive it carries a total of $235,000 in Magic Millions and QTIS bonus payments.
The Gold Coast Turf Club has been rewarded with a strong field for the race which is run at the Hollindale Stakes distance of 1800m.
Trevelyan has earned his chance at the race with two strong wins at his past two starts including a Class Six Plate at Eagle Farm on December 14.
The win followed a victory at Doomben on November 9.
Meagher said it was not unusual for Trevelyan to have his runs well spaced.
“He seems to race best that way and we can keep him ticking over in the lead-up to his races,” Meagher said.
“I know his best form to date has been at 1600 metres but we have been keen to get him back out to 1800.”
Trevelyan has won five races from 12 starts on five different tracks but is yet to race at the Gold Coast.
“The Gold Coast should present no problems for him, and he is a real trier, ” Meagher said.
Trevelyan is by former top sprinter and now leading sire sire Pierro who is getting plenty of winners over middle distances.
His dam is by Dansili who is a noted sire of stayers giving Trevelyan plenty of stamina on both sides.
Trevelyan is raced by Paul Fudge’s Waratah syndicate which has been a great supporter for Meagher.
The trainer is in partnership with his Melbourne Cup-winning father John Meagher who mainly looks after their operation at Mornington in Victoria.
They are having another good season with horses such as Trevelyan and stakes winner Pippie who is expected to return in the autumn.
Ron Stewart who has ridden Trevelyan to his past two wins retains the ride.
“Ron has the key to him and he is a jockey with a lot of experience in big races,” Meagher said.
