With stable star Veight ruled out of the spring due to a neck injury, trainers Tony and Calvin McEvoy are pinning their Group 1 hopes on rising talent Half Yours.
Following his dominant win in the Listed Caloundra Cup, the stayer is now being aimed at the Group 1 Metropolitan at Randwick in October.
“We’ll take the pressure off him and let him stay up here in Queensland then we’ll plan a campaign maybe towards the Metropolitan Handicap,” Tony McEvoy told racing.com.
The stable brought Half Yours north to boost his rating, a move that’s paid off handsomely.
“He’s a young horse who’s only had 10 starts, but performances like Saturday’s get you thinking about those big races,” McEvoy added.
Bought for $305,000, Half Yours has flourished with five top-two finishes this prep.
As for Veight, McEvoy said the gelding is still recovering: “He’s probably going to need several months off… we’re just going to do the right things to get him back and winning races.”
